    A moment I think might have been lost in the Dolly cameo, Dolly never tells Heveena that she was wrong or bad or evil. She just tells her a story about her youth and what she belives in and lets Heveena find her way. there was nothing but love in that simulated cabin.

    Have to give Bortis's actor a lot of credit in this episode. He managed to pull off a wide range of emotions from his classic stoic bluntness, to the blind rage of seeing seeing his child's torture, to desperately holding back tears as he addressed the counsel, all were believable.

    • @dm121984

      Yes, Bortis' actor was amazing in this episode too, with a character and species who are very reserved, he managed to convey everything amazingly whilst still keeping it within Bortis' character; the scene with the council was amazing, as was the scene when they rescued Topa, and I don't think we've ever seen Bortis' explode like that before - I genuinely thought that Bortis would kill him (and arguably justifiably so).

    This episode brought me to tears repeatedly. Can I say that the moment Bortis closed his eyes and took a breath was a statement on 2 levels for me.
    Level 1: That was a breath of a man who finally felt inner peace after years of tension over his family life. All cast members brought their A- game tonight.
    Level 2: That breath represents how going to Hulu has allowed for every episode to breath. By that I mean if an episode needs to be 42 minutes to tell a story, so be it. If it needs 60-90 minutes to make sure it all feels organic, all for it.

    The Orville may have not started great with the Moclus storyline BUT DAMN DID IT STICK THE LANDING. I loved how it basically went with "YOU CAN'T COMPROMISE WITH BIGOTRY OR ELSE YOU STILL HURT THOSE MARGINALIZED. BECAUSE BIGOTS WANT PEOPLE DEAD AND GONE AT THE END OF THE DAY"
    I was literally screaming at my TV going YES YES FUCK MOCLUS!

    • @trueblaze84

      While I agree you can't compromise with bigotry, I think there is also an important less that you still have to try. Sure in the end there will always be those you can never convince but in the process you get people like Bortis and even Kliden who start out just as bigoted as everyone else but eventually come to realize the harm their beliefs are causing. Not only that but the reason everyone stood together against the Moclins in the end was because they saw how the Union had tried to bend over backwards to appease the Moclins yet the still continued to play victim every step of the way.

Unlike Kylden he wasn't filled with disgust for Topa.
      Bortus also when he was much younger before joining the Orville and leaving Morclus, was in a relationship with Locar but didn't turn him in when he found him cheating on him with a female.

    • @trueblaze84
      @trueblaze84 2 роки тому +1

      @@MuantanamoMobile But if the crew hadn't convinced him there was nothing wrong with Topa being female he would have still considered it a disgusting deformity. Just because he changed his mind faster than Klyden doesn't mean he didn't agree with him at some point.
      And the reason Bortus didn't turn in Locar was because he loved Locar and didn't want him to suffer the public humiliation. He kept his belief that Locar was a disgusting perverted degenerate right up to the moment where he was outed and arrested and only then did he finally begin to change his mind.
      Bortus started with the mindset of your typical bigget, but only because he never questioned the beliefs he had been taught and when he did he found no reason to hold them and abandoned them. Klyden on the other hand clung to his ideals and only finally became willing to abandon them when someone he loved was nearly killed by them. They both started as biggets, but one just stopped being one much faster than the other.

Perhaps the union representatives would have stood up either way, but I'm not convinced. There is something deeply phytologically difficult about being the first one to stand up and speak out. And the union representatives saw that courage and I think that's at least part of the reason they acted. And while they might have done that without him speaking out, I certainly could never say that for certain.

    Something interesting about this episode, we the audience don't know the name of the Molcan contact nor the frequency Topah was supposed to use to contact them. So we don't know whether or not the torture was actually successful in extracting the correct information. The torturer seems to have just been told something by Topah but there is no confirmation that the info was accurate.

    • @Jeffrey_Lew
      @Jeffrey_Lew 2 роки тому

      I would presume that the setting on the torture stick that Bortus used to attack the torturer was high enough to cause permanent neurological damage, so he wouldn't be able to remember that information. And, we hope any recordings of the session were also destroyed.

