wow thats brill for you clydetcat!! happy birthday and lunar eclipse!
Can't wait! I made an outdoor adventure with my meetup group for this one!
@Saparonia As i remember from high school, it has much to do with perspective. The moon looks large when you have a tree or building in the background. Our brains see that as a comparison an the moon looks larger than normal. When you take a picture, you are only capturing it with the same points of perspective as if you were looking at it. Then once it is farther away from comparable objects, we judge it to much smaller because we have no frame of reference. This is how i remember it
@LsBaba check the description for an interactive visibility map! happy sky watching.
@Saparonia The illusion has to do with what reference points are also visible - such as trees, buildings, etc. Since they're visible in photos, the illusion persists.
I'm watching this from my deck in San Francisco for sure! Thank you for the video :)
We watched it here in Salt Lake City. The moon seemed mildly red to us, but we have a terrible inversion which may dull the color of it to me.
Live in Japan. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. Live in a tower where the moon is in front of my window. GOSH IS WAS AMAZING
@Saparonia A camera is not affected by this illusion, as shown in the video. Photographs show that the moon is actually the same size, but for unknown reasons the moon appears larger to us when it's on the horizon. Make sense?
really good information on what to expect i am definitely going to get up for this one please dont let there be fog
@MEGAF4IL it's 4:45 am-6:00 am not pm. so you still have the chance to see it if you live on the western part of Canada :)
Can any one please tell at what time I should be watching for the eclipse from Japan? Thanks!
It's amazing how a Space-agency can be so focused on one country, and one country alone. Saddens me.
I Saw it too! I was in southern california. Been up since 4 to watch the whole thing. It was red just as the sunrise came.
I sacrificed a breakfast burrito to the moon to bring it out of the dark and guess what, it worked!!!
Peter: Why are we not funding this!?
very cool! Thanks Science at NASA!
These things are amazing
If you are in Pacific Standard Time, then it would be visible from your area. It starts at 4:30, but ends around 7. I recommend waking up at 6 to see the climax (when the moon is fully red with turquoise)
Haha cant wait :D
nice video!
This is an invitation to see an artist theory on the physics of Time!
@ninomojo If its visible at 400am on the west coast. Japan is west by about 20' degrees latitude. I think you should look for it at 10pm to 0100am. best guess. Good luck.
@DaKayH Thanks!
@huyly123 BTW It was no Cloudy at Hornsby Sydney. If you lived at Hornsby you can see it Clearly
@Arnoldaka1993 I understand that cameras prove it blah blah, but I never understood why I can see more detail when it has relative objects near it though. I really feel like that's true.
I can see it now..
So beautiful view in Indonesia
As I was driving tonight just before dusk, I noticed that the moon was very full. Then I remembered that the only time I saw a total lunar eclipse (circa 1975), it was a full moon then. So then I wondered if total lunar eclipses occur only during full moons. Then I became confused: what is the difference between a new moon (a monthly occurrence) and a total lunar eclipse?
well, when i was kid, ive seen this HUGE moon at dawn...back then, i thought i was hallucinating, hahaha...it was very beautiful, maybe the most beautiful moon ive ever see...but glad i was there...hope there will be a live streaming about this one, really want to see that red moon...
I see it 8-) Its amazing.. its still here...
This is awesome
Thank you for the explanation! Way cool. I hope to have my eyes open and my butt outside when it is time...
ITS APPEARING!
From Malaysia (:
@LsBaba 10p.m. Hong Kong/Bejing time zone. Not sure other place
What will this look like for folks on east coast of U.S.A.?
I'm on the California coast. I though I heard this video say to "face west," but I heard elsewhere it'll be visible facing East. Which is it?
I'll barely be able to see anything, I live in southeastern US. Oh well. I've seen a red moon before, it's quite beautiful.
Any Chance to know if this is going to appear in the middle east ? Dubai Specifically ? and if so , at what time?
yeah, its my first time to see a lunar eclipse! very cooll
beautiful view here in California
I live in Malaysia and missed it.
If I understand correct, at moonrise this will be visible in Sweden, somewhat?

jesus is coming back, cant what for this!!!!
HUGE FALSE PREMISE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE VIDEO...it WOULD be tought to wake up that early, but considering ITS THE WEEKEND you should be up that late(330 am in Cali) or you'll probably benefit from some re-prioritizing in your life, chances are youre on the brink on loserdom.......
