@@rich453 Mini GT, INNO64, Pop Race, Tarmac Works, Era Car, Schuco. In that order. Mattel made one model that I wanted as a 9-pack exclusive. From there it went on a downward spiral and I ended up selling my entire 3500 Hot Wheels and Matchbox collection.
I agree, the high stance, and the door gaps are not a great look for this casting...but my biggest beef is with those exposed hinges. To be fair, I understand what they had to do to make those doors open the way they should, but those front fenders being cut out for the hinges like that are hideous! Looks like something cheap rather than something that's 35 bucks. And remember, they had two years to figure all of that out. I agree completely, I am a lot more satisfied with my Mini GT models, and for a huge fraction of the price.
I'd pick Mini GT all day long. I think it was a good idea of Mattel to try to include the iconic doors but they're just too complex and fragile in around 1:64 scale. In my collection I have the ice blue 64 Impala that I got for a deal that I couldn't pass up, it was $60 right after it was released. The only one I got straight from Mattel was the light up KITT. I LOVE that model and I think that that model is one of the greatest RLC style cars they've ever made.
Definitely prefer the Mini GT version. Having opening parts in 1/64 is not always a good thing. Especially when there are big gaps between the parts (the doors in particular). Not worth the $30 asking price imo. Thanks for the detailed review.
I bought one today, watched numerous reviews (yours included), and in my humble opinion, historically from a collectibility standpoint if it’s polarizing, has build and paint issues from the factory, it’ll be collectible in the future because hot wheels will perfect it eventually on newer models years down the road and everyone will want the “crappy” older one to add to their collection
I have been basically stay away from rlc for years. I only collect what I really want. Like the 1969 Dodge Charger RLC. I'm looking for to the Barracuda coming out soon. Other than that I will stick with Mini-GT. Thank you for sharing. You always do a great job.
I ordered one, I paid $44.14 shipped. I'm honestly very disappointed, only one door stays open, the other door feels like it's going to fly off, the gaps in the doors, just not worth it for the price. I'll definitely be returning mine, very poor quality for the price. I would definitely take the Mini GT Mclaren any day over the RLC Maclaren.
the seller that I'm using has the regular Mini GTs for $10.27, no tax, free shipping for orders over $75, so $82.16 for 8 regular Mini GTs. That's 4.3 Mini GTs for each RLC. Kind of crazy.
I knew they were going to screw this up, but I had no idea it was going to be that bad. 30 dollars for this (before shipping)? Any other premium company would go under if they put out such low quality products for that price. And i do agree with you that Elite64 offers a far better product for the price than RLC. You can just compare the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL from both lines. The Elite64 version just blows the RLC one out of the water, while still offering opening doors.
Yeah, I think the mainline version is incredible value for money. This thing doesn’t bring all that much more to the table for me. This is the reason I’m big on the mainlines, and honesty am even pulling away from the premiums. I think those also are lacking quality for their price.
Yea I have black mainline of this car it's one of my favorites I'm gonna put real riders on it eventually Mainline are were ya bang for buck comes from and me and nephew race em 😂❤
All my F1's were in the basics line. Ain't no way i'm spending real money on 1/64 scale. For that money might as well save up for a decent 1/18. Tampo headlights for that price is inexcusable. Checked out Mint GT. Never heard of them before, very cool!
I'm glad you're starting to look into the details of the model like how much it can offer for the price. I have had the same gripe with TLV as well. Especially with the countach they had announced.
To say a word of defense in the favor of Hot Wheels, their main line F1, as well as their premium, was very good, stance and lines look perfectly correct. The hinges here are quite tricky to reproduce
i`ve been disappointed in the rlc line for awhile, too pricey for what you get the last good one was the purple van i`m very picky which rlc models i buy these days
Yours is definitely one of the better ones ive seen online. Mine wasn't too bad except on the right side theres like a glob of glue that dripped onto the paint behind the door. so it only looks good from one side kinda disappointed but definitely glad i didn't get a really messed up one
DJ CONGRATS on the first “other than weekly” video! “Horses for courses.” Of course Mini GT, KH for the price plus details. Any RLC these days is a flashy interpretation, and now with cost cutting, quality is suffering. In 2024 we’re seeing about 40% having plastic parts where metal was always had been used. HW has mastered the price point with Gold Premium levels and Elite 64. RLC is less profitable for them. Spectraflame is what those w “JDM Brain” dream about!
