We went on a day trip to Nazaré, Portugal. A beach town a 1.5 hour drive from Lisbon that’s known for it’s whopping great waves 🌊
The ‘big wave season’ runs between October - March and you can check just how big the waves are gonna be for the days ahead on nazarewaves.com 👩💻
If you’re lucky enough to be in the area when there’s ‘Giant Waves’ which reach heights of 20-30 metres, keep checking to see if the Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge gets announced. It could be at any point between now and the end of the season.
🏄♀️ It’s a competition where professional surfers will try their luck against huge waves - I would have LOVED to have witnessed it with my own eyes.
It’s also worth saying that Nazaré is just a 2 hour drive down from Porto as well - so it’s definitely one to keep checking on if you’re planning a trip already and this sounds right up your street 🔎

i went to Nazaré 3 times, it's a really beautiful place
Are the waves really monsters like that? That's insane how they get that big. I thought that was only in Hawaii.

I was traveling on a motorcycle with a boyfriend around Spain and Portugal 40 years ago. We ended up in Nazare. We went to the beach. It was so hot we decided to go into the water not realizing that no one else was in the water! Then we tried to get out!!!!! Wave after wave kept pulling us back out. We were being tossed like rag dolls. A crowd watched us. Thankfully we were both pretty good swimmers. My bottoms were sagging with sand as my boyfriend grabbed my arm and basically threw me up onto the beach before crawling out himself. Years later I was watching a surfing event… that’s when the reality hit me!
I would LOVE to go to Nazare' and see those wonderful waves and fearless surfers. its on my bucket list
Here in australia we have a beach called "Backbeach" in bunbury and holy cow i wont be suprised if a tsunami happens and people think its a normal wave

@@miguelmendon I'm stuck here in Massachusetts, USA. I hate it here and I'm miserable. I always wanted to go to/live in Nazare. Portuguese people are so awesome! So friendly. Portugal is a beautiful country.

@@miguelmendon thank you Miguel. I appreciate your kind words. I recently read an article that said that the three friendliest groups of people in the world were the Irish, the Canadians, and the Portuguese with the Portuguese being at the top of the list. It said that Portugal was also a very peaceful country with a beautiful coastline and some of the best cuisine in the world. I love the ocean and I used to surf a lot here in America and I always wanted to see the monster waves of Nazare'. Hopefully I soon will. Sending you my best wishes in your beautiful country. German big wave surfer Sebastian Steudtner has surfed what might be the biggest wave ever measured at 28.57 metres (93.73 feet) in Nazaré, Portugal. The height was measured using state-of-the-art drone technology

Nazare waves are much bigger than cortez bank
Nazaré still has bigger waves lol. The biggest surfed wave of Cortes Bank was 23.5m and that was 15 years ago under rare occasions, plus it's not even used as a surfing spot because of how dangerous and remote it is. Meanwhile you can get 30m+ waves at Nazaré during winter and it's not all that uncommon

Actually, the entire Portuguese coast has a long history of huge waves…… the most destructive in human history, was a tsunami that leveled Lisbon in the 1740’s, the tallest tsunami was in Alaska in 1964 , over 1000 feet , which was generated in a narrow bay or lake.
