Jane's Ultimate Mixing Set - now available from Daniel Smith :
Jane: "I have often been asked what colours I recommend for people to buy to get started in watercolour or to upgrade to artist quality watercolours so I created this palette to address that question. It is intended as a universal palette, suitable for any subject. It is also suitable for anyone from a beginner to an experienced artist. It is rather a Goldilocks palette - not so few colours that you have to spend the whole time mixing everything together, nor so many that you lose track of what you have and how to mix them. Too many colours in a painting leads to a lack of colour harmony. My goal was to find single pigment colours that would mix together efficiently so that most colours could be produced by mixing just two pigments. Many people find that if they mix too many pigments, they end up creating 'mud'. With this set, generally two, but at most three colours may be needed to create any hue you want. The palette colours are also useful alone. The set is painted out using Daniel Smith professional watercolours. Alternative brands are given below. The Ultimate Mixing Palette is not intended as a limited palette but as a basic set to work with. You only need to buy 14 tubes of paint. You may wish to buy other colours for convenience, or you may choose to create you own custom-mixes of convenience colours with these original tubes by making up an orange or a purple or some greens if you work with them a lot. You should find you can make pretty much any hue you choose. " More info Find out more

Wonderful ❤ I only just caught this in 2024! Love both of you!
So impressed with Jane Blundell's depth of knowledge of colour. A lot of hard work, time and focus. She is obviously deeply committed to her art form. Thank you for this interview.
Jane Blundell. So smart. So passionate about watercolor.
What an informative presentation thanks! I have just purchased your triad book and looking forward to learning more about colours!
Several years ago I discovered Jane Blundell's website and blog. Soon after I created Blundell's suggested limited palette and purchased the second book featured in this video. To my surprise and delight, I am still discovering different combinations of color. I highly recommend Blundell's book; it's required reading for both the serious watercolorist as well as the weekend hobbyist. Your works will truly be enriched in ways you can't even imagine. Thank you so much for this interview. You are both queens in my book ~ wink wink ~ !
Two very generous QUEENS . Thank you very much !
Thank you for your comment (makes me giggle)
Thank you Birgit! Jane, its wonderful for all of us watercolor students to see you've posted a few videos on youtube!
Thank you :)
Thank you Birgit, this was a treat! It was wonderful to listen you two great artists. I admire methodological, almost scientific people like Jane, and bow to their knowledge! Personally I'd get bored stiff making those diligent charts even though they are beautiful. It's wonderful how different we all are, so we can learn and share, and teach! ❤
Thank you for your comment, personally I like to let intuition guide me, being blessed with people like Jane and all of her knowledge can help to teach us so much :)
I used to use grey (mixed, payne's, or neutral tint) for shadows.. and the typical standby shades (indigo, sepia, etc) for darkening...until I did some pale yellow roses and realized it just wasn't right. It was never right but that vibrant light toned color is like a magnifying glass on how wrong it is. Went back to the basic color theory.. and realized what I was doing wrong. It makes such a difference. Shadows are a de-saturated version of what the color they are on.. not an entirely different one. The next painting I did entirely with complementary darks and I've never gone back. Try it. I love greys.. and if the subject is actually grey it's fabulous... but this short cut is taught way too often.
Thank you so much Birgit for sharing this blogpost - or vlog as it turned out - with Jane Blundell! I agree she is the Queen of Color and so knowledgeable about watercolor! I really enjoyed your conversation, and learned so much! It's a conversation I have to watch again and again, to absorb all the fabulous nuggets of knowledge!
Thank you Eva :)
I live in a humid, tropical climate, and I have the same problem with M Graham watercolors. They get mouldy. I can use them fresh from the tube, but can't leave them in pans. I've also tried Renesans paints which have honey in them. They are lovely paints and not as prone to mould, but they stay runny, they don't dry. So they arent' practical for travel palettes. I haven't tried Senellier, and I won't because I've concluded I need to stay away from paints with honey in them.
I love Jane's website and have learned a lot about colour from her.
Wow ! Jane Blundell really knows her stuff, what an absolute Star !!!!!
A big thank you to both Birgit & Jane for sharing your vast knowledge! So very informative and you’re both such fabulous artists. I’ve been following Jane’s blog & website for a few years now and have found it to be so incredibly helpful when dealing with such a complex medium.
Thank you so very much
If I could give this video podcast a 1,000 “Likes”, I would do it! Absolutely brilliant, informative and fun! Thank you both so very much! ❤️👏🏻❤️👏🏻
Well you have made my day, Thank you 1000 times :)
@@Watercolor101 You're welcome! This is one I have saved because I know I will need to refer back to it over and over again. I especially loved seeing two artists, whom I respect greatly, sit and chat really about watercolour ... all the while educating us. When I started watercolouring, it was Jane's beginners palette that got me going and its one I still have incorporated into my larger palette as I'm a "convenience" type girl. :D Again, thank you so much Birgit for hosting this and please let Jane know how much its appreciated!
@@Via_Von Thank you again, it really is fun to sit down with another artist and have a conversation, and why not pull back curtain and share :)
Thank you so much>. That was very informative & enjoyable to see two great artists chat.
Thank you for your comment ;)
OMG I was not ready for this...but oh yes I’m having a good day today! Thanks so much for this!
love it, I am so happy
This still make me smile and giggle
This is fantastic, Birgit! Thank you so much for sharing it. I'm going to have to watch it many times in order to absorb ALL of the information.
Your welcome, I am so happy that you enjoyed it
Fabulous! Informative! This will definitely be bookmarked. Thank you so much for sharing your vast knowledge Jane, and Birgit for doing this podcast and asking great questions.
Loved this! Don’t know how I missed it! Note that she doesn’t mention Monte Amiate Natural Sienna..which for me is an absolute MUST have...
Thank you - good to know
This was fantastic!!!!
Thank you So very much
This was fabulous interview!
Great Episode... Jane is a Legend.... :)
Janes take on Qor is spot on. As an illustrator I’m less concerned with lightfastness however I’m always concerned with quality, her blog is indispensable!
Great thanks for your your comment
This was time well spent! Is your mixing palette available anywhere? I can't seem to find it.
I love this!!!
Absolutely love Roman Szmal colours!
Well I’m late the party but just watched this for the second time! In one day. I’m a color junky and found this indispensable. Jane didn’t mention the beautiful little studio palette she uses but I think it’s brass. Birgitta, thanks for making this happen!!,Claudia
Thank you so very much for letting us know that you enjoyed the conversation
fantastic podcast! thank you so much! may I ask what are the primary and secondary colours at 1:10:30?
Hi Anna, make sure to contact Jane directly :)
thank you Birgit! :)
My experience of Qor watercolours is at odds with how Ms. Blondell has represented them. I find them as easy to rewet as ordinary watercolours and well- behaved if you get to know them, but they have an exhilarating side that other watercolors don't have..they and DaVinci are my favourites.
Thank you
