Carol Kaye-only female member of the wrecking crew, plays electric bass, even though you see her in one photo playing a guitar. She is a legend.
If I'm not mistaken she came up with the baseline for "Good Vibrations"
@@danielrockmyer949 Can't blame her.
@@glennelfmann3143 Brian Wilson specifically came up with the bass line for her to play.
Carol Kaye was great, one of the best bass session musicians at that time in LA. Just the Wrecking Crew !!
The Wrecking Crew + Beach Boys Harmonies + the song writing of Brian Wilson = Beautiful Music. Great reaction. RIP Hal Blaine.👍
Carol Kaye actually started as jazz guitarist, played both guitar (but mostly bass) on over 10,000 songs/movies scores/tv scores, including guitar on La Bamba. Amazing presence. A full documentary on music unto herself.
Thanks for GETTING it....this song is a masterpiece. I read that the Beatles, after listening to Pet Sounds the first time, were completely dazzled by the album. They GOT it. Brian Wilson was a genius; Glen Campbell said Brian was the best there ever was in the studio. Even the Wrecking Crew GOT it. When I see people on reacting.....and who don't get it, I am sad for them. Anyway, thanks for reminding me how great it is.
i still hum the tune today and i graduated from high school in 1969. interesting to realize the tremendous prep and background behind these classic songs. great reaction.
That’s a baritone sax hitting those low notes. Beautiful rendition of a beautiful song. Thanks for bringing it to us. We are better for having heard it. Wow! At least top 5 Beach Boys song.
I don’t know what to say here. Except to say this is a masterpiece. Pure and simple.
Brian Williams is a brilliant composer. It’s not classical music. But he’s a modern composer. Thanks for posting this rendition.
I wish more people requested Beach Boys
These guys knew how to reach the imaginations of young men through song. Be it surfing, hotrods, young love, or any of the urges that are common to young men, the Beach Boys brought it to the surface in every song they recorded.
As for my favorites, I always liked their songs about cars. Little Deuce Coupe gives one an idea of what it's like to blast off in a car with an engine too powerful for its chassis.
From one of the most incredible albums, "Pet Sounds", from 1966, this was the opening track. Every song on this album a masterpiece.
Lyrically this love song has a perfect word combination to draw your full attention. The harp like 12 stringed mando-guitar placed perfectly in the start... magic. The horn section so groovy.
This extended version like a dream come true. Glad you were groovin Harri. Great reaction. Thanks Harri and JK Clark. 👏 👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Thank you Hari for keeping all this musical magic alive in our hearts and minds.
No one could weave voices and music like Brian Wilson. It was, and has been, like no other signature musical style ever created. He was the true genius behind the Beach Boys' sound.
What a great version of this song!! It makes me appreciate the musical instruments in the song.
If you like Chicago ,they recorded a song with the beach boys in the 70's,called wishing you were here.i think you would love it harri.
Love the use of the accordions.
Pretty good song, heh heh Harri...... pure perfetion.....
Hari, do yourself a huge favor on your time, find the documentary called The Wrecking Crew....an ensemble of California Studio Musicians that not only translated what Brian Wilson heard in his head, but backed up huge artists throughout decades of music, Glenn Campbell, most recognized from the crew., But Carol Kaye was a ground breaking artist!! Hope you watch it. ✌️
Thank you Harri for covering this iconic song.
Brian Wilson was a genius! Great reaction Harri!
Wrecking Crew, Wall of Sound, Beach Boys 🔥
The Wrecking Crew, Funk Brothers, and Swampers all created magic across the radio waves.
I love the Pet Sounds boxed set. You get alternate takes (Brian Wilson doing a version of 'God Only Knows'), instrumental-only, vocal-only - it allows you to appreciate Brian's genius and the huge accomplishments of this album. And kudos to the Wrecking Crew.
There’s lots of different recordings/takes of Good Vibrations too, amazing! The other song is God Only Knows, all three are fantastic!
Incredible.
Reminds me of all the great Motown musicians who starred in the background.
The Beetles really admired the Beach Boys especially their harmonies
Remarkable!
Carol Kaye the Goddess of the bass. Soooooo talented.
¡There's one I remember from Highschool! (Thanks, Harri!!!)
I am only 51 today but the beach boys have always been one of my favorite bands ever! My parents raised us in an incredibly musical home since birth and My wife gave tickets a few years ago to one of their last tours I know of and filled that bucket list item. Smiled so much my face hurt. So very true Mary.
I agree with you 💯 Harri on this song! I say #1 for them because this was PART of an overall masterpiece, even McCartney (and reportedly other English acts at the time) thought the album was a beautiful record. Of course, this song can stand on its own merit! ✌🏼🙂😊
How Cool! I mean, you're aware of the instruments in the song, but to hear them isolated like this is really special. Thank you!
