Nice job welding those ubolts back together. 👍😁😂🤣
shined up nice, didn't they?
@@alphaladog hell yeah lol
You can't even tell it came from the rust belt 😂
@@danlevesque5437
He's that good!
@M DC oh I'm sure, I saw it on a meme, it's gotta be true. LOL
yeah, FIRE!
nice Beavis reference there :)
So happy you found your hat!
Here in NYC every shop is a peal’em and stick’em! Haha.
I recently started playing The Division 2. After watching this video i realise the character I created to save the world looks exactly like Eric. Must have been a subconscious event knowing Eric can save the world.
smoke skull Eric is a look-a-like to a buddy of mine named Ralph. They both have quite the personalities.
Mack camelback suspension U-bolts are the scariest ones I've done. There's a little potential energy in a fastener torqued to 1400 ft-lbs.
I have a main broken at the front so I got some at the boneyard. 1988 Silverado
I had 321,000 miles on my '96 c-1500,the 35 gal. gas tank was wired up in back because gas tank strap rusted through,1/8th steel, gas tank seam rusted through, 2 two inch rust holes in top half of gas tank, exhaust manifold on passenger side rusted through at union wired together, front sway bar frame connections rusted though. The whole frame and chassis was about 1/16th thick.I think the engine died from self inflicted wounds to avoid killing it's owner.I live 50 miles north of Traverse City,Michigan, the road salt up here has a blue dye, when you drive and the slush has a blue tint, don't you think it's a bit excessive,New York has nothing on Charlevoix County Road Commission, the weeds and grass on the roadside don't start growing till August because of salt,no need to spray grass killer.3/8ths thick cast iron eaten through by salt I was amazed,it's the worst case of automobile bone cancer I've ever seen. The only thing worth recycling on that truck was the exhaust pipes, stainless steal.
I'm surprised that you didn't use fluid film in between the leafs.
No screw jacks?? GJ tho
I really need to get out more.....
Nah, you're good.
Watched this video twice and managed to replace my second leaf in an hour after a regular shop wanted close to $500. Appreciate the content you provide, keep it up.
The necessary field of knowledge and dexterity to fix modern cars is unequaled in others fields. From scoping faulty signals from sensors and CAN bus troubles to replacing a single leaf in a rear spring: brain surgery and blacksmithing skills in one Tech. Thanks for passing it along to the rest of us.
Being a mechanic in P.A.,, I just smile every time you break out the torches. Nothing like wrenching in the rust belt.
Ben Yunik. I second that, north east Ohio here. 5 minutes from Sharon PA. Lol
@@jamesbatdorf1665 I'm out Linesville way... the struggle is real man.
Recognize the sound right away, that's for sure! I'm in Philly here. Lol
Central PA area!
I feel bad for all you poor bastards. Southern Ga tech here and I don't even know what rust is. 😂
Eric. After watching you for several years. You have given me the confidence to tackle just about any problem on my 1994 GMC Sierra. Thanks for all you do and show us.
Always a good video when you have fire, molten metal, a rusty truck, and Ms Hanna.
Didn't know you can weld together and re-use bolts like that. I am going to save oodles of money now. LMAO
Man I should have thought about that years ago lmao
literally tens of dollars!
On another note, I also live in a Salt state, PA, while it doesn't get as crazy in NY (I lived in Syracuse for 15 years), we see Rusty vehicles constantly and I don't understand why. I traded my 2012 F150 after owning it for 7 years no RUST (I live int he Poconos)... Dealer asked me how is your truck not Rusty... I said because I take the time to clean it especially the undercarriage even during the winter after a snow event and they salt within a day or two I hit the self serve car-wash and spray the hell out of the wheel wells and get down and spray the underbody or I take it through a high-pressure auto wash to get it cleaned down. then 1st warm day of the spring she is pressure washed again and then undercoated with the Rustoleum undercarriage protectant, did this while living in Syracuse, my 2005 300C still has no Rust
and all this time, I thought I was the only one who is obsessive-compulsive enough to do this! my 1983 car did 4 winters in New Jersey (damp and freezing or hot and humid are the two seasons there).
