    I'm American and I love this song because it reminds me of the town I grew up in (Cohasset, MA), which is full of antique shops, Tudor houses, and of course centered around the town green. Which makes sense, because where I'm from most towns and cities spent their first 150 years of existence as English towns and cities. =)

      That’s the rub. There’s nothing sad about this song. It’s a celebration turned into a funeral dirge by this awful rendition.

    Many, many thanks to John Smith (presumably an alias) for some of the funniest, most unbalanced joyless racist waffle I have ever encountered. The man is an absolute genius to find something offensive in a song that is a bit of light-hearted fun. Thank you so much for brightening up my day, although I strongly suspect that your own world is somewhat dark, being that far up your own jet-pipe. You are, Sir, a comic genius in the old English ethos. Congratulations, and long may you write such great comedy. Britain is proud of you.

    Ray Davies wrote many songs that reflected his observations of English life, this was nothing more than a well written piece of social commentry, a nostalgic look at a way of life that was disappearing even by the late 60s. Try listening to the whole album, fabulous!

    Who on Earth could be offended by this? It is a celebration of all that is good, simple, and peaceful about life in a certain Green and Pleasant Land. It is not meant to exclude the non-English, on the contrary it invites the listener to remember similar aspects of their own homeland. Incidentally it most often makes me think of a place 3000 miles across the sea from England, the village green of Cohasset, Massachusetts in America.

      Jacob Hoss It's over-sensitive people like this who cause problems. They want us to welcome everyone and everything, but have no time for the indigenous customs and traits we have had for over 1000 years. And I am afraid that although we have been considered a welcoming and sensitive country in the past, patience is wearing thin. Even with the Scots now.It's so sad and it need not have been so, had we had a sensible policy.

    • @Time2Splitt
      @Time2Splitt 9 років тому +2

      Peter Day "welcome everything" & "but have no time for indigenous culture"
      That's an interesting point I've thought about, but is this reasoning actually true though?
      Do we, really, have no time for our culture because of... the immigrants?
      I see it as: because a huge part of our kingdoms' cultures - the arts & humanities, heritage, galleries, museums, requires a middle class education to understand & thus => 'enjoy'.
      Theatre, literature, music, painting, sculpture, heritage, architecture, museums. A huge part of our our kingdoms' culture. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_of_the_United_Kingdom
      "Enriching Britain", suggests just 8% of the population engage in these aspects of culture.
      www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-31759010
      www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-31993163 - kevin spacey on making the arts for everyone
      www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-31797408 - more info on the "Enriching Britain" article
      I may not be entirely right, but I think that's a more significant reason, that it requires a good education to enjoy.
      NB: I think it's important to reflect & question our own opinions ("no time for indigenous culture" because of...), otherwise our brains create (potentially misrepresnted/false) explanations based on (the understandably) limited knowledge it has as our brains love seeing patterns (rhythms in music, symmetry in aesthetics) & making connections that sounds right even if it may not be.

    Living in the distant colonies I had not heard of Kate until by chance an NZ radio station played this song as a filler.

    • @ftagnc.9927
      @ftagnc.9927 5 років тому +1

      I always see this song as a satire/anti-satire. To begin with, we are exhorted to denigrate and "laugh at" the voice, with the sad, and quite frankly pathetic goals of protecting such quaint and seemingly pointless standards as custard pies and comic book characters. Then, as the narrative unfolds, we see their desperation in the fact of the larger picture, tiny voices making all-too-polite disagreement with faceless skyscrapers and crushing modernity. Too late do we realise that we ought not have been laughing at those who seek to preserve the little things but joining our slim voices with theirs, because the big things are always very eager to swallow us up thoughtlessly.

    • @andrewkeegan1876
      @andrewkeegan1876 2 роки тому

      Perhaps it's because the song is not satirical. Ray Davies said "'The Village Green Preservation Society' is supposed to be about things I want to preserve" and "all the things in the song are things I'd like to see preserved." He also described it as "an affectionate acknowledgement of our culture."

    Strange how people commenting, see this as racist? .... duh! Common people fought for the common land, that was theirs long before the landed gentry saw it as "theirs". The village green is but a small piece of the previous common land. A land that shrunk so much that they could no longer feed their livestock on it.
    Since the 1950's, lots of people wanted to move to England. I wonder why? Then when they get there, they want to change it. Thanks for Ms. Rusby covering a nice song from the Kinks and Mr. Davies.

    A misunderstanding. This song was written in the 60's by a band who were way ahead of their time in identifying changes in English society and ways of life.The song is recognising how the worlds changing fast (and England in the 1960's) and is expressing concern over how to 'deal with it'. It recognises that things such as the rise of capitalism result in lost traditions and ways of life. There is no reference to race whatsoever.

    What a great video for a lovely song, beautifully sung. I only caught a few episodes of Jam and Jerusalem - but it was SO like the tiny Devon village where my mum was born and raised that it was almost uncanny (right down to the characters and situations - the number of times I've spoken to ladies exactly like Dawn French's character...!). But the song stands alone in it's greatness. Kate Rusby is a REALLY gifted lady. A friend of mine has seen her live 3 times and she never disappoints.

    How sad that years after adding this to my liked videos, i return to find that accusations of racism that have now dominated and monopolized the comments section of such a lovely version of a wonderful song. John smith is either a: a troll. b: a cultural Marxist or c: exactly the kind of immigrant that doesn't deserve the freedom or sanctuary of the British nation or people.
    Celebrate our culture, strawberry jam isn't racist, don't engage the troll directly as he doesn't deserve your engagement, be proud to be British, polite, bourgeois, and beautiful.

    I saw Kate yesterday at where I work, and I see her there about once a month or so, and I have always said to myself that I would ask for her autograph, but I chickened out, aannnd, I'm leaving at the end of this month, so I don't know whether I will see her again!! :O
    She's such a lovely person who ALWAYS has a smile and speaks to you! :D

    Well bloody said.
    I was a around when the Kinks brought this out, and, along with such classics as 'Victoria' was deemed a little too 'English' even then. Love this version. Kate Rusby has a beautiful voice, but Ray is........................... Ray...

    One benefit in living in a free and open society like ours is that anyone can stand up and make a comment. Unfortunately that means that narrow minded, thoughtless individuals like John Smith (clearly not his real name, he hides behind that lie also) can spout their complete rubbish. He is entitled to his views and I applaud the fact that reasonable, thinking people with a brain can respond in a polite way. Everyone, please do yourselves a favour and ignore his inflammatory remarks. The sooner he is ignored, the sooner he will cease to gain pleasure from trying, and I emphasise the word 'trying' to upset decent respectable peopleof all races and religions
