My Italian grandma always laid handkerchiefs etc on the lawn .not just the sunshine but the chlorophyll seemed to eliminate any stains. We had Pasta every Sunday and her white damask napkins never had a stain. This was enjoyable. I adore linens and cillect pillowcasws.
This made me cry! ❤️ So sweet hearing of your love for your great grandmother and her love for you and your family. What a treasure of memories and beauty she left to all of you.
I am the keeper of my family's linen legacy. I have several quilts and beautifully embroidered items to care for. THANK YOU so much for this video! I'll not put them in the washing machine again! 🥴🤦♀️
I loved this video. I've received vintage linens from others that don't wish to care for them. I love repurposing the items that are so worn that they can't be used as they were originally intended. My kitchen cafe´ curtains were made from an old tablecloth. I adore vintage quilts and rotate them in my guest bedrooms.
This is great! Now I won't hesitate to grab old linen pieces when I see them. I've always been intimidated by having to clean/care for them. Not anymore!! Thank you Angela!💋
Thank you. This is the first time I've ever seen anything on cleaning these wonderful pieces. My grandma crocheted our curtains, table coverings, doilies for chair arms, and a little dress for me when I was about 2 years old. Unfortunately no one asked me ,,aged 12 or 13 if I would ever want any of it and it has all been gone these many years .( I'm 77)....
Coincidentally Bauer also means farmer in German. So your German born grandmother who lived as a farmer also wore the last name farmer. Wonderful heartwarming video sharing Oma Bauer's beautiful work 💗
Lovely video. I love vintage linen sheets and cotton duvet covers I buy them unused on etsy. I also prefer linen hand towels to terry cloth. I also have some table cloths and napkins elaborately monogrammed (and my initials are the same as my grandmother). So lovely, and much better quality than what you can buy today, unless it is very high end.
I just received my American Blossom linens in natural 2 days ago. I have to say I have been falling asleep right away and I haven’t been sweating during the night. I was scared of the price honestly, but I think any investments that is going to benefit my overall well-being is totally worth it . Thank you ☺️
Hi there from a quilter, who has many old quilts. Depending on the size, age and condition of a quilt, I will put in the washer along with mild detergent on cold. I have also put them in the dryer along with color catcher. Again depending on condition of quilts. One other suggestion with quilts. You need to refill them frequently or they will stress the fabric. From an old lady quilter!!
Related to the flax plant used to make linen, beautiful blue flowered perennial flax makes one excellent little planting. Finding it in the garden center is a problem, though. I've got a spot where it ought to do well - & given all this talk about linen & flax, I may have to break down & look for it online. By the way, adding ground flax seeds to your diet is an excellent health measure.
You have a lovely collection Angela. And I just want to say how much I appreciate that you respond to my comments. Many don't, and I don't even know if they read them.
Thank you for many great tips. I too am a vintage linen lover. My dear grandmother was always stitching and unfortunately, she took the age old art of tatting with her to heaven before I was able to master it. I do have her needles; maybe this winter I will try again. Thank you for sharing your gracious home. 💕🙏. P.S. Love forgotten way farms
My friends think I'm crazy when I see vintage linens, and grab them. Head to checkout and keep moving. My beds were made with white monogrammed sheets or pillowcases. I wish I could afford monogrammed for my linen. Love this video
Another great tip is if storing on wooden shelves first cover the shelf with heavy-duty tin foil before laying down the muslin. The foil will create a better barrier between the acids leaching from the wood and the linens, while the muslin can act like a "canary in the coal mine" alerting you to any acid coming through (such as around edges or if the foil tears) before it stains your linens. :-)
I really enjoyed this. I have to admit that spending that much time on laundry would do me in. I spend enough time as it is lol. Bug larva...idk. What this beautifully made video did do for me is inspire to me to try my hand at quilting again. I love the idea of handing down pieces to my children and one day my grandchildren and great grand children God willing. I think sewing and hand embroidery would be a nice addition to our homeschool year. I needed a craft/art class idea. These are such charming and useful skills to have.
My granny made crazy quilts by hand. The family all has quilts from her and several quilt tops that I want to finish. She too lost her eyesore and could no longer make them. That was so sad.
Oh my goodness, Angela, what an informative video packaged up so beautifully! It was a delight to watch, and the glimpses of your exquisite bed and bedroom made my mouth drool with anticipation of my coming bedroom makeover. 🥰
I really enjoyed this video, I love to learn about the care of vintage anything and linens are something that can really set your home and style apart from the rest. People are always shocked when they see we use cloth napkins with a busy family and that I have so many different sets.
