Thank you for telling and recording the story about this amazing lion. If you have or know of additional links to learn more please share. I am so impressed.
Rest In Peace Great King, such a beautiful and majestic Lion. One of the few Lions I have known to go peacefully. Reign eternally in the Lion heavens King Kalamas. You can rest easy now King. 👑🦁
Kalamas, a nomadic male with many "Nyumba Ndogos", is know to traverse great distances across the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. He has once before been seen in the Crater; November 2015 - a place when he face competition with the many resident males. Our team struck lucky this week when Kalamas showed up whilst they were monitoring in the Crater. He sauntered in, mated with the female pictured (LK107 of the Lakes pride), all to the sounds of four contesting males roaring in the distance. Kalamas spent three days hanging out before climbing back out of the Crater and onwards with his travels. We will be looking out for dark maned babies.... Hoping he gave a much needed boost to the Crater Gene pool. R.I.P. King
I didn't know Kalamas very well but I've already had the opportunity to see videos of him more than once...but to see him without a mane is a shock, I thought I saw a Lion castrated by his appearance...he lived a long time as a nomad, I remember seeing him in the crater, which had me a little worried for him but I'm glad he was able to leave in peace and I hope his offspring are doing well. I believe he had a brother who died a long time ago? At least now they are together. Good bye Handsome Kalamas❣️🌹
He lived and died peacefully and was not brutally killed by other lions or humans. He surely had a lions life and managed to live a bachelor for many years.
Did that collar appear at the same time as his mane being shaved off ? Wondering if he had an injury and was looked after then sent back out with the collar to keep track once he was healed. I know nature is allowed to take its course but if he was injured by a snare or other form of trap I believe they may have helped as part of conservation efforts.
Despite being a lone lion he lived a long life and died naturally unlike other lions that died in a battle. RIP beautiful handsome king.

Yes it was amazing that he survived on his own for many years and lived for a full life.