Welded springs! Must be one of Ivan's costumers!
Happy to see that the fuel tank doesn't have a very small leak.
That rust makes me homesick for upstate NY... NOT. I've had enough vehicles dissolve out from under me. Down here in Virginia, when I get my '89 GMC K1500 inspected every year, they always comment on the surface rust it's got underneath... I always tell them that they've never seen "real" rust!
How do you know when you're insanely biased towards a UA-cam channel?
When you give the video a "Like" before you even watch it.
Two thumbs up. Would definitely "Like" before watching again.
The torch master does it again.
Ozzstar he’s getting the practice in for the retirement scrap yard dream 👍🏻😂
If there's one thing about mechanic videos, they always end up being more fascinating than you think. Keep on truckin', and we'll keep watchin'. 8)
Poor engineering that you would have to remove a fuel tank inorder to access the front bolt.
Well, it is a GM... Poor engineering and GM kinda go hand in hand lol
Repair wise yes but they also design them to rather be more efficient in production.
I guess my Tundra is poorly engineered since it takes 6 hours to get at and replace the starter.
@@hochhaul that's actually becoming fairly common now my Titan has it under the manifold as well. Basically any vehicle with the 5.6 Endurance such as the Titan, Armada, NV Van, Ifiniti QX80, QX56, Q70, M56.
For Toyota the Starter in the valley is anything with the 5.7 Iforce such as the Tundra, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, Lexus LX570. Not sure if all are the same but for Toyota it's the UR engines with the starter in the valley.

HANNAH HOME FOR SPRING BREAK?
I see what you did there 🤣
What a Re-Leaf!
Lol😂
Good job, very informative, know what to do if I ever have to change a leaf spring !!!!! Why do they call it a "" Leaf "" spring when it doesn't look anything like a leaf ????????
Thanks Eric, keep me going for a while yet. Worth the trip to you to fix it.
Glad you took your truck to Eric, to have it done right, by a good guy!
So what’re ya haulin that broke that spring?
Matthew Marullo it was a truck that was used in the woods for hunting I got
I wonder how many people believed Eric when he said he had the u bolts put back together and shined up....lol man
He didn’t?
Hahahah
Put your damn ear plugs in! You're gonna end up like me. WHAT?
More scrap metal for your collection. You should be due for a Spring scrap run soon. Been awhile since ya did one of those vids.
The rust will build up between your leaves in your springs. The small plates between the leaves allows you to be able to power wash your springs out. It also give the rust space to build up before "rust jacking" the leaves apart. We pretty much do the same job in our shop almost every day. If you live in Canada we sell these kits as well on our website.
OMG welding bolts back together, next thing you know he will be welding in ball joints. LOL
Don't laugh, I had to weld in ball joints, 70's. Mopar...
Colab video with Adam Booth and/or Keith Rucker! Weld build up the worn ball and socket/machine back to original specs and reinstall!
@@timothybarney7257 Good one!!
ETCG did it.
Wow New York is really tough on vehicles you can see the salt eating that vehicle way in front of your eyes. I live in Michigan and my 2004 only has a few specks of rust on it. I don't think it would make it 2 years in New York by the looks of that vehicle. Like Eric says pennies from heaven falling on the concrete. Thanks for the vajayo...lol... I just replaced both Leaf packs on my Silverado. And shackles,But I upgraded to a little beefer Spring. We have a company here In Saginaw Michigan That you can purchase from, and they're close enough I went and picked them up as opposed to paying shipping..kick the tires and light the fire..its spring boys....
1991 Silverado 476,000 miles no rust. Texas
SAG inaw lol i get it!!
Michigan Truck Spring. We buy our springs from them too. The rust is bad here in southeast Michigan but it's the potholes that will get ya!!
I'm in Buffalo and HATE rust.I go thru Fluid Film by the gallon.
Do you weld & polish the U-bolts yourself, or do you send them out? Whoever does the work did a GREAT job - they look brand new! :-)
Does an evap leak scare you running the gas wrench ?
