I had this problem a while ago every time I downloaded a certain file, so I gave up. I’m so glad I found this video now and can finally revisit those files I’ve been wanting to use.
OMG!! I don't know how to thank you. My file extension changed from .sas to .pdf and I spent over 2hrs trying to fix it, all to no avail. I came across two other videos that took me down the registry editor path, which didn't work either! Honestly, I was beyond frustrated when I found your video and I decided to give it one last shot before giving up finally. Lo and behold, IT WORKED!! And I didn't even have to restart my system before I noticed that the icon had changed. I'm so grateful to you for this video. Thank you so much! and if you believe in God - May God bless you!!

Every other UA-cam video tells me go to apps and manage your apps there. It's not a bloody app issue, it's a FILE ISSUE. This sir helped me on a level that only a goddess could achieve, I salute you!
Great video! My ".bas" files got converted to Notepad. I read and edit them in Notepad, but I don't want that as the default format. Even IT at my company had not been able to resolve. Drove me crazy! Thanks so much!

I've followed the necessary instructions to complete this, but It didn't work. I get a message stating "This app can't run on your pc" I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, or if this doesn't have an affect on .json files.

I think this is what I was trying to do, managed to open a long list of file types word was allowed to open and not just the standard ones through control panel access; set program to open with certain protocols and I did the same thing in another Word Processor called LibreOffice but I wanted Words full menu so I can change it whenever but I coud only access the short file extensions list and not the full one like LibreOffice allows. So this will help me reset things back the way they were.

not sure if ill get help here, but ill try. i accidentally made all .rif files open with corel painter essentials 7 by having the box checked when i chose to open with corel painter, which isnt a problem but the thumbnails of the files went from the art themselves to just the icon for the app, which is not what i want and i want to switch it back. Does this work with .rif files so i can get my art thumbnails back? or do i have to do something else because I would like the thumbnails back instead of the corel painter icon. thanks edit: also, if i switch the file association to notepad, then go through this process of making the fake file and deleting it, does it go back to using Corel painter? how can i get my thumbnails back? this isn't really a usability issue, i can open the art just fine in corel painter, i just do not want it associated with it so i can maybe get the thumbnails back instead of the app icon in my file list
Well, it doesnt work when i create shortcut of a game it still have that white paper icon and if i choose the correct opening app it will appear in every shortcuts i make so if i make a shortcut of Skyrim game and Fallout 4 it will have opening program for Skyrim. and then if i start fallout 4 it opens Skyrim. I need to know to reset whole shortcuts and make them default to open games with their starting program not the same.

I tried cmd. I tried hkey folder deleting. I tried creating admin profiles with higher clearance. I tried windows settings reset to defaults Nothing. This worked perfect and it makes sense why. Thank you. What doesn’t make sense is they don’t have a “default” option.
