Pretty sure it's played tuned down a whole step. Verse/intro is Am and D. There is a turnaround part (played after intro, between verses, after chorus) is just a G, but the bass note walks up from G as the root to B, to C, to B again. Chorus is C to D, to G (the turnaround part again) - repeated twice. Hope that makes sense. The turnaround/transition part kind of bridges all the parts together.
I love that he referenced Tim Heidecker's song "When I Get Up." It gives more insight into his sense of humor, and I think about that song almost every morning
Can’t wait to see MJ live in California next year. The mix of earnest and cheeky lyrics reminds me of Dylan. When you can laugh in the middle of a song that also moves you, that’s special.
Long time listener. I think this is my favorite interview- many reasons including the raw electric sound of his band {Love that mix} what a TREAT this is on UA-cam ! Thanks so much Raina Douris & team. MJL so down to earth- & his guitarist- etc Awesome
My entire youth is now fully restaged, with little rewrites and improvements. I know that MJ Lenderman is not Jay Farrar, but good lord this has Uncle Tupelo energy (and arrangement and ethos). He's as funny as Jeff Tweedy tried to be when he was young.
Honestly saddest lyrics in she's leaving you is "you know what is implied when your room is free, your feeling lucky" just the feeling that there no way you can invision anyone else in that bed but your a "free man now" That line makes me hurt more than any other in this song
I think it's what the character of the song has nicknamed his beach house in Buffalo. The character takes pride in things he shouldn't and brags about them prompting eye rolls from those around him.
Kind of Logan Lucky. These songs wouldn't fit in with that movie's score at all, but the themes of Appalachian and suburban Mid Atlantic men trying to hold onto a sense of self in silly, difficult, and undignified situations. The movies humor is pitched lighter than Lenderman's, but I laugh a lot at both. It's a fun, zippy heist movie.
Youre just now realizing that??? Lol Thats why hes good, normies cant write anything of value. Look at Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Cardi B, etc etc, its absolute soulless garbage.
@@ebifurai415 Jokes are funny. This isn't. He is being a cruel person picking at an easy target. And I can't stand Barbarino either, but who is MJ to write crap like this? Plus his Jordan take is also stupid.
This kid is so talented. I just did the math to figure out when he was 14, and it would have been 2013. The year Southeastern and Push the Sky Away came out, aka "about two years ago, I guess...?" Christ, we're getting old.
She's leaving you might be my song of the year. So good.
It truly is an incredible song!
Close second to wristwatch
"joker lips" is the hit, just wait...
@@timgreenglassit’s what grabbed me first… then really started loving Leaving You. Wrist Watch also strong.
@@shadrach422 "rip torn" is another good one...
bless that little smile and thumbs up at the end of she’s leaving you
Girl finally someone who's here for the same thing - 50/50 at least ;)
looks like he was supporting Xandy pinch-hitting that falsetto outro :)
A great songwriter, I love his voice, and gee he's cute!
Can’t get enough of this guy. Anyone got the chords to on my knees?

lol you like a song that’s meant to be a joke says a lot about your music taste. Tim Heidecker sucks.
@@johnvegas9059 It's more complex than that, which makes me wonder if you really understand MJ

Great interview, amazing performances. Love to see it
I'm thrilled to find this UA-cam channel ! Great music great interview !
Vaina hermosa. De los mejores discos del año, y de los mejores cantautores de Norteamérica actualmente. Joya.

raina is a very good interviewer
i’m crying at work on my 30 rn
curious- what struck a Nerve with you? I found it powerful as well- actually listening now Chicago)
she’s leaving you got me choked up too relatable 😅

The UT connection is a solid one.
I love MJ L, but he is no Uncle Tupelo, especially lyrically.

It’s referring to him getting comped the room by the casino. He’s such a loser that the casino gives him a room to get him to lose his money there.
He’s so cute
I thought we were going to know the mystery behind the “himbo dome” finally
nah
the people demand answers
Sure he’s not saying hippo dome.

good interview ! GOATED tunes and band
YESSSS
2nd comment- I'd heard one song before- but LIVE- fantastic guitarists ! Powerful MIx !
So cute
Manning Fireworks fav song from this album
If Pavement made an Americana record. Holy Smokes this is good.
Hold up, the Hot Dog Johnny's of Buttzville, NJ sweater... that's where I'm from!!!
siiiiiick
Great songwriter and lyricist, but above all he has mastered the art of perpetually seeming like he just rolled out of bed.
Love MJ, and hearing him make fun of Brendan Schaub makes me like him even more!
"So you say I got a funny face? I got no worries."
jt makes me money
Wristwatch being loosely inspired by Brendan Shwab is so fucking awesome lol
lol what? Bout to go dig into the lore about this
anyone got any movie recommendations that this music would fit right into? Feels like it gives me an itch. Love it. Superb performance
Paris, Texas. A Face in the Crowd, The Last Picture Show #maybe #idk

You gotta get into Kelly Reichardt! Her entire oeuvre barks up this tree
Sean Baker movies have this vibe
Coen Brothers, Todd Solondz
Anyone know why he censored “Piss” 😮

Anybody who name drops Harry Crews is alright by me.
And Larry Brown!
I love that he quotes 'The Gospel Singer' in 'Joker Lips'

I wonder if he’s a Drive-By Truckers fan… I hear an influence there.
He is. A big one.
His voice has a Jason Molina quality as well to me.
MJ Lenderman looks like he could be on the spectrum
Fuck ya! That's rad. I am too. Love to see that neurodivergent excellence.

Shes leaving you is a good song but this dude must have lead poisoning or something
I believe it’s just weed and being a chill guy
The band is kind of ass
Are you a fan of the album? To me it’s accurately representative. Just asking as their sound is simple by design.
Lmao
@ yeah I like the album. you can even see during the She’s Leaving You performance MJ thinking like “damn this is not a great performance”
Are you dumb? That On My Knees performance ruled
@@Big_Budifr the guitarist trying to be too flashy
MJ is great but stuff like mocking Travolta is pretty low rent. For such a smart guy, that is lazy and sophmoric.