I’d sooner see the rlc eliminate opening parts and reduce the price some. I really don’t like opening parts. One more thing to break off luckily my Mclaren is actually very nice. The doors open smoothly and the gaps are a lot better than the one you have. My complaint is the wheels and tires and ride height
I agree: Not a fan of opening parts. It bothers me that Hot Wheels' red-haired step-child, Matchbox, seems to be spending so much of their energy on opening parts lately.
I didn't buy this one; not because I dislike it or have a complaint, but rather, just because these RLC releases have been coming hard and fast lately, and I can barely keep up. It occurs to me that maybe RLC's frenetic release schedule is a partial explanation for the new Overdrive service: With so many releases on the horizon, perhaps RLC wishes to trick us into more purchases with the opt-out necessity of Overdrive? Reminds me of the old Columbia Record Club days, when, if one didn't return the opt-out cards every month, one found oneself with some very expensive records--and later, CDs--in one's mailbox. But I shouldn't be likening RLC to Columbia, right? I mean, afterall, the Columbia service was free, and with some careful management, resulted in much of my record/CD collection when I was in college, gotten for a very minimal amount of money.
This reminds me EXACTLY of the green Lamborghini countach, the doors sucked, the paint was scratched before I even opened the car, and the decals were off. Still waiting to see how mine came out, but for 40$ per car, we should be getting top quality.
Opening doors are cool. Only complaint is with the tampoed headlights and taillights!! They should have plastic lenses with molded headlights for what these RLC cars cost! Mattel loves to cut corners they shouldn't cut to keep costs down and profits high!!! Hotwheels does 1/64 better than anyone else and I do like the RLC version better than the mini gt.
Excellent review! Thanks for your objectivity, very much appreciated. I would get the MiniGT for my collection anyday over HW, no doubts about that. Are we not tired of complaining of Mattel's paint and print quality by now? Has anyone seen an effort to improce to date?
It is below average for a “premium” rlc model at that price…. Main stuff: The windows are not fused well with the doors, looks very slipshod The doors are not smoothly closing into the body The doors don’t stand up when fully open…
Good looking and very cool car .. no doubt .. but the left side door looked like some strangeness with the paint or whatever on the window and those doors felt wonky and cheap 🤨
I passed on this one. I am not a fan of opening doors. IMO most 164 with opening doors, the body lines are completely thrown off and the inner door panels & rest of the interiors are not very nicely detailed. I'm ok with opening hoods, for some reason they don't mess up the look of the car except for the Mangusta, that car was horrendous and although I appreciate the effort for trying to give us more for the money, they should have just made it w/o the feature. I like opening tailgates on p/u's and opening hatches are a horror story if the body post is visible.
You described that opening features problem very well. For my part, I dislike opening parts because I'm a customizer, and it's very difficult to paint features that need to fit together very closely, but still move, without the likelihood of paint chips and other forms of ruined paintjobs.
Haven’t opened mine yet. I just got it though as an overdrive subscriber I should have received this much sooner. Still in the box but I’m now worried. Lol😂
Agree with others, Mini GT, and I'll add M2. For the price, Hot Wheels is simply outclassed by those brands. I guess this is why they're using blister packs vs display cases on many RLCs and Elite 64s. If no one opens the package, no one knows it's substandard.
This is an unfortunate effort by HW. LCD blows away every diecast model brand and for less than this. Opening panels are a curse for this hobby. If this was $10 I'd get it since I like the car, but nowadays I only buy the HW mainlines for value and tooned since they're not supposed to look real.
I believe you went too easy on Hot Wheels and the RLC crew, especially after the delay in release, nothing seems fixed on this Compared to the MiniGT it’s just bad.
And regarding the whole opening parts debate... Once again, other companies have shown time and time again that it can be done beautifully, for cheaper than this. I suppose Mattel is cutting so many corners to maximize profit, and producing these "limited" models in such high numbers, that quality and good design just have to be ignored.
Yah, other models has shown that it can be done right, so why isn’t the biggest dog in the game doing it right? Ridiculous and also no respect for their customers money. They’re supposed to be the best
I almost didn't renew my RLC membership this year. The only reason I did was for a chance of getting the Midnight Purple R34. I did get the Cobra in pink today.
I considered buying this RLC model but didn't due to the price. Plus I was more interested in the blue one coming from Mini GT. The stance on this model is terrible. It needs to be slammed down bigtime, especially the front end. Pretty big fail IMHO. It's a darn shame.
While I don't criticize these RLC releases very often because they are just "toys" after all, albeit very pricey "toys," I will say I could honestly do without all the opening parts. Yeah, it's cool I suppose but in the end, I'd rather have a clean, sealed model. I'll give it to the design team, those doors were probably a tall task. I'd be fine with them being sealed in the end.
