Daniel Smith 24-colour half pan metal palette set

- Those who know my work will no doubt have noticed that this set is full of many of my favourite and most recommended colours! The idea, started back in 2016, was to create a half-pan set of 24 colours that would be a useful palette for anyone starting out with watercolours, or moving to Daniel Smith watercolours for the first time. It includes a warm and cool yellow, a warm and cool red, a warm and cool blue, along with an extra yellow, red and blue for more mixing and painting options. There are also a number of wonderful convenience greens, a great range of earth pigments, a dark (Jane's Grey) and a light (Buff Titanium).
I've painted out the full range here, and explained why I chose them. It includes all of my Ultimate Mixing Set colours, except Hansa Yellow Medium - for this set I've used the traditional cool yellow idea and gone with Hansa Yellow Light. This set doesn't showcase all the unique Daniel Smith pigments. It is intended to be more universal rather than personal or quirky, but there is a second empty palette in the box that can be used to add wonderful granulating pigments, convenience purples, Primateks or any others that resonate with you :-)
It is perfectly suited to painting any subject, and allows you to explore all the characteristics of watercolour as it contains pigments that are transparent, opaque, granulating, staining, liftable and/or non granulating.
The brush I used was a Da Vinci Artissimo sable mop, Series 428.

While there are many wonderful watercolour brands available, I've been using Daniel Smith watercolours since 1995, just a couple of years after they were first created. I really enjoy the paints, and working with the company to make great art materials available to everyone.
You’re the only person I’ve come across, other than myself, who would rather continue the colour progression immediately underneath the previous swatch rather than going to the left hand side automatically to start a new line! It makes so much more sense visually to have similar colours adjacent to each other!😊😊😊

Hello Jane, I like new additions of Quinacridone Burnt Orange (which isn t made by W&N), Raw sienna light and Sap Green.
I recently bought Pyrrol Crimson since you like it so much and WOW.... what a stunning, rich color. It is pretty similar to my Perylene maroon by Schmincke but a little redder (less brown). It kinda looks like if you were to mix a little red into Perylene maroon or something. I love it though. Perfect for shadows in red flowers. Or deepening other reds. It’s very rich

Excellent color choices in this set
I was really expecting Moonglow would be included here.. but this set is really very functional and versatile.
Once you get into the secondary colours, personal preferences play a large part. There isn't an orange, as they are so easy to mix with this set. Nor is there a purple for the same reason. If you were to add a convenience purple you'd have the option of a single pigment Carbazole Violet, a soft and granulating Ultramarine Violet, a two pigment mix Imperial Purple, a two pigment mix Cobalt Purple or three pigment mix Moonglow or Shadow Violet - and that's just a start. While I included a lot of convenience greens - the most useful ones I have come across - I've left purples and oranges for others to mix or add.

I’m glad to hear how you and DS came up with the selections. I painted out the full color chart and I was amazed. I was surprised at how useful undersea gr, goethite, and buff titanium have turned out to be. I will keep the colors as is and just refill full pans as I go (except for phthalo green- I’ll keep it in a half pan because I’m intimidated). I might try DS raw sienna PBr7 because raw sienna light mixes very similarly to the yellow ochre.I’m really into shadow violet so I might need to add that eventually.I usually change up composed palettes a fair amount to suit my preferences - this is the first time I don’t feel a need to make adjustments. I looked for the set at Jerry's Artarama, Dick Blick, and Amazon US. None of those 3 had that or any set of 24 Daniel Smith. Where could one find this palette?
Covid-19 has hit many companies, including Daniel Smith, who had to shut down the factory. They are up and running again so in time the palettes will be available again.
Hello Jane, I don’t think I say anything new when I say how much I enjoy your art,tutorials and everything I read on your website,your explanation about all the colors,the swatches helped me so much choosing DS colors, I am kind of a beginner. I would like to ask you about the water container you’ are using. I am looking for one and I saw this one at Blick’s and I remembered that I saw you using it,I didn’t see anybody else. I like it because it has 3 areas, I just wanted to ask is it big enough to hold the necessary amount of water for rinsing,maybe 2x and then the clean water also, are you happy with it? Thank you 😊

Da Vinci Artissimo sable mop, Series 428 is an awesome brush, I also found them to be pricy! You appear to have a lot of control with the one your useing...curious to know which size it is. I checked my stock and have all the colors in DS...less Sap Green and Cobalt Turquoise!

