Thanks for the heads up on this. I found a copy and just finished it. What a fun read. Over the first few chapters, the Bernhard imitation bordered on parody, but I found it ultimately developed into a distinct, enjoyable style. The transparent influence of (perhaps even tribute to) Bernhard reminds me of the better Lovecraft disciples, eg TED Klein, who manage to imitate and incorporate many of Lovectaft's telltale stylistics quirks and motifs, while still carrying it forward in new directions.

Great call on Klein! It’s always fun to see how writers wear (and weather) their influences.

Thank you for the recommendation and review. I immediately obtained and read the novel and enjoyed it very much, in part because of it's European flavor. It also stimulated my interest in early Netherlandish art. Now on to Reinhardt's Garden.

I hope you enjoy Reinhardt’s Garden. I’m planning to read it very soon. Any particular Renaissance artists from the Netherlands that you enjoy?
      Cheers, Jack

@@ramblingraconteur1616 I'm afraid there are many - Bruegel, Memling, Bosch, Christus, and Van Eyck come to mind. Fortunately I've visited Bruges and Ghent. I've finished Reinhardt's Garden and I did enjoy it.

Love the recent video frequency. Can you do Life and Fate by Vasily Grossman next?

Thanks for the kind words. Grossman would be an intensive project. I’m hoping to finish Stalingrad this year and then go on to Life and Fate next year or the year after. Are you a fan of Grossman’s works?
      Cheers, Jack