Movable features are hard on this scale, but it can be done better like in some Tomica Limited Vintage Neo or PGM models. This RLC McLaren lacks mirrors, a big failure. I think the best diecast 1/64 McLaren F1 is the one produced by LDC, better than Mini GT except that it does not roll because of the way they implemented the brakes/caliper behind the rim. I like opening doors, and I would buy this one despite the mistakes, but missing mirrors in the model is unacceptable for $40+, I would add $10-$20 more and get a Tomica LVN. On the other hand, this is the only McLaren F1 with opening doors in 1/64, which has its own merit, no other manufacturer had the stomach to do it, as much as I like Tomica, their premium McLaren F1 is quite basic, nothing premium about it and no mirrors! I would love to see Tomica release an LVN version of the F1 with well-implemented movable features as they did with the Ferrari F40 o the Lamborghini Countach
My disappointment was only a smudge in the gloss paint on the roof and one door not staying fully open besides that it’s ok but yes not too impressed for the money
Just received mine and sending it back to Mattel, one of the doors is so loose that it doesn’t close or open properly, and horrible paint blemishes 👎🏽👎🏽
Bro the kaido line from mini gt is $25 after tax and shipping and it provides leagues better quality and detail. Even the basic $15 mini gt have better detail and quality than these rlc cars. But if people keep paying for it, there's no need for mattel to change their ways.
It's amazing how many crybabies there are about this one car I got mine no issues and I love it if you don't like them don't buy them if you buy them don't cry about them
Not a fan of any car that costs that much and comes with whatever that wad of fuzz is, also don't really care for Mclaren, Hot Wheels makes way to many. Have a good one, cheers!
@championdjk if you want another option for the mclaren F1, at about HALF the price of the RLC, you have to find the LCD version, its one step up from the MiniGT except for the rolling, mine rolls with just a smidge of friction, but its within my tolerance of acceptable rolling (i get rid of all my non rollers). Edit: found the vid i made of it, rolling was improved by like 90% after loosening the base screws. ua-cam.com/video/T1vYGpGh00k/v-deo.htmlsi=azPvjqhD89h_bxgc
Everyone is bitching about this car but I don't care. This was the vehicle that got me back into loving cars. I don't ever plan on opening this regardless of what everyone else thinks
I did not buy it because it looked cheap and cheesy in the promo pictures. I’m also not a big fan of supercars. I’d 10 out of 10 times go with mini GT over Hot Wheels for accuracy and quality. I have a few of their Shelby Mustangs and Cuvic Type R cars and they are fantastic in detail, accuracy to scale and realism. I absolutely hate moving parts on 1/64 scale cars because it never comes off good. That’s my opinion and I’m glad I didn’t spend $30+ on this piece of crap, oh the paint looks horrible on it too!
The tech to create this 1/64 scale McLaren F1 is second to none. Even the Hot wheels from Jay Leno is better than that silver Mini GT. And the interior of this Model is exquisite, despite you didn't even care to show it. Life should be appreciated with this kind of love and effort in your hands. And the opening doors are a beautiful conduct to see that interior like if it is the self same soul of the car. Look at the Schuco models for example, in those the wheels don't roll and are just to display, a very poor Ingenierie.
No thanks don't want. All rlc are overpriced😂😂😂 price of rlcs should be $10 not 25 plus shipping.😢 Hot Wheels are making a killing off the RLC line no thank you

Mini gt has decimated HW you simply cannot compare the two. The rlc mclaren looks comical next to the mini gt. What a disappointment.
As long as YOU'RE happy, nothing/no one else matters.
Worth it for those loyal, fomo hot wheels collectors.
Sadly, I fell into that trap with this car.
Poooppopoppooip
lol Thanks Son
This is unacceptable. Not a favorite diecast to begin with there’s something off about the proportions and oddly the basic looks better.
MiniGT 👍 Hotwheels 🤮
The tech to create this 1/64 scale McLaren F1 is second to none. Even the Hot wheels from Jay Leno is better than that silver Mini GT. And the interior of this Model is exquisite, despite you didn't even care to show it. Life should be appreciated with this kind of love and effort in your hands. And the opening doors are a beautiful conduct to see that interior like if it is the self same soul of the car. Look at the Schuco models for example, in those the wheels don't roll and are just to display, a very poor Ingenierie.
Wow, that looks Horrible!
No thanks don't want. All rlc are overpriced😂😂😂 price of rlcs should be $10 not 25 plus shipping.😢 Hot Wheels are making a killing off the RLC line no thank you
