What are 15 minute cities? The 15-minute city envisions a community where essential amenities are within a short walk or bike ride. This envision has been embraced by 16 cities worldwide with the city of Paris becoming a pioneer in this movement. The city has went on to implement over 600 miles of protected bike lanes and green spaces to foster sustainability and combat traffic congestion.
Inspired by the 15-minute city plan in Paris, Cleveland's mayor is pacing towards a plan to reshape the city, emphasizing healthier and more connected living spaces. Despite the positive impacts observed globally, not everyone supports this vision. Influential figures like Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson, particularly in conservative circles, criticize the idea as tyrannical.
Contrary to the opposition's views, the 15-minute city model is about empowerment rather than constraint. It seeks to create communities where accessibility flourishes, local economies thrive, and people enjoy easy access to necessities without lengthy commutes or large carbon footprints.
The concept isn't entirely new, as cities like Paris, Venice, and New York were originally designed for compact accessibility. Today's 15-minute city expands horizons, fostering sustainable, tight-knit neighborhoods where life, work, and leisure coexist within a limited radius.

"Conservatives" yet again opposed to DOING THINGS THE WAY THEY WERE DONE FOR LITERALLY MILLENNIA. 🤦♀️

It's not a concentration camp. Or a gaza style open air prison. You can leave and go to other parts of the country. You can still drive to places in these concepts. It's just a return to the block neighborhoods that places used to have a little over a century ago. It's a bid to make good public policy. Not to cater to cars and whatever industry that lonbied the hardest recently.
Remember a lot of conservatives are funded by the fuel industry. 😂

Until everyone has to carry a smartphone by law wherever they travel, that idea isn't going to work. Also you'd need to be visible to a camera for facial recognition, which still isn't 100% accurate by any means. Plus our incompetent Government wouldn't be able to build such infrastructure without it costing billions and probably never being completed. And for what gain? To totally destroy our economy?
It's absolutely ridiculous.
Now, yes, I can see congestion charges that impose a fee on entering more towns and cities becoming a thing.. even for EVs (they might be greener, but they still add to congestion) and that will encourage more people to use public transport, walk or cycle, but our economy relies on freedom of movement to work (generating money) and for retail/leisure (spending money).

You might but I bet most peopel in your city aren;t. It would be crazy to build a college or zoo or fire station every few miles. A big city would end up with dozens of them. And youlittle local stores - I bet they have way higher prices and far less choice of goods than a large supermarket because a big store is far more efficient thanks to economies of scale.

@@richardgregory3684 You don't have to build a college or zoo every few miles, that's not how it works.
The idea is everything you need, plus some extra amenities, should be within 15 minutes walk/cycle/public transport of where you live. So shops, pharmacies, GPs, bars, restaurants, cinemas etc. The whole point is that you are no longer car dependent, you do not rely on your car to live. You do not need to visit a zoo every week to live. Those will obviously be few and far between, but they should have good public transport links or you can drive to them if need be, but in your day to day life you do not need to rely on a car to shop, work or reach basic amenities.

