How to Transfer a Section 8 Voucher to Another State - Voucher Portability
If you're preparing to move to another state, you may wonder if your Section 8 voucher will go with you. With a voucher in hand, you'll be more likely to get affordable, safe housing in your new location. But although these vouchers are marked transferrable, you will need to take a few extra steps to use them in your new home state.
What Are Vouchers?
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development makes safe and sanitary housing affordable for low-income, disabled and elderly citizens under its Housing Choice Voucher program. Renters receive a voucher that they can transfer to any jurisdiction, whether in their state or across the nation. Public housing agencies, or PHAs, administer the program locally.
Your Local Housing Authority
Before you move, you must contact the PHA that issued the section 8 voucher for your current rental arrangement. The PHA will check your records to verify that your voucher is portable. You cannot transfer your voucher if you owe money to the PHA or if you have violated the agency's regulations.
Verifying the New Location
Once your local PHA verifies your portability, it will check for a PHA branch in the area to which you plan to move in the new state. You cannot transfer your voucher to an area where there is no PHA with a rental assistance program. If there is an agency in that jurisdiction, your local PHA will ensure that the qualifying requirements for the location are similar to the requirements for your current residence.
Transferring Your Voucher
Your local housing agency will provide you with the contact information for the branch in the new jurisdiction and tell you how to register for assistance at that location. Because you already have a voucher, it is not necessary for the new office to have you qualify for rental assistance again. Your local PHA will send the new agency your most recent HUD 50058 form (Family Report).
Rental Assistance with a Different PHA Branch
Each Public Housing Agency has different family size and income limits. Depending on the new PHA's policies, it may have to re-examine your information to determine the type of family unit for which you qualify and the amount of money you can receive. The agency may admit you into its housing program and cover your renting expenses if it has enough funds. If not, it will bill your expenses to the former agency, and you will continue to receive housing benefits from that PHA branch.

At what point in the process do you give notice to current landlord, if you have not received your section 8 portable voucher? In addition, do you need to have a place to go, in place before giving notice and requesting your voucher? Is there a process by which you can request a priority status to qualify sooner at the out of state residence due to living in a dangerous, unsafe building with activity and have a disability?

Is there and resources or grants or programs in place that help disable move? I thought I seen where Hud I think has free moving assistance for disabled low income people moving out of state.? Do you know of any that do help with expenses or should I Start a gofund me now before I start the process tommorrow

Hi I have a voucher and I want to transfer out of Colorado. I'm a ubereats driver I'm looking for a state where I still have work and the landlord is not discriminatory with my credit report and is not asking crazy amount of money to move in.

I have had a mobile section 8 voucher since 2002 out of Quincy mass. If I’m disabled is that a problem?? I would love to move to the virgin islands even a cheap one. It is just myself. Quincy MA whereI have lived for the last 22 years is pretty expensive. I would love your help! Or if virgin island is too hard maybe remote village type Alaska.

Oh wow I have one out of Pembroke Mass she will not give me my vouchers worth I've been trying to move due to a caved-in ceiling unrepaired and I ended up grabbing this place quickly with is no repairs it was only supposed to be a short time I've been filling out for apartments for 7 years every time they ask me for my vote to work she will not give it to me or give me the wrong answers or give me an expired paper, it has been misery. This apartment because there's so many reasons why, I just want to live again before it's too late. @@taneshasweatt7721 Low Income Housing Tax Credit property. Falls under the VAWA umbrella but it isn't subsidized. It is a tax credit deal through the IRS. So still federal housing technically. I'm in MN and really want to move to the Upper Peninsula MI because it would be safe and I kind of fell in love with it. I doubt my landlord will help me find a new unit via external transfer, so I need to know how to advocate for it myself. :)
You’ll love this....not. I’ve been getting on all the “waiting lists” that I can. You have to APPLY and be APPROVED just to be on the WL in my city. Well one prop mgr mentioned they take section 8. I asked pretending I didn’t know anything about Sec 8. And she said it’s a 9-10 year wait list! I knew better and that she was trying to push people away. Oh well, I’m sending apps like crazy to the ones who have wait list open.

Greetings, I know this is a 3 month old video, but I currently have a Section 8 voucher here in Lake county IL. and I'm really not having any luck finding a really decent unit that accepts the Section 8 vouchers or some of the rents are just too high!
I did a search and came across Lake county but in FLORIDA!? And I've come across a ton of rentals in FL that are accepting the voucher! So, I'm trying to figure out if it's best that I transfer out of state or keep my Voucher here in IL. and keep looking here? Any suggestions would be helpful!

@@Section8Consulting I've currently been selected for a mainstream voucher after about a year of waiting in the state of Texas. I completed an online intake that was due by 01/28/2022. I really don't know what to expect after the fact, but I'm concerned since my circumstances have got worse if I'm approved for the voucher I'm not mentally fit to drive [relocation]from Nevada to Texas, I'm in emergency housing now, and I wouldn't have [at least I do not currently have] support system in Texas as I've established in Nevada. Hello, I reached the top of the HCV list currently going thru the application process my question is I submitted the Wait list application when I lived in new York state since then I have moved to Florida if I do get the voucher can I transfer it to Florida immediately or would I have to move back to nys for a year then move?

If you have project based housing (Public Housing) it maybe possible as long as the voucher is not attached to the apartment.