What colors would you add to make a basic pallette for Florals?
Also, I found the 24 pallette at Delta Art Supplies in Edmonton Canada for $165.
@@marshaduggan8853 I have the original 15 color half pan set and it is wonderful for florals as is. I believe all of those colors are included in this set. I added some convenience greens (sap, undersea, and perylene) all of which are also included in this 24 pan set. Hope that helps, this really is just a lovely collection of colors!
A very helpful video. It looks like a great combo of colors. Do the pans shift in the box? it looks like paint would get between the wells. Does the paint stain the mixing areas like it does on plastic palettes?
The pans are held into the box with metal clips so they don't move around. The staining colours, especially the phthalo colours, will tend to stain anything but ceramic, but it is easy enough to clean with a little vegetable oil or use the Masters brush cleaner and conditioner.

Yes this is very similar. I bought mine in Singapore from a shop that may not even exist any more, but Amazon has a few options.

This palette is sold out everywhere. Even though I have a lot of the colors in tubes, I still want it.
The Daniel Smith factory had to close down due to the covid-19 restrictions. While it is now up and running again, it may take a while for the supply chain to click fully into gear.
I am so disappointed that DS changed the hue of its Transparent Pyrrol Orange. It was my most favorite color out of all colors and unique to DS. Any suggestions for a replacement from any other brand? If not, any suggestion for a mix that is close enough in its richness and original hue?
Yes it has been my go-to warm red for ever! The new version is a beautiful orange, but not the unique warm orange-red we were used to. I've rummaged through a few stores to try to find the old tubes to stock up! I Haven't tried adjusting the new version with either crimson or rose to replicate the old version - it may be possible.
The closest I can think of are either Aquarius Pyrrol orange, made with PR73 - it is on the red side of orange, though not quite as red as the DS one was. Or Old Holland Vermilion Extra, made with PR251, which is even closer in hue, but is semi-transparent. Or make the switch to DS Pyrrol Scarlet, which is a lovely classic warm red.

Do you recommend this to start with or the ultimate mixing set?
It depends on your budget and what else you already have. This included a palette, which is useful, and a terrific range of colours. The Ultimate Mixing Set has the 15 colours I use in my courses if you want a more compact set up.

That’s easy - Transparent Pyrrol Orange. It is a stunning mid-orange.

@@peterihnat108 It rather depends what you like to paint. For most people, 24 colours will be all they will need. However there are some wonderful special effects colours that you could consider. These include Lunar Black, which is the only black pigment I use, due to its amazing granulation; Jane's Black Red/Green, which is a convenience black mix; Moonglow, which is a thee pigment shadow purple with interesting separation in the pigments; Transparent Red Oxide, which is a little like Quinacridone Burnt Orange but more granulating - like rust; Piemontite, which is like Indian Red but more graduating and darker with greater variation in colour when used diluted or strong; Green Apatite Genuine, which is a super granulating green for special effects; Serpentine Genuine, which is another lovely granulating grass-like green.
For a convenience mid purple, for anyone else reading this, either the single pigment Carbazole Violet works as a powerful and staining colour, or Imperial Purple, which is a granulating two pigment mix.
I don't suggest you need all of these, but they are some that I enjoy as 'extras'.

I’ve never understood why DS has forced the Perm Alizarin Crimson hue into your palettes. I will NEVER use a 3 pigment color in lieu of a single pigment color. Count me in as a Pyrrol Crimson fan.
It was due to production issues. Pyrrol Crimson can be quite runny and didn't work well in the pans. I prefer single pigments too of course, and suggest people refill with PR264 when they use up the Permanent Alizarin Crimson.

What color did you replace the raw sienna light with?
@Jane Blundell im sorry i just rewatched and noticed you mentioned this. Not sure if it will be useful to you but you could have an extra color if you replaced the quin gold with quin gold deep (not if you have any p049 left) and removed the burnt orange.
@spiritsjoy I find Quinacridone Gold far too useful as a mixing deep yellow to remove it. While I still have the PO49, the Quinacridone Gold hue is also terrific at mixing greens and making interesting yellow earth colours with the earth pigments.
