- Bivy Camping on a hill.
we started with a hike along some of the Downs link and the North Downs way, taking in the ruins of an old gunpowder mill, St Martha's Church on the hill and some great views across the Surrey Hills.
Rob and myself set out to wild camp on a hill somewhere nice and I think we succeeded as our view in the morning was great.
I used a British Army Bivy and tarp for this Camp

Good Video Mate, I'm originally from Staffordshire / West Midlands area, and i moved to USA 10 years ago, loving the colloquial pieces, which placed a huge smile on my face as here in the U.S they wouldn't understand really what was said or why; like " now we're cooking on gas" ! ( meaning you are making great progress) and not that you are cooking anything. Anyways great to hear the lingo and good job on the video, beautiful area and scenery , thumbs up Dude !
Thanks Bazman.. missed this comment originally, appreciate you watching mate 👍
Looks like a lovely place and some interesting places to visit there. You said the last time you watched Eastenders was 1988 I was only 3 then😂😂 I think we should call Rob gadget camper. Stunning sunset and sunrise also just Cook proper food you can't go wrong with that😁👍
Gorgeous camper may be better?
@@WildCamper Of course 😂😂
One of my first wild campings were in Surrey Hills, slept under the naked sky once without pitching the tent, it was quite warm and quiet, no rain, just amazing place were I was sleeping. I know where it is as I used to come to pretty much 2 different car parks and kind of walked around there and found few places to camp.
Thank you for getting out and bringing us with you. Be safe
my pleasure Dave, glad you enjoyed it.
High, i think, it is the first time that i've seen someone, without me, use the trekking-sticks for a tarp actionly. Kindly Fiete
Great location. I fancy visiting that Church on the hill. Breakfast looked good. You are both very easy to listen to. Well done 👍
Thanks 🙏
Lovely area, not far from where I live (Guildford). Great video and fantastic content, thank you for sharing.
Thanks, I used to live near Chilworth as a child so it was nice to visit again.
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Some of those stones looked like headstones
Its Stonehenge revisited. You two hiked for quite a way. The higher you go up the mountain the more beautiful it becomes looking down on what you've achieved going up. Don't wear yourselves out . Stop and rest a minute or two. That's just beautiful up there on the mountain. Enjoy your lunch ,your walk back. Stay safe.
Can you go inside the church? Sounds like Rob’s meal was a dud too. Go ahead and “Rant” guys. Its good to let it all out. Then you’re back to normal. That was a fun trip. I can imagine that the sky view was a whole lot better than it looked on camera. See you on the next one.
yes, the church is used for Sunday service, but there are no roads to it, people walk up from the villages. I didn't want to go inside filming as it would be disrespectful.
it was great waking up with a view, but I'm ready to winter in the woods now though : )
And Thank you too !!!...!?
: )
Thank you so much...! Have a nice Beautiful Day !!!...And the palaces !!!...
Thank you! You too!
I know where you Guys camped, very busy place! I have camped in the Woods near there, less visible
Minging!! I haven’t heard that word in a while! 😆
Cool tip with the coffee that, wouldn’t have thought to do that myself...
Shame about the mat going down, bloody sleep mats, so hit and miss 🙄
Awesome drone footage in the morning!
Looked a good all round trip, just off now to eat my fish and mash roast 😂 have a good week mate
Ash x
I was inspired by mr Burton outdoors who adds instant coffee to his 3 in 1 .. claiming there’s hardly any coffee in the 3 in 1’s .. so I tried adding a bag to it and it was amazing!
I have a new valve coming from klymit, so Rob was right.. valve changing video is imminent!
I liked this one, I’ve done a few different things over the summer and it’s been great. But I’m about ready to spend winter in the woods 😁
Thanks for watching mate, much appreciated as always and it’s great getting comments from peers
Enjoy your Sunday roast x
Camp Life bushcraft will do mate! And same here regarding the woods! I do like to hide away! 😁
And thanks for the post mate, you legend 😘
Catch ya later mate
Another brilliant 1 Dan :)
Just wanted to let you know I’ve given you a shoutout on my latest Dartmoor video regarding the Leave No Trace # you started I can’t tag anyone yet but thought I’d let you know you’ve had a mention :)
Awesome, thank you!
