Now I listen to all their songs. Brian Wilson is a genius and the harmonies are top tier. God Only Know is another fantastic song off Pet Sounds. A different type of love song. My teen years in the California Surfin' craze. The Monkees were formed for their tv show not the Beach Boys. 3 Wilson Brothers, cousin Mile Love and a neighbor. Brian Wilson wrote most of the songs, Mike and Carl Wilson wrote some too. Try, Surfin' USA. 409, Good Vibrations, God only Knows, Fun, Fun, Fun are some of their huge hits.

The word "genius" gets tossed around a lot, but when in a musical context, "genius" is used to describe Brian Wilson more than any other artist.
A then 23 years old guy writing and singing lyrics describing love of 12 years' old....or waiting the magic age of 18 - 21. The backing was played by a studio ensemble called The Wrecking Crew. It included e.g guitarists Tommy Tedesco, jazz guitarist Barney Kessel, guitarist Glenn Campbell before his solo career (Wichita Lineman for example), drummer Hal Blaine who later played for The Carpenters and Seals & Crofts among others, multi-instrumentalist Larry Knechtel who later on played bass for The Bread, and is famous for the piano part in "Bridge Over Troubled Water". The group wasn't too happy about the composer/producer/bassist Brian Wilson's idea as they did only the vocal parts on the whole album "Pet Sounds". The closest more modern example would be Toto, the members of it playing on countless recordings of the 70's and 80's.
This song made The Beatles shake in their boots…that speaks volumes as far as the beauty, virtuosity and sheer innovation for the time! It made all other artists work harder!

You make a very good point about the usage of classic songs to sell product diminishing the integrity of their creation. I've lost count of the number of TV adverts for different products that use this classic (in the UK). With a lot of big artists selling their the rights to their back catalogue to bump up their pensions this will become more prevalent....Listen out for snippets of great compositions by Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Paul Simon and more accompanying enticing pizza adverts before too long.

Fun Fun Fun is pure fun, esp. the Shlyrics! Also "I Get Around", and "Darlin'" is not often mentioned but one of my favorites.