I assume the filler neck is rusted out and leaking vapor on every one of them I see ;)
The ATS guy is from Philly so NYC Philly And Jersey even though they will say they sound different for our outsider speak they all sound about the same
Forget about it
Northern state mechanics are better with a torch than midwest or southern state mechanics.
Always enjoy your videos. But man I hope you wear some sort of hearing protection when your hammering metal like that, or you're going to have serious tinnitus and/or hearing loss! And believe me, you do not want that to happen!.
Exactly do not under estimate the use of hearing protection. I have hearing loss at 42 years old.
Ivan would have welded that one up for sure lol nice video man
I love starting my day with a little s.m.a.
Thought i had to deal with rust. Manitoba roads arent as salty.
Never done a chebby, but ford is popular. My driveway is a little rough, and makes them sound like an ice cream cart coming up the driveway.
You don't have to drop the gas tank. So here's what you do... You cut the bolts and slide it out away from the gas tank and replace said Bolt & Nut:-)
Same with trailing arms on 97-02 expedition
Great vid. I was going to just replace the spring set. Just? Remove the gas tank? Geeze!
So now thanks to you and your ATS recommendation I will be replacing "just" #2 spring.
Thanks again!
Broken springs are like a totally foreign concept to me. Maybe that's because I live in Southern Arizona. 😎 Lol what's a cutting torch? What's rust-proofing? Just kidding, sometimes we do need a torch just becaue something is really really tight.
You're good at working on that rusty old junk. You should move to Wisconsin. Tell you what, you move here and I'll give you my Ford PU. Oh, wait. If I give you my Ford I won't need a mechanic who is capable of working on rusty old junk.
Where is his "bell" I am encouraged to ring? I see up/down thumbs, share, save, report, but no bell.
I drive a Dodge Dakota, 03. Replaced both sets of springs this past weekend. Was told had to drop the fuel tank to get to the driver side bolt. Nope, don't need to. Since I was replacing them, I simply cut the bolt, popped the cut off end out beside the tank. When I replaced it, I put the bolt in the other way, but towards the gas tank. Simple fix. BTW, was told to do that by a fella that had worked in a spring shop for 29 years
I am not sure if you answer ? on your comment section but was wanting to now if you think poorly made steel is the reason these are breaking? I have a 1988 1500 Scottsdale and a friend many years ago recommended me putting Leaf spring clamps on each end of my springs which I did. Also do you now if there was a recall on the springs on the 1988 model, I am 2nd owner it was 4 years old when I got it and I never received a recall notice. thank you. and I enjoy your channel and am a subscriber.. 1 other thing is there not something you guys can put on cars and trucks up there to keep them from rusting like that? we just don't have that problem in Alabama
I love the way he says Chevrolet. Lmao. You can tell he feels the love.
Do people not use undercoating in NY state? My 05 looks far better. Truck lived it’s life in NH before I bought it.
What's the brand and part # for the spring I need this exact spring mines cracked 2010 GMC Sierra 1500
No Fluid Film????
Isn't Thru-Way spring on Mt. Read Blvd. anymore? I bought many springs sets out of there in my day.
Helping a friend with a set of sacked out rear springs on a 3/4 ton Chevy with a low budget we cut the center bolt and tapped the individual leaves with a ballpein hammer , wire brushed them and put them back together and lo and behold the springs come back to life. Saved him and ton of money and he went back to hauling wood again with no problems.
Must be dorman springs.....rusty right out of the box.
Made in PA. We're second only to NY for rust.
@@DefaultAccount100 I live in PA..i know all about it...
His Say aftermarket made America stop leaf springs long time cheap spring made 90% poor country don’t care people in Australia still make leaf springs and coils springs
"If I can do it, you can do it". Well, if I did it, it would probably take forever and I'd do it wrong to boot!
What the hell are they using there in the winter?? ACID!!!!???? My car is 20 years old and has NO rust.
I'm watching you almost since he beginning in youtube and I'm never tired to see you work, you are so good mechanic you taught me a lot Thank you.
Well ya had that done in about 1/4 the time it takes me. Nice job Eric
@South Main Auto Repair LLC God damn man! GM must be getting some real crap parts these days. i am an auto mechanic myself and did the job for 30 years. retired because of a disability from diabetes back in 2008.over the years i have worked on all sorts of cars, foreign and domestic. but steering and suspension was a specialty of mine.i have done leaf springs on many different vehicles but really never replaced just one broken spring. to me it was all or nothing replace the set or don't waste my time.