This videos is so confused. Building Bikeways and increasing Green space is NOT what 15 minute cities are about. Are you moving destinations closer to the home? @@MrEkzoticSo what are the cons?
@@edmunddantes7097 The cons are loss of personal freedom and anonymity, being fined for driving outside of your designated area, being recorded 24/7 with facial recognition to calculate your social credit score. It is being done in Oxford: "People do not realize that residents will only be allowed within 15 minutes of their home address, and violators will be fined. For example, under the new proposals, if any of Oxford’s 150,000 residents drive outside their designated district more than 100 days a year, they could be fined £70. In addition, the government will track and control your every movement through your smartphones & facial recognition technology..." That is just the beginning. They are selling it on "convenience," but it's really about control.
@@MrEkzotic @MrEkzotic 1.Personal freedom-people already live in cities. That's a real thing, not a new concept so not sure what you mean there.
2.Being fined for driving outside designated area- Not a real thing. It hasn't happened once. That was just a thing made up by somebody, try to find just one instance of it actually having happened.
3.Recorded 24/7 w/ facial recognition & SCS- That is a thing in China. Not in any of the other places where this already exists. However, that applies to ALL of China regardless of anything.
4.Violators will be fined and confined- From a completely different bill that regulates traffic of motor vehicles at certain times. People are free to use public transport or non vehicle means of travel.
5. Government tracking-Ever since the Patriot Act that's already been a thing. Has literally nothing to do with 15 minute cities and everything to do with government overreach.
So right now they already have control of power grids, water grids and can cut off control of cell towers. They can close highways, main roads and other city exits. What aspect of a 15 minute city would make it easier?
@@edmunddantes7097 Again, go to the official Oxford City Council website and read about the 15 minute city, it's all there in black and white. And you have to try to understand, sociopathic.authoritarians don't push everything all at once, they do it incrementally. If you study history and psychology, it's very easy to predict what's going to happen.
I knew the Patriot Act would be used to spy on millions of innocent American citizens.
I knew people would be strong armed into taking an experimental drug.
I knew January 6th would be used to smear all Trump voters.
The bureaucrats in government view you as an enemy, not as one they are supposed to serve.
Go read the published documents.
Conservatives know that this will start as a convenient idea and eventually you won't be allowed to leave your 15 minuite area. Just recently we were all lied to with "two weeks to stop the spread"
Exactly! Nothing wrong with the concept or the implementation of the "15 minute city" as long as the government doesn't mandate it. These types of cities already exist in the form of retirement communities however these are private for-profit neighborhoods. There are too many nuances that make up a community and simply can't be swept away with crazy ideas from a handful of elites that love the idea.
@@joelday8439but governments already mandate that you can’t have a 15 minute city. They do this through zoning laws, through construction of freeways and other roads that hinder movement by anything other than cars, by failing to implement frequent affordable public transportation. They dictate you can’t live close to shops and services and your place of work, they force you to own a car because that’s the only way you can access those things, and yet you believe that is freedom? That’s the joke of this, conservatives are making you scared of losing freedom when you’re not free to begin with. You could lose that freedom to travel tomorrow just by government cutting off the supply of gasoline. Why would they need to reinvent the city to do it?
Conservatives don’t oppose it because they fear it’s a risk to your freedom. They oppose it because it makes you free. Free to not own a car, free to not need one. Free to make use of your time for things other than sitting in traffic for an hour or more a day. Free to shop at or operate a neighbourhood business instead of depending on some corporate giant, because you no longer have zoning laws that limit small enterprises. Freedom to live in a choice of housing because there’s no longer limitations on mixed development or medium density. Freedom for your kids, because they’re not dependent on you driving them to school or the mall or to sport across town. Fear of the unknown is what conservatives use to control you, but 15 minute cities are not unknown. They’ve existed for all of human civilisation.
If you don’t want to live in a walkable city, then don’t!
Deal!
Don’t force people!
If you don’t want people to dislike your ideas, then don’t force them!

@@chaseherringtonvictim mentality. No one is forcing you to do anything
As someone who is shaping my next home purchase on walkability, I don't get how anyone can hate on a 15 minute city. I prefer biking to work but the route there is treacherous at points. I like the idea of being able to get groceries, entertainment, and have good public transit options connecting areas that are self-sustained, multi use, and walk friendly. Its insane that something can be a half mile away from you but you have to drive because the sidewalks are inadequate or not there at all due to roads.
"People do not realize that residents will only be allowed within 15 minutes of their home address, and violators will be fined. For example, under the new proposals, if any of Oxford’s 150,000 residents drive outside their designated district more than 100 days a year, they could be fined £70. Living in a city must be a nightmare. Constantly surrounded by subhumans.
The rich have invested hundreds of millions of Pounds / Dollars / Euros in brick and mortar in prime central locations. Their investments depend on the masses commuting to these areas to work and consume. The 15 minute-cities are a threat to their investments hence their opposition to it.
no, 15 minute cities suit the rich the most. they can pay to avoid all the problems forced onto the rest of us. No more searching for customers, government has moved them onto your doorstep and in time segregation will occur meaning corporation's have less costs on wasted goods. they will have a set number of customers so they can plan better.
if i was to design a city for corporations i would design a 15 min city which sacrifices the masses time and friendships to preserve profit
@@elliotwilliams7421what difference does it make in the end? You're still owned by a corpo.
One is 15 minutes away the other could be an hour of travel away. Do you love being reliant on fuel sourced to you by the big oil tycoons?
@brad5426 itm not reliant, it just gives more opportunities in all walks of life. That's the difference. I can get up and go pretty much anywhere at anytime. In 15 min land that is not an option
Will you enjoy being reliant on public transport and shops which are delivered to by vehicles using oil supplied by oil tycoons?
@brad5426 lose your job or want to quit? In 15 min land your work options will be limited unless willing to sacrifice time and money by travelling, difference is you are on someone else timetable and limited to what you can carry
@@elliotwilliams7421 The point of 15 minute cities is individual self-reliance. If you lose your job apply for another. And if you can't do that in your area so be it. After all, it isn't like you already have travel hours at a time for work now. The point is that the 15 minute convenience will be there as opposed to never being in place to begin with, for people. And if we can cut travel time down and reliance on vehicles, why would we oppose it?
My conclusion of your opposition is if you don't want the concept of 15 minute cities then you ultimately want to use a car that drives you everywhere around a country dependant on foreign oil interventions. Albeit you can use it at any given time, however its abundantly clear you can't _live_ without the car. We also have two legs God gave us that we can and should rightfully be allowed to use to get to services in a feasible space. And they can also be used at any given time, if the service infrastructure is in place.
And the thing is you don't need to use transport within that 15 minute radius. Yes this lifestyle is ZERO dependency.
I understand some things will still need to be travelled to via car or public transport, but less is ultimately the better.
It really is about designing cities around people instead of cars. That doesn't mean you can't visit your favorite restaurant across town 🙄