This was very helpful and informative. I have embroidered pillowcases and linens from my grandmother who brought them from Greece, hand stitched with love. I will get some of the Restoration detergent you recommended. By the way my mother always hung her linens on the line so they billow and naturally bleach in the sunshine! Also, your laying the white garments on the grass to dry under the sun is what Katherine Hepburn used to do at her family estate in Connecticut!
Fantastic Information Angela!! Proper care for all textiles/fabrics/clothing has been a hobby of mine since childhood... Learning how to make things last... Vintage... Inexpensive. Everything in between... A layer of self respect in my opinion❣️🕊️🤗
I have got a lot of linen's and lace doilies . The really old ones from my mother in laws are really brown. Of course they are stiff from starch. they would dip them into starch and water lay them out and pin them till them were dry. I don't think they washed them ever again. I have no idea who made them. They could be really old. My grandmother made quilts and doilies , every pillow case had an crouched end , maybe even pretty flowers sewn on top. I have gone in and they have turned yellow. I will look for those products. Thank you! ( you really look nice) Joyce
Glad I was going through your videos & found this one. I love collecting antique/vintage linens & have several pieces that need cleaning. Not heard of Restoration cleaning products before, where did u find it? Thank you!
Thank you for this....I have a lot of precious pieces that could use some attention and I did not know about the wood bleeding thru the fabric. Going to change that immediately!
I found a king size quilt a couple years ago at a thrift store for 23 dollars. It is hand stitched and I think it's from the 80's, maybe 90's from the color choices used. Dark greens, burgundies and white And not a stain to be found. Like it was never used at all.
Just buy what you Love when you see it, vintage or not... ! Usually pretty good prices for tablecloths and runners... Purchase what pulls at your heartstrings... and USE them! Like I do....
WOW!!! Those Quilts from your Great Grandmother is so precious!!! 💖💖💖💖. I was unaware that you needed to put tissue paper between the Vintage Linens. Thanks for the tips! I was curious if you could do a video on how you choose your Vintage Art work? You've inspired me to start hunting for these Gems. 😊 Xoxo Trudy 💖
Your linens and bedlinen are stunning. I love linens, lace and doilies from times gone by . This is going in my saved list , I'm not sure we have these products in Australia but the advice is gold. Thank you beautiful xxoo p.s Big fans of @forgotten way farms here 😍😍
I am quilter and I have repaired a few vintage quilts over the years. When washing your vintage quilts please make sure there are no tears or holes. The weight of the water and cleaning process makes the weak spots worse. If you want your vintage quilts repaired find your local quilt guild and see if anyone would help. They may also have some tips if you feel comfortable tackling repairs yourself. I would also recommend a product for cleaning called Retro Clean. It's made specifically for yellowed and stained vintage pieces. Hope this helps ❤️
I have been thrifting linens (runners, and tablecloths..) maybe some not vintage, but certainly NOT plastic ones from the Dollar Tree! I use what I have collected, and not too worried about stains... they are meant to be used....and I pay no more than $5! Seriously! Especially for Fall,... I am getting into that Nesting Vibe, with cozy, beautiful, traditional decor... for a warm and lovely home...
Great information! Thanks for sharing. I have gorgeous antique linens from Italy that my great grandmother brought to the US when she moved here. They are mostly coverlets and pillowcases. I was thinking of turning them into duvets. Any suggestions? 🙏
Thank you for the great tips. Do these washing tips apply to doylies? My grandmother Rose spent most of her life crocheting dining room table clothes, doylies etc. They are still going strong but some are yellowed or have a few stains.
Try Retro Clean. It's a hand washing detergent for vintage quilts and linens. I'm a quilter and I use this when I repair vintage quilts. Be as gentle as possible with your pieces
You are amazing, I learn so much from you! I thought of you as I was listening to a youtuber who does historic clothing, talk all about linen (the fabric & often used as bedding) ua-cam.com/video/SUTA7L_LNFw/v-deo.html and thought you might enjoy her history and information. She reminds me so much of you and I wondered if you might have her make you a lovely linen dress.

Which color sheets do you have ? It’s hard to tell . Is the white or the natural ?

I have been blessed with vintage table covers from my Grandma. I take joy in using them
Beautiful bouquet of Potomac AppleBlossom Snapdragons. One of my favorites

BIZ is safe to soak any vintage linens, even for days, usually gets the whites really clean.

So interesting. Thank you. I need to follow these tips.
Good video thanks 👍
This was very informative. They certainly don't make things like they used to. Shalom to you and your family. 🌷
Thank you so much for this video. I too love vintage linens, yet fear I will damage them by washing improperly.

So when you say 'linens' are you talking about cotton or actual linen made from flax?