Was this video sponsored by Napa? I do wish I had a mechanic like you in my area I just got ripped off by my mechanic so it's time to look for a new one.
It's funny you mentioned the compressor last night. It doesn't usually bother me, but it seemed twice as loud in this vid.
BTW, Mee-Maw's cure for that cold was to rub the soles of your feet with garlic for 6-10 days, works almost every time. (and take plenty of ice cream)
Probably just needs an oil change. The compressor in our shop started getting noisier than normal so I changed out the straight 30 grade oil and it quieted down a good amount.
He may also have just placed the camera a little closer to the compressor on the new tripod. I don't know if he has an intake muffler/resonator. If we knew the make and model of his compressor someone could send him one.
Come to think of it, I think he's also wearing a mic.
The shackle broke and went through the bed. And then the ring on the Bushing snapped And I can wiggle the whole busted shackle😢
Those spacers between the leafs cause the leaf to break after a while. Creates a bending point. F-150 terrible for that in the 2004 period. The shims were there to supposedly help reduce the friction between the leafs and create a better ride.
Come on Eric, rule number 1 for mechanic. Never scratch your face with dirty gloves.
Nice repair Eric O
I was wondering if you need to put those small plates back in that came out between the leafs......
Save the springs for blacksmith buddies to make knives out of..
How's the harbor freight impact holding up.
THRU WAY SPRING IN ROCHESTER IS STILL THRU WAY SPRING. NO NAME CHANGE. THEY'RE ABOUT 2 MILES FROM MY SHOP AND THEY HAVE EVERY SPRING U CAN THINK OF
hey there eric you should try commercial spring out of new Alexandra pa they are family owned for more than 30 years they have springs for all types of vehicles and the hardwear too I use them all the time great family too sure they can help you out to
call me old school but back then they put gaitors around the springs to keep the dirt and water out, worked fine
Us South Main Auto viewers sure like these rugged videos, with things like dirt, fire, rusty metal, pry bars and ball peen hammers. All it was missing was caustic chemicals.
And Brake Cleaner!
Why not replace the whole Pack? Are they that expensive in your area?
"I don't know where our center bolt went." *blows dust away*. 😂
How could you forget (or not say) a guy with the name of Disco?
I was wondering how your cordless earthquake impacts were holding up since I haven't seen you use them in a while.
1/2 went to AVE channel I believe to get probed. 😁
I watch a ton of your videos. Just never comment. But I was sitting here watching this one and was like, dang he does a lot to try and help others. So I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time and show us everything that goes into finding and repairing problems on today's cars
You don't have to pull the tank at all buddy good try back yard guru I replaced mine today and never had to touch the tank!
that poor trucks been rode hard and put away wet more than a few times. holy smokes. even the door skins rusty lol
Take the whole truck for scrap!,doors are already rusting out.
I am curious why did you remove the bolt on the main mounting bracket
Why don't people wash their vehicles to help fight corrosion after the salty winter season in the east coast?
You definitely don't mind a torch around the fuel tank. Good work all around
love your videos man i watched like 3 so far n it made me sub to your channel. i like automotive channels that do give you a bunch of horse shit that they know nothing about
I LOVE wack-a-mole!!
So if that bolt wasent broke can u jus back it out with vise grips of pioe wrench
Thank you Mr. O. You made that look too easy. I always get nervous with sparks around the feed bag...
Someone sure likes those curbs though. Rubbed right through to the white rubber layer that makes the raised white letters.
You need to do a "Diagnose Dan" impression, not seen it yet..................
24 thumbs down from 'the other spring shop'..
Good job
What glasses do you use for torching, Mr. O?
How many more year's do you think that truck will be on the road
Welcome back Hannah!
I put a pair of ATS springs. I talked to Bob.
Forgot the shims between the leafs. Grease them they won't rust
isn't that a Jonny cash song...one leaf at a time, and it only cost me a dime!