      @Lycandros 2 роки тому

      @@Jeffrey_Lew I suppose I was being a bit vague. Torture does not actually give useful intell. People will say and do almost anything to stop pain and suffering, lies based on what they believe the torturer wants to hear is most often given. They didn't know that she had any useful intell when they took her or she wouldn't have been taken because they would have already had it. So this episode didn't actually do what so many other shows do and show torture actually working. He got information, but there was no confirmation that the info was good.

    I was so connected to this episode. I knew a man a lot like Klyden. He had to hide who he was when he was young and as an adult. When I met him gay culture was just starting to be accepted and he was so angry and full of self hate he’d turn that hate on to other gay men. He changed a lot once he recognized how angry he was.
    I feel like the union is probably better off without having to walk on eggshells around the Moclans.
    There might be segments of other races that could help. There was a species in episode two that demolished the krill maybe the union can reach out to the other unaffiliated races.

Amazing story’s with great character development, smartly written and acted and the special effects were fantastic. Shame that not a single episode of STD or Picard has been able to pull off anything even close to the quality of Orville’s current season. It’s difficult, but I think my favorite episode is still Tale of Two Topas just because of how much of an emotional catharsis I got from that, though this episode is a great and integral companion to it. For this episode it was like the long prophesied second shoe had finally dropped.

    I think it's kinda good that they portrayed Heveena as flawed and not as this "paragon of virtue" type of person the show seemed to be setting her up as. Ironically, they "humanized" her.
    Like Ed pointed out, she must have known about the imbalance of power between a child and the person who is their hero, so of course Topa would have agreed to anything Heveena asked. Naturally Heveena would be wary of anyone officially in the chain of command in the Union, so she couldn't realistically ask any enlisted officers to take on this task, just because she'd consider the risk too great with everything that was at stake.
    In a way, it makes me think of Kai Opaka from Deep Space 9 after the reveal that she had to sacrifice her son and his resistance cell to the Cardassians in order to save many more lives.

    I just want to say, as someone who utterly HATED the pilot episode of this show, how continually impressed I've been with it. It felt like, early on, the writers didn't know what they wanted The Orville to be: was it a serious sci fi with comedic moments? Or was it a comedy with serious sci fi moments? As time has gone on though, the show really seems to have found itself; its a workplace dramedy with some incredible character work. It draws its humour from the everyday inane shenanigans that happen in every workplace culture, while at the same time telling some truly awesome and heartfelt sci fi stories around it. Topa's story in particular has continually tugged at my heart strings, even if some of the earlier episodes were a bit...up and down...and I love how they've culminated it this season. Truly *chef's kiss* all around! The Orville truly feels like its approaching Babylon 5 levels of quality in some ways (writing, intrigue, character moments, cool sci fi stuff) and I'm VERY here for it! So happy that we're in another golden age of TV sci fi. :)

I think sci-fi shows like this need at least 18 episodes a season so they can set things up and give them time so they have a bigger impact when they pay them off. At the end of the one with Topa figuring out she's female, Bortus's husband tells her she disgusts him and he leaves and he comes back at the end of this episode and it would be so much better if was gone for a while so you forgot about him so it would really decimate your emotions when he comes back and says he needs to learn to accept her because he can't not have her in his life.

    I've never had a scifi show got me to the verge of tears. I hope that after Disney plus brings the show to its streaming service that they let seth do it how its been going already, this is a show worth letting the passion of the creators to control completely.

    Even though we live in a society where we view violence as unacceptable on most levels, and I have done everything I can to uphold that, im not sure id have left anyone alive on that moclan base. I know what it means to say that, but i also know what it means to hurt a child. I could never abide that even a little by leaving breathing moclans on that base.

    Ed surely dropped some truth bombs on Heveena. He was furious af and didn't take any of her "logic" for what she did. I'm happy that, even with a positive outcome for her, Heveena didn't get personal forgiveness from Bortus and probably the rest of people.

      She's very dedicated to the cause.
      I don't think Kira would have recruited a small child as an agent even at her most ruthless.
