Rest in paradise legend. Not only did you shape the way we played the game from the sticks we held, but molded our appreciation for the game. Thank you Alfie.
❤️🔥 I grew up playing with plastic and metal sticks, first box then field, however my father came to have two traditional sticks, from noticeably different times I think. The older(?) having a much larger, longer and wider, pocket, the newer smaller more compact. Unfortunately both have damaged gut. I would love to learn to restore that aspect, as I have no knowledge of it, but have managed to learn to understand and shape a satisfying pocket a plastic head with mesh, or at least in a Brine Edge, but that’s nothing the same as what traditional stick makers to do. An amazing gift. Really, the first time while playing pass I managed to listen to and feel at home with a traditional stick in my hands I felt a something different than anything with metal and plastic, as fun as they are. It felt like the very edge of connecting back through time to all the collective ancestors who’ve played it under the same sun over the same fields and breathing the same air as we do today.
Your sticks are works of art to those of us who understand. I was a white boy that learned the game of box lacrosse with the Ojibweh boys from the local reserve - nothing quite like a wooden stick across the ribs to get your attention! We played with just the quilt type padding on our arms, and the fingers cut out of hockey gloves. The body armor they're playing with today - and plastic sticks - the soul has been lost from the contest, man against man. Today, you hit a man and have to pause to put bend your stick out across your knee! I miss the weight of my old stick, the smell of the rawhide and leather, and beads in the braids in the laces - Damn! - to be 14 again, eh?
A great piece! Thank you Stylin Strings for doing this. I talked with Alf a couple weeks ago and ordered a box stick. He said to call him back next July - he should have it done by then. Talk about a backlog. Alf is a true artist and I believe the Creator guides his hands as he makes these sticks.
Inspiring movie just great i wanna try to make a wooden stick the same way steaming and bending the wood ive seen it done in an older film from the 70's they go through the whole process its amazing
I've been up on eBay and have bought a couple wood sticks, one is a Matthew Etienne and another a Mohawk. The sticks are in great shape. I'll replace the leather cradle or send it to someone who does it.
I used to think $200 was alot for a traditional lacrosse stick. Then I saw how they are made and how long it takes, I completely understand the price now.😂
bearfoxmusic -.com We heard her CD playing while we were filming in Alf's shop and were like that song is perfect.:) We contacted her and bought all her Cd's
Matt Jolin not in Quebec I was kicked out of the game because all I had was my woody. they wanted me to use one of their Tupperware sticks and I said no, let me use my woody. and they wouldn't let me so I just didn't play that day. :-/
