  • Born of primitive file sharing clients, a small group of labels in Europe and the unfortunate name of an early list serve, IDM or intelligent dance music was the sound of the future in the early ‘90s. Here are the 10 best IDM albums.

beautiful picks! Lots of good IDM out there that gets so ignored by critics putting very few of the greats on a pedestal sadly.

Amon does mostly breaks and sample work, less ambient. IDM started as a reaction to the confusion whereby AMBIENT of the early 90's became confused with the new styles of the late 90's, Autechre was Ambient at first, vangelis, aphex, it was all ambient. Glitch became a different kind of new thing, which was more prioritized as the foreground of the music, where glitch before had been a type of sample work within ambient, it became more of a type of percussion style. that was my take of it anyways. while urban ambient techno had a big boost in the early 90's it was only labeled IDM at least 5 years after the artificial intelligence CD, and wiki sais early 90's but that's inaccurate, the term didnt exist in early 90s.. This cd is artificial LifeForms and was much more famous than any WARP records releases: www.discogs.com/The-Future-Sound-Of-London-Lifeforms/master/6526 Warp records has in fact consistently not attracted artists like BOC, FSOL, and I see WARP as riding the IDM style as a commercial label.

Anomalous warp records doesn't automatically mean idm. Boards of Canada isn't IDM. Four Tet Rounds is also very debatable, it has elements of idm/glitch but I personally wouldn't call that IDM

WRONG?! Find a SINGLE CD with the word IDM in the text prior to 1997?!?!? Sorry, i was 12 at the start of the 90's, IDM did not exist prior to at least 1997!!! and in 94 the most passionate ambient dance music collector's CD's would have mostly comprised Vangelis, Mellow techno compilations, Brian eno, pink floyd, and it was in about 92-94 that massive attack arrived, and Autechre, THE ORB, Aphex twin, THE BLACK DOG (originators of IDM ) techno abstractism, BEAUMONT HANNANT, LFO, FSOL!!!! Union Jack first album, also was ambient in an early trance music style and was contemporary with The Orb. YOU FORGET future sound of london??!?!? these were the FIRST producers of URBAN, drug influenced AMBIENT music which was slow techno with a beat in it and ambient synthesizer experimentation for space cadets. beatless ambient was not popular in shops back then, I practically never heard beatless ambient in the music shops prior to about 1998. The word IDM seemed to arrive in force in about 1998, to describe album which were a departure from ambient and had mostly glitch work in them and attempted to make temporal irregularity in the chord progressions and temporal irregularity to regular percussion. All the artists that you state are actually proficient music writers, Jenkinson, a fan of Aphex Twin, BOC, are great at chords and melodies, and all those most famous artists used a lot research for their synth sounds, ambient moods, and musicality (chords)... I always associated IDM with a try-hard cut and paste music style which tried to copy the individual styles of all the great artists you mention, but with a fast, copy paste, chopped up ambient approch which didn't do justice to the considerable effort that was in the first albums of the artists of your list. The only one who is truly proficient as a musician is Jenkinson who writes well enough to be able to make music in any style of his choosing without even trying hard. and Aphex, who doesnt care any more about hte end sound, even BOC who are awesome musicians take considerable effort to weave together a musical composition with an experimental edge, it's more difficult for them than for jenkinson for example, but they have more attention to the end result in their recent releases. I believe that the first use of INTELLIGENCE as an acutal music style in GB was INTELLIGENT DRUM AND BASS IN 1996, to differentiate Artistic DNB from Rave DNB... Ingelligent ambient, Dance music, didn't exist prior to 1996, it was still called ambient, experimental ambient, artificial intelligence was just a fairly obscure compilation among 20-50 similar compilations of UK urban ambient of those times. IDM only became a word AFTER intelligent DNB mad the word intelligent commonly accessible to describe a music style, and then AFAIK, the word IDM arrived 2-3 years after Intelligent DNB. I am just stating my recollection of music terms and styles of the 90's, having researched them avidly. that i never heard IDM word used prior to 1997 and certainly i heard it after i heard many albums and references of the IDB genre. The music shops never had an IDM label on anything, no IDM classification for some albumbs, but Intelligent DNB did certainly exist in 1996 as a subdivider for the HMV catalogue and on CD labels long before i heard the word IDM.

the best labels for IDM that i knew was perhaps rephlex records: www.discogs.com/Musiq-Tango-NVectif/master/21332 founded by aphex twin and another in 1991
    this was awesome too: www.discogs.com/Various-Dream-Injection/release/33098
    ...
this label is a lineup of IDM Artists long before the internet pc's were even used for making music. www.discogs.com/label/1131-General-Production-Recordings-GPR
Dream Injection complilation illustrates how Freeform urban experimental synth music was in the early 90's compared to how style-dependant it became after, and how much it tried to copy individual artist styles later one. IDM for me is synonymous with stagnation compared to compilations like dream injection, which had many famous IDM Artists, but also all the other experimental urban ambient techno producers of the time. In fact beatless ambient and drone didn't exist much back then, it was probably called drone or something, and it wasnt commercialized, so ambient was all called ambient in the early 90s.

It's a top 10 - which is way to short of a list - especially for IDM fans who can handle a much longer list. Top 25 (or more) would be much better and would allow for more entries and less bitching - especially if you view the list in no particular order once it's finished. Think of it as not a contest but a "list of top IDM albums one should hear at least 2 times in their lives" :) All of us like confirmation on our favorites but we all want to make sure there isn't a very important album we may have overlooked or not given enough attention to. That's why I look at lists like these ;) And for the comments - which may point to obvious albums that didn't make the cut but are very worthy of checking out. Cheers.