Nice one Dan, you weren't selling that fish and parsley to me 🤢. Not a fan of rat packs either. Great spot up there
No that fish meal was disappointing to put it mildly!
lovely waking up on a hill with a view though, a nice change from the woods while the weather is warm.
thanks for watching mate.
hope you have a good weekend.
Dan
Rob was hilarious about TV soaps🤣😄👍......my sentiments exactly.
Mat valves- PTFE tape in the threads or use PTFE grease (for greasing tap internals).
Brekkie looked pretty awesome
I know, he cracked me up!
I have spoken with Klymit, new valves are on the way : )
I had fun despite the lack of sleep and crap dinner! Cheers mate , still bevering away on my effort!
you have the chair review too!
it was nice to do something different, a decent walk and a good view, all good stuff. ( and great company obviously ) but I'm looking forward to getting back in the woods now though I think.
looking forward to your version x
Downslink is on my list as I hiked NDW and SDW during lockdown. Now just need to connect the two! I’ve been through the gun powder factory before this is how East India Company took over the world and policed the trading routes around the world taking the gunpowder down the River Wey then off around the world. Amazing history! Loved the bivvy camp this is also on list but I’m on hammock phase at the moment. Thanks for sharing!👍🇬🇧😄
glad you enjoyed it, it wasn't a huge walk but it was a lovely spot to wake up in. I used to live nearby when I was young so I know the area pretty well.
Bivy bags are a weird thing, not always the best sleep tbh but they're pretty stealthy. best used in decent weather!
Good trip guys ! TAKE CARE..
Thanks, you too!
Beautiful scenery with the church and hillside. Dehydrated fish just sounds like a bad idea, but it looks like everything else made up for the bad meal.
it was great to wake up on a hillside, really nice.
Wonderful my friend loved watching your video
Thank you 🤗
Hi young-one, thanks for the tip coffee and coffee mate 3 into one l might use that idea
Go for it, its great!
Loved it, great scenery.
Thanks Ken, its nice to have a change of scenery while the weather is good..
looking forward to wintering in the woods now : )
Great vid Dan. I can even see my house in the thumbnail. Lucky to have all that on my doorstep. When you said you were walking the NDW I assumed you walked from home. Nice touch with the Waitrose bag 😁
Lee Johnstone haha, no mate I’m not that fit! My mum lives in the village so left my car there.
I would like to walk some more of the NDW though, been chatting with Rob about it.
@@CampLifeBushcraft been walking the NDW over the past year got as far as Rochester You and Rob should do some of it, you could even combine it with your pill box sleepover. Plenty between where you were and Dorking.
Nice video dan your videos always makes my day better!
Thanks so much, Glad you like them!
hope you're having a great weekend.
Cool video.Enjoyed it a lot.Nice nature !
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice one Dan & Rob, good to see the dynamic duo back out again! Lol. ;-)
Thanks Colin, it's good to be back out with Rob.
@@CampLifeBushcraft I bet! Does Tink miss your outings?
She has not been herself lately. She was in season then had a phantom pregnancy. She’s getting better now.
But she is a woodland dog really, exposed places with other people and or livestock and she can be a problem.
She is much happier away from people/other dogs etc with a nice warm fire.
Lovely place to end the day there, Dan. Amazing view, especially with the drone too.
That fish meal again,,, aaargh,,, lol
Glad you enjoyed it, it was a nice change from the forest, waking up with a view was great.. the less said about the food the better though : (
Camp Life bushcraft Hahaha, I’ll never mention it again.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend 👋🏼😉
Hahaha, you too mate 😆👍
Great video. Planning a Wildcamp just up the road. Such a beautiful area.
Sounds great, enjoy.
thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it.
Dan
Great views! I did a day walk there a while ago and was really taken by the woodland, open spaces, views and whole area. You picked a good spot for your overnight bivy. Love the video - thanks for sharing. W
I saw your hike around that area, it inspired me to get this camp done as I'd planned on doing this for a year at least!
it was nice waking up with a view!
thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated.

Thanks, really enjoyed the video which I came across while looking for ideas for wild camping near Chilworth. Although I've walked the area a lot I'm a bit of camping newbie and still rather wary. Looks a great spot on the top of the hill. Great drone shots
Thanks David, yeah it’s a lovely spot up there. It’s a weird thing, I generally feel a little nervous up to the point of setting up. Once I’ve committed and it’s dark I’m fine.
