Atheist question:
The Qur'an says that the structure of the earth is like a bed or a carpet (Quran 15:19, 20:53, 43:10, 50: 7, 51:48, 71:19, 78: 6, 79:30, 88:20 and 91: 6). ! But no one has ever seen a spherical carpet! Doesn't the Qur'an say the earth is flat?
Answer:
First, nowhere in the Qur'an is the size of the earth called flat. Second, can anyone flatten the world of the Qur'an with irrefutable reasoning? Never. Let's take a look at some of the Qur'anic verses given to them by which the Qur'anic world is made flat.
"We have spread out the earth, and placed mountains on it, and caused every thing to grow therein." (15:19)
"He has made the earth a resting-place for you, and has made for you therein paths, and has sent down rain from the sky, and therewith We have brought forth various kinds of plants." (20:53)
"Who has made the earth a bed for you, and made in it ways for you that you may reach your destination." (43:10)
"I have spread out the earth, and placed in it mountains, and caused to grow in it all kinds of beautiful plants." (50: 7)
“I have spread the land. How beautifully I am able to spread. ” (51:48)
"And the earth has stretched him forth." (69:30)
"And to this world - how did he expand?" (6:20)
Their argument is that since the earth is compared to carpets and beds, the Qur'an calls the earth flat. The reasons why this is an irrational argument are as follows-
1. Let's start with a simple argument. When ‘moon face’ is said to compliment someone’s face, to say ‘moon face’ does not mean a face as round as the moon; Rather it means beauty. So when you say carpet or bed, it means flat - such an argument is nothing but an argument.
2. Bed is usually a soft mattress. That is, the bed is the place where one can rest in comfort and ease. In addition, beds are usually kept in a protective place to protect them from the sun's heat and harmful rays, storms, rain, wild animals and poisonous insects. Now let's come to the case of Quran. The Qur'an does not explain the shape of the earth by comparing it to a bed or a carpet. Rather, this comparison is very logical and significant. We all know that of all the planets and satellites that have been discovered so far, Earth is the only one where water, air and life exist. That is, the easier it is for humans and other animals and plants to live on the planet Earth, the easier it is for them to rest and relax, the easier it is for them to survive, the easier it is for them to move to another planet. And this is why the Qur'an compares the earth to a bed. In other words, in the Qur'an, the earth is compared to a bed and the earth is made suitable for living and sustaining life, not the shape of the earth. It can be understood only by reading the verses. Just as the bed is kept in a protective place, so is the earth kept in a protective covering (21:32).
3. Neither the words ‘Shape’ nor ‘Flat’ are used in these verses of the Qur’an. So what is actually meant in the verses is to be considered. First, some translators did not use the words 'carpet' or 'bed'. Secondly, who said that if you want to do carpeting, the road has to be flat like a straight line! The road that is built over the hill is curved or semicircular. Isn't that semicircular street carpeted? As a result, why can't the carpet be laid on a round object? In a sense, the top skin of a football can be called a carpet. People lay carpets on the floor of the house mainly for some reasons- when the floor is rough, when the floor is cold, to enhance the beauty of the floor, etc. Just as carpeting is done to facilitate the movement of vehicles on the road, the surface of the earth is also carpeted to make it suitable for human habitation and cultivation. The middle part of the earth is not suitable for living and growing crops. Just as people can rest on the bed, so they can rest on the surface of the earth. And that is why the earth has been compared to a bed, the middle of the earth is not restable. Therefore, the size of the conventional bed was not flat but something else might have been compared with that bed. Moreover, spherical bed is not impossible. Why would it be unreasonable to hold the whole world in a huge spherical bed? The words in the verses such as Bed, Carpet, Spread out, Expanse, etc., the size of the earth has been taken flat! But there is no logic in saying that Bed, Carpet, Spread out, Expanse etc. must be flat.
4. In some cases, different translators have used different words. For example, the different translations of Surah Tawa-Ha 20:53 are noteworthy:
[Qaribullah]: It is He who has made for you the earth as a cradle.
[Yusuf Ali]: He Who has, made for you the earth like a carpet.
[Pickthall]: Who hath appointed the earth as a bed.
[Shakir]: Who made the earth for you an expanse.
So it turns out that 4 translators have used 4 different words and all of them are actually logical, the explanation of which will be discussed before and in the future, Inshallah. There is nothing wrong with accepting the translation that seems most logical. But it is unreasonable to try to prove a book wrong or unscientific by choosing a few words of one's choice from different translations. Because in case of translation, ‘Benefit of Doubt’ has to be given to Quran or any other book. There is no verse in the Qur'an from which one can flatten the shape of the earth with irrefutable reasoning.