Kids out there, don't ever wish you were older, it isn't so great. There is always something that needs to get done, bills to worry about paying, and you never have the time off to have fun like when we were younger, and then there's the graying hair and aching body when the weather changes. Enjoy every minute of your life and the music. I don't think this is their greatest song Harry but it is one of their upper tier songs. I grew up with my Mom playing the Beach Boys and the Bee Gees a lot of the time for me to learn to dance to and to just enjoy.
This song always brings so many feelings with it... longing, love, sadness, happiness, freedom, youth. Strongly recommend if you have not yet watched the documentary The Wrecking Crew, to do so. What an amazing group of talented people, including Glen Campbell (which I never realized until I watched it).
I really love the Beach Boys and I wish this sound had become a bigger thing among other artists. 50s-60s California beach vibe is a sound I think everyone could love
Even the triangle gives you chills
The wrecking crew couldn't wait for the "boy genius" to show up for the sessions. They loved what he brought to the studio for them to work on. Carol Kaye said that Brian would have everything mapped out in his head and would even show them the parts he wanted played.
My Favorite from the BB is All Summer long just one of their tunes but it has a special spot for me because of the time it came out.
Good Vibrations is a must listen
Love love love… the vocals, harmony, instrumental; brilliant!
Classic song, single, from a classic album.
The album Pet Sounds led the Beatles to create Sgt Pepper, but Rubber Soul, led Brian to create Pet Sounds.
Wrecking Crew laying down trax
God only knows, Do it again, and so many more.
oh wow this was so so good :))) Thank you for sharing this !! Cheers !
Thank you Harri for an outstanding reaction to one of my favorite Beach Boys songs. The extended version ia amazing!
Hi harry, great choice again. I think you guys would like son by chicago, wishing you were here, with theoriginal beachbody singing in the background. Except for Brian of course, but it still sounds great.
Sorry I meant beach boys, have carpal tunnel.
Pet Sounds, the album this was on is one of the top albums of all time.
J.K. Clarke - This was a terrific submission, and I have never heard of this extended version. Beautiful vocals by all. Splendid review, Harri.
Glad you enjoyed it Dave, and yes, Harri was splendid!
This is a great version of this amazing song. Thank you Harri and JB Clark. 🌺✌️
Off the DVD-Audio version of Pet Sounds. There is so much information in the "extras" section about the making of this album. Plus, the album can be listened to in original mono, or stereo or in 5.1 surround sound. I haven't watched/listened to it in a few years but I need to again real soon.
I've heard every Beach Boys song a thousand times. WOULDN'T IT BE NICE is their best based on lyrics, vocals, and musicianship. A more mature production just before Brian went off the deep end.
Might be the best song of the sixties.
WIBN was the A-side with God Only Knows as the B-side. Certainly one of the best 45's ever. As great as WIBN is, I would nominate GOK as their best song. Brian Wilson must rank as one of the best melody writers ever, yeah a true genius. So fortunate to have him in our lifetime.
In an interview Paul McCartney referred to those bass tones as well and said them to be bass scale harmonicas. Beatles used them on "Sgt. Pepper's...." album as well, taking the idea from "Pet Sounds" album.
There is a documentary done on The Wrecking Crew, of the same name from 2008. It also tells how the group eventually disbanded. The bands demanded contracts allowing themselves to perform since they were also composing the songs by then and performing them live. According to it Crosby, Stills & Nash was one of the first groups specifically putting it to the contract.
Genius....those harmonies largely by the brothers and a cousin.
Brian was a musical savant, but he had a lot of help with arranging and musicians. Some of the best musicians by the evidence of this song, called the Wrecking Crew. There is a documentary here on UA-cam about them, check it out.
That weird sound you hear is a hatmonica type that the wrecking crew guy played. Forget his name. How Brian Wilson came up with these sounds is amazing.
Great review! My son and daughter-in-law used this for their first dance song at their wedding.
This is a "demo" of how Brian put together "snippets" to create a new recording technic. He had the sound in his head and had to create a way to put it together.
pet sounds is often referred to by fellow musicians as their sgt. peppers masterpiece
Wouldn't It Be Nice is my favorite followed by Warmth Of The Sun.
"The very beginning of the songlyric intro'-at first, sounds like a music'box Ice'cream truck, which in opinion always has a classical quality to my ears. . .4--26--2023;'
It was a big deal here in San Diego when they visited the zoo for their photo op, I believe they were kicked out for misbehaving 😂
Think of this as a documentary or illustration. It is not meant to be an "improvement" or "remix". Some commenters are lamenting that the original version is not being played. They miss the point that this version was created to highlight the contribution of The Wrecking Crew. I don't think it was created to denigrate The Beach Boys.
Bingo Flamenco!
The Beach Boys’ vinyl album Pet Sounds is now a collectible! My father passed away recently & we found a sealed of the Pet Sounds album. According to my dad’s writings, his folk trio performed at the L.A. County Fair with other artists ie., The Beach Boys!⛱️ 🎡🎢 🎠🐟 The rest is rock history!! 🌊☀️
Hi Debra, was your dad's trio called "The New Folk Trio"?