Well these conservatives must be stupid.
I don’t drive, but I’ve lived in Madrid, Spain, Juneau AK, NorCal, and SoCal, as well as traveling to places like Rome and Florence. I must be in a walkable space, either a city center or a small town. Nowadays, I live in downtown San Diego, extremely walkable. Commuting is a waste of time. My bf now lives ten minutes from work; he said he should have thought of that years earlier instead of living in the land of the dead aka suburbs and all the $ that that costs.
I lived in San Diego for 13 years. By the time I left, I was questioning why I needed a car.
My only reasons were to get to other surf spots with my friends and snowboarding.
And Vegas. But barely.

The 15 minute cities are a concept that isn't really thought through.
I mean what about all those people working in the big cities commuting from the Region?
The City is already densly populated and expensive to live in?
Would you want all those commuters to live there as well? Or would you Just cut Them off?
I mean both solutions don't seem practical.
And What about the supply lines? You would still need Roads for Trucks to Support so many people living in a small area.
Rail into and out of cities. Access for delivery trucks is built in. This is how they make nice cities in Europe. It is funny that so many people are afraid of 15 min cities. Please understand - the cities we live in that are choked with traffic and unwalkable were the result of top down control- parking minimums, very restrictive zoning that did not allow offices and housing to be near each over, highways on top of highways.
half of american cities were torn down for the automobile and people who live in the suburbs are loopy crazy and uninged most do not even know there neighbors or never met them think living somewhere for 20 years and not knowing who your neighbors are welcome to america
Yeah no this is dumb. It is a loss of freedom and it is not for everyone. I own land. My family owns land. It takes me 1.5 hours to walk from my backdoor to the end of our families property line. And thats me walking like i walk on patrol in the army. Im not moving slow. It takes me 8 hours to walk the entire property line. So why would i want to move to a 15 minute city? Like that to me is a serious loss of freedom.
Who told you that you have to move you boob?
So do you think the whole population of the planet can live with so much personal space? Anyway why does city planning concern you in the first place?
@zivkovicable yes actually. There is enough land on this planet to where each 4 person family could get about 20 acres of land apiece. Now that includes all land including the desert and polar regions and mountains. So alot of people would die but still that would make even more land for everyone and that is only for everyone to have 4 person families. If you added bigger families to the mix that would give everyone even more land
@@brandondunnegan3890 So no room for agriculture..We all die..
@zivkovicable no room for agriculture? 20 acres is plenty of room for agriculture. You can grow crops plus there's room for animals. Especially pigs or chickens. Also if everyone lives in 10 people homes that gives every home 50 acres of land.
say the truth its jail. but outside. you knoq how the government is. "its to make it easier for people." but they always take that extra step.
How is it a limit of freedom? There’s nothing stopping you from going from one place to another, this is just eliminating the need to drive or have a car to get to places needed by communities, like grocery stores and doctors’ offices. Honestly that sounds great. Cars are expensive, and being able to walk anywhere you need to would be A) good exercise, and B) less expensive than owning a car, which can cost thousands of dollars over a period of years

I find it odd how they yap about restricting movement, I think that the current north american norm is more restrictive, and if the evil government really wanted to trap you there all they need to do is close the highway on ramp.
Some people do things like regularly practise sports, imagine wanting playing hockey and not being able to easily drive to the rink with your kit. Or having to pay to pass through an area to access a stable where you keep your horse. Restricting movement to push a 15-minute concept (as it's suggested to be implemented in the UK) is bad.
It's not restricting, its about creating the opportunity. No one is forcing you to walk if you don't need to or even want to. But not everyone has the desire or need to drive just to go to a store thats 1 mile away. Don't know where you got this "pay to access" thing from either.
The problem is that to accomplish that they have to expropriate massive amounts of people.
It sounds just like urban planning to make life more convienant. Here in Vietnam they are creating areas like that with more shops nearby, parks beaches etc. No you aren't forced to stay there can go to other areas of town if u want to just makes it easier to get what u need also places for kids to play etc. How will they monitor where you go by gps? Never heard of this but I like Asian cities like Bangkok that has the BTS the best urban train system that gets you around the city. In the Inland Empire where I'm from you have to drive everywhere around the city to shop hardly any green spaces as well. The suburban model was like this I enjoy walking outside going to a shop nearby. Where I live now I can a restaurant within fifteen minutes or a shop. Here also they build affordable housing or condos with shops attached as well. I prefer Bangkok way over Los Angeles as you don't need a car to get around the city.