If you live local maybe try setting up and relaxing with the plan to head home at say 10pm then if you feel like it stay out.
Take the pressure off yourself.
Good luck.
Dan
Somewhere on my channel I made a video about dealing with the fear of camping alone. That might be of interest to you.
@@CampLifeBushcraft Many thanks, I'll look for that.
at 24 mins a bat wants to be your mate lol
I saw a few bats near nightfall, very cool.
Nice video mate, enjoyed it. Lee...
Thank you, Glad you enjoyed it.

Hello Dan mate :o)
Really enjoyed this one great countryside and views etc. Those store bought freeze dried meals are so often a total disappointment :o( ... you know, making your own is dead easy? You being a chef and all, you'd probably enjoy the process too and although the good dehydrators are not the cheapest items around, with the price of freeze dried foods they soon pay for themselves.
Anyway, thanks for a great vid, on to the next ;o)
its been great over the summer getting out to some different locations. but I'm about ready to spend winter in the woods now.
I have a dehydrator but I'm an inherently lazy person, plus I like trying new things.
I get that Dan, I'm afraid I have an inbuilt aversion to spending too much lol. Trouble is it doesn't seem to get any better with age haha :oD ... but really I was just thinking about content for future videos, you know, you dehydrate one month, then go out and try your creation the next sort of thing but yeah, I get that there's work involved :o)
I'm looking forward to your winter excursions. It will be interesting to see what this winter throws at us and how you cope with whatever conditions prevail. I wish you well with it. Have a great week and here's wishing you a very interesting and successful winter season :o)
Hey Mr CLB, enjoyed this mate, nice and relaxed you could of easy got into that ruin what's the matter with ya?🤣 Fish dehydrated meal... says it all in the ingredients I expect 🤮🤮 Nice set up, I'm off to a woodland on top of a hill tomorrow night... I expect it to be chilly too... was going to bivvy but may take the MSR tent, 3 mile walk all up hill!! Steep too. Great to see you out with Rob again, I do like the banter. Laters
They were covid fences, impenetrable to germaphobes. I spoke with my mum who lives nearby, she said the fence has gone and the place is all clean now.. I was a week early.. could have slept in there.
hope your camp was a success, I'll await the video x
@@CampLifeBushcraft Camping now!!
Cool, enjoy your plastic bottle of wine!
Keep warm x
@@CampLifeBushcraft 🤣😂 plastic bottle of wine consumed... now on the plastic bottle of JD 👍
I need the coordinates for that place you set upol
How's the Bessport 1 man tent doing? Planning on getting one for a 5 day hike of the West Highland way in May
its doing good, last time I used it was on Dartmoor.. it held up to some reasonable wind. its main downfall is the inner pitch first, which in the rain is a problem.. take a micro towel with you in case.
@@CampLifeBushcraft cheers, yeah watched the vid, is it possible to pitch the outer 1st ? Made my mind up getting one.
No, it’s inner first only I’m afraid.
what was the trail you went on because me and my mates are planning to go up to north downs?
We went up the downs link from Chilworth village. Through the gunpowder mill.
Is there much camping that can be done in the surrey hills ? Its not far from me 😁
loads, look at the map and go for walks, there are lots of places tucked away.
Is there campsite by boxhill
Lovely place to camp, shame about all the people.
I couldn't believe how busy it was, that view point where we ate was unreal, had some folks blackberry picking around us at one point.
I guess that the nature of not being hidden in the woods : )
Just got back from Far North Qld, yes, I am allowed to travel within my own state...😏. We went to Cape Tribulation Beach, famous for being one of the most northerly beaches in Queensland where you can drive to in a standard car. We were 2 of the 6 people on the entire beach😯😎👍!
What tarp is that?
I've looked through my buying history and I can't find it.. but it was cheap amazon job.. it was under £20 if memory serves
For ham get spam
haha!
Hi Dan. Don't know if you've seen another comment asking if u could do a vid on waterproofing. Got a tent know for leaking and a well know brand of waterproof solution to spray on. Being new to all this don't want to ruin it 😀. Also got a cheap Scandinavian knife could u do a vid on how to maintain our tools knife and axes and so on and on and on lol thanks 😀
