Davie you work around that vise like a Ballet dancer, unbelievable skills, I and most just love what you do and we are very fortunate to be able to watch these videos and learn from the master, thank you.
Davie, The artistry it takes to tye a fly like this is being totally underestimated, in my opinion. I watched this and only can hope I live long enough to have the experience with materials to, "Just make something up" in my head and have it come out so beautiful. I am not at all a sensitive type but this took me aback! Following a pattern is difficult enough, I pray I can do half as well in my lifetime. Thanks for sharing your tying wisdom with the world on youtube. Thanks very much, Sean Mooney
This is a great pattern to watch first thing in the morning! While you are wrapping the thread on that crazy long shank I had time to make a Coffee! 😁 A beautiful streamer!!
hi davie whot a cracking fly,you never fail to impress your fans,i love the big flies,my favorites your spey fly tyings, keep em coming, happy wrappings, davey, antrim.
very nice pattern. It looks very well balanced which is what I am trying to learn with the colors now. I have never been an artist, but what looks good to me is what I am trying to do. I am certain it will look appetizing to the fish as well. If not, I'll have to start collecting. All the best to you, Thanks for sharing. Sean ( I also find it really fun to read what I was on about a year or two ago.) :D
Jesus that's a big hook Davie, great pattern and tying as always mate. will tie a few of these up if I ever go fishing for great whites lol many thanks Kenny
Wow, now thats wat i call an artpiece! Great looking streamer Davie! Great tutorial again! You have good flytyers, than you have great flytyers and than theres Davie! Simply awesom!
Very beautiful streamer Davie. Thanks so very much for doing the video mate. You are a MASTER my friend. I enjoy it. Will be looking for others that you do. Cheers, OldBear from West Virginia
Hey Davie, I have had the chance to tie several patterns of these feather wing streamers for the guys at the Church. I tied Carrie Stevens grey ghost, and made variants with what streamer feathers that I had. Used Silver pheasant for some, with jungle cock cheeks and matched a grizzly and solid color (dyed the same color). I had a really good time. It took a while. They were all successes and one of my friends caught 21 fish that day. I was so happy! I got some of the fish too! Thanks so much for your taking the time to teach others. All the best to you and your family. Sean
Hi Sean, It's great to hear that you are tying your own versions and that your friends have fished them and had great results which I'm sure makes it feel that part of you is there, as this is how I feel when people get back to me about the flies I tye as well.. Well done... All the very best Davie
Very nice Davie. Mrs. Stevens is smiling I'm sure. One rule I'd like to mention about casting streamers. The wing should only pass by the hook the lenght of the hook gap. That way the wing doesn't wrap under the hook when you cast it. You can cheat a little with a trolling streamer like this one, but it's a good rule all around. short strikes are a concern as well. What you do here is over the top, fantastic stuff. what I admire most is your rock solid fundimentals. Very enjoyable. Russ
i would like to see more of this beutiful art of tying. I have been into these kind of classical patterns a few years and tying them with bad and good results. I have been inspiring few friends to these flies and we would like to see more classic streamers on yuotube
Hi Mika Pihlajamäki, They are beautiful flies to tye and I'm glad you enjoy tying, I rarely get a chance as they are not well known here in Scotland so when I tye them it's when I have some free time which is not very often..Hopefully I'll get a chance next year to tye one or two more so keep me in mind... All the very best Davie
Looking at this fly again, it looks like a a blend of salmon fly & Carrie Stevens elements. I've been wondering if the two styles could be combined, and it looks like they can!
Thanks Davie, no source locally in Nebraska, but found a shop in Ontario, Fly Mart, and your viewers might be interested to know they also have these hooks.
love tying freestyle and trying them , gr8 use of colour in that streamer , i like to try my own experimental flies , i always tie hares ear dubbing or mask in most , my fav material !! trout love it, i have yet to hook a salmon this this year , turned one on a green peter but it dove back deep , all the best for ur season, tight lines , and il be lookin out fr ur vids as i always do , and again i sincerely appreciate ur sendin me those hackles, Keith.
Top drawer as usual. Any chance, if you have the time of course, you could tie a green peter with the wing done in the ''roof top'' / ''tent wing'' style . Also a dabbler done in the 2/3 or 3/4 cloak would be nice to see. Keep up the good work.
Trying to figure out exactly what wax you use, noted the comments referring to how you soften it and also about a cake of prepared tiers wax. I have only been able to find "dubbing" wax in a twist up tube. Thanks for all the great videos, Denise
You can softening any materials type by adding diluter , for wax I use olive oil. Warming up wax to liquid like condition - just a little and mix drop of oil. You Can use very sticky wax from plumbing materials f.e. toilette wax ring , and mix with natural wax by melting together. Proportions by experiments.
David, I thought you might like to know that I tied this on a #4 7x-long BROOCH HOOK (for putting on your hat or shirt) I have it to my step dad as a gift for his birthday. He hasebt taken it off of his hat since!!!!
Hey Davie, I was fixing our my fly boxes yesterday for boat fishing on the lake and such, I have a lack of mini lures for brown trout, do you know any good patterns for some wild brown trout that would work well on the lochs? I have some kate mclarrens and White Cats.
I have the same wax and if you take a "thumbnail" size piece of it and work it - it takes a while because it is hard stuff, it will become pliable and even sticky. I am amazed that it holds to your finger, but it does!
Superb as always Davie! Can i ask you what type of bobbin holder you use? Also is there any one bobbin holder you would recommend over another, mainly for tying small trout flies? Looking to treat myself but would like your expert opinion. Keep up the good work. Danny
Davie, Do you ever use any thread brand beside UNI? The UNI 70 denier (8/0) is a twisted bonded thread that doesn't flatten. Flat thread has so many advantages over twisted thread I wonder why you wouldn't use the other brands? Examples are Wapsi UTC thread in the 70 or 140 denier and Lagartun in the 74 and 95 denier. Beautiful streamer, Davie. What is the best way to soften the tiers wax fresh out of the packet? The microwave does not work--I tried it. Thanks, Keith (Virginia)
Hi Quint Conlin, Here's a link to the wax I use and if you have any problems using it let me know, always remember less is best...And thank you for the kind comments... All the very best Davie
Hi Quint Conlin, I use Veniards Prepared Fly Tyers Wax which comes in the shape of a small disc. What I do is break off a small piece just enough when softened it will form the shape of a small button as this is what I stick to the side of my finger ready to be used when needed..When you soften it, it becomes tacky and this is how it stays on the side of my finger...I have attached a link to the wax for you to see... www.veniard.com/product3317/section9/ All the very best Davie
@@DavieMcPhail Thanks, Davie. I'm just about to start my first steps in fly tying - mainly as a hobby (having never fished) but I'm fascinated by how many different types there are and hoping I might one day fly fish off the coast of the Isle of Wight. Your videos are excellent soul food.