@@musicvox4946 The Shenandoah Trio
Thank you for doing this Harri, mate! You did great!!
Harri, the genius behind this extended version is a man named John Perrone. He went by mosogam on youtube. His forte was Motown, but he worked his editing magic on hundreds of songs.Unfortunately, he died of Covid in April of 2020.
I grew up with The Beach Boy's music & had a lot of their records. Brian Wilson was the genius songwriter of the group. They span many decades but I love their early stuff from the 60's-70's. Their music conveys such happy innocent days of youth (surfing, cars, romance). They had tons of hits such as "Surfin' U.S.A.", "Surfin' Safari", "I Get Around", "California Girls", "Help Me, Rhonda", "Barbara Ann", "Fun Fun Fun", "Little Deuce Coupe", "In My Room" etc.
You should react to the beach boys smile version of wind chimes
Harri you should do a reaction to the Wrecking Crew film
I prefer Good Vibrations, but that’s only taste. This is a great song.
Whenever a person asks a question, I usually ask Google it. As for what's the Beach Boys best song, it had the word God Only Knows. The song you played from them is 4th. What are their second and third best songs? The second is Good Vibrations, and the third is Surf's Up. Have yourself a wonderful morning, Harry. B'bye.
I really enjoy your videos. Thank you! Can you do a reaction to "Birdland" played by Maynard Ferguson? You won't be disappointed!!
Hal Blaine, Carol Kaye !!!
Also Tommy Tedesco, great guitarist. RIP
@@cindyp1033 and Larry Knechtel.
this song is used on sky mobile advert
Anyone who likes this should go out and immediately try to find the Pet Sounds Box set.
As much as I absolutely hate these types of extended songs, this is a brilliant song from a brilliant album, one of my all-time favorites!
This is a wonderful example of the cosmic Law of octaves
The intention of the doing will always become the exact opposite of the intended doing
The intention of Brian was to break the repetitive patterns found in music around sex based on sex
The actual musical intention (its math's not opinion its a formula and therefore you can create the exact opposite to the formula(Led Zeppelin did this with Stairway to heaven, they broke the don't speed up rule, and speeded up)) was to cause cortex Failure on LSD for a very specific kind of person
So to then turn it into a repeating pattern is the cosmic law of Octaves of DOING
everything is a spectrum "Better" does not exist,
you just pretend it does and never see the other aspect of the spectrum
Or the other outcome of your doing
Its like who the hell listens to James brown "the funky drummer" anymore in its birth state ?
but you hear the Funky drummer all the time
And what was a very fluid drum, becomes an singular moment of populism
wouldnt it be nice if people had enough talent to write their songs ?
Phil Specters Wall of Sound was so innovative, but cruel to Brian.
Sorry, but I'm not keen on this one. The song wasn't intended to be extended, it destroys the perfect balance of the original. It was recorded as it was recorded for a reason. Brian Wilson oversaw everything and after all, it was the first song on "Pet Sounds" which demonstrates its importance.
Agree, I love the song, but I hate the fact that it is extended.
I initially posted this as a new comment, but thought since I couldn't figure a way out to private message HarriB, I'd post as reply to someone who might agree --
Well, I'm only 1:30 in, but "Wouldn't It Be Nice" if we had the landmark Beach Boy vocals in where they're supposed to be?!? - So, Harri-B, let me get this right - you have to IGNORE the creative force & landmark BB vocals, in order to pay tribute to the studio musicians hired by Brian Wilson to record his song? - As GREAT as all those musicians were - THAT seems counterproductive - & 5 minutes in, it DON'T make any more sense the way this was promoted as "BEACH BOYS Wouldn't it be nice Reaction" - Not, a "wrecking crew/studio musicians REACTION to a Beach Boy song" - & UNBELIEVABLE, at 5:50 mark you did it AGAIN - Instrumentals, no vocals. That's it, I'm tapping out - VERY disappointing presentation & reaction -- & I AM a fan, HarriB - but this seems sort of, if not false, at least ill-thought out advertising your product. PS - if I knew how to private message you, I would have - but being of that Boomer generation that saw these guys and a lot of the others of that era live, I'm clueless. So, here I am "replying" to Paul Dover - But hope you see it, HarriB - what do you think, Paul?
@@rogerbianchini2982 I find it remarkably ironic the extent some people are willing to go to flaunt their closed-mindedness. Remarkable in how willing they are to smear the good works of others in the process, and ironic they are actually too closed-minded to recognize their closed-mindedness.
Have you read all those books cover-to-cover (back to front)?
I dunno Harry, seems like a sacrilege to take a perfect pop song and tear it up just because and then pretend like its the same song it was before and then to excuse the vandalism as a tribute afterward.
Just outtakes and raw tracks as they appeared on a BB box set. No theft here.
I guess I may be the only one in this group, but I never liked The Beach Boys when I was growing up…all their songs sounded the same to me. I will leave it at that.
too bad you never grew up, at least musically
Great stuff
