@Saparonia As i remember from high school, it has much to do with perspective. The moon looks large when you have a tree or building in the background. Our brains see that as a comparison an the moon looks larger than normal. When you take a picture, you are only capturing it with the same points of perspective as if you were looking at it. Then once it is farther away from comparable objects, we judge it to much smaller because we have no frame of reference. This is how i remember it

@Saparonia The illusion has to do with what reference points are also visible - such as trees, buildings, etc. Since they're visible in photos, the illusion persists.

We watched it here in Salt Lake City. The moon seemed mildly red to us, but we have a terrible inversion which may dull the color of it to me.

Live in Japan. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. Live in a tower where the moon is in front of my window. GOSH IS WAS AMAZING

@Saparonia A camera is not affected by this illusion, as shown in the video. Photographs show that the moon is actually the same size, but for unknown reasons the moon appears larger to us when it's on the horizon. Make sense?

It's amazing how a Space-agency can be so focused on one country, and one country alone. Saddens me.

If you are in Pacific Standard Time, then it would be visible from your area. It starts at 4:30, but ends around 7. I recommend waking up at 6 to see the climax (when the moon is fully red with turquoise)
    Haha cant wait :D

@ninomojo If its visible at 400am on the west coast. Japan is west by about 20' degrees latitude. I think you should look for it at 10pm to 0100am. best guess. Good luck.

@Arnoldaka1993 I understand that cameras prove it blah blah, but I never understood why I can see more detail when it has relative objects near it though. I really feel like that's true.

As I was driving tonight just before dusk, I noticed that the moon was very full. Then I remembered that the only time I saw a total lunar eclipse (circa 1975), it was a full moon then. So then I wondered if total lunar eclipses occur only during full moons. Then I became confused: what is the difference between a new moon (a monthly occurrence) and a total lunar eclipse?
