A day in the life of a lifeguard can be pretty intense. They have to be hyper-vigilant and focused because their jobs are literally life-saving. As you can imagine, lifeguards have strict rules they follow to keep them in shape and ready to come to the rescue. They also have some hacks and tricks of the trade that they swear by. For instance, you won’t see a female lifeguard with a bun full of wet hair. They’ve shared horror stories about major hair loss from putting up wet hair. They also have beauty regimens that keep their skin soft and moisturized while working in the chlorine and saltwater all day. If you look in a lifeguard’s bag, chances are you’ll find this one key item they don’t leave home without. We’re talking about Vaseline. It’s crucial for preventing chafing from wearing a swimsuit all day.
Lifeguards are expected to be in top physical shape. Endurance, stamina, and strength are crucial for a lifeguard on a rescue mission. A lifeguard’s workout routine is vigorous and intense. But it has to be so they can be our water heroes. Another absolute must-have for lifeguards is a good pair of sunglasses. In fact, sun protection is paramount during a lifeguard’s shift. And hydration is essential. Some lifeguards drink over a gallon of water a day. In addition to water safety and accident prevention, lifeguards must know first aid and CPR. They have to be trained to recognize heat exhaustion and swimmers in distress. These are just a few of the strict rules female lifeguards have to follow on the job.

Do all these rules REALLY just apply for women?? Because I feel like washing off chlorine and salt water is important for men lifeguards to.
Lugøønx i was thinking that same thing. I don’t think lifeguards are predominately woman or men.
definitely not, as a lifeguard myself, EVERYONE applies these rules to themselves. Personally, my care routine is a bit different but pretty similar.
The Title should be changed to: 17 Strict Rules Lifeguards Must Follow At All Times
These rules do apply to men as well, but the video was made to point out specific rules for women life guards as an example the hair rules
And the lotion and rose water
Most of these aren’t rules they’re just tips and preferences.
no..
So true
Yeah
Molly ㄹㅎㅎ
well i am a lifegaurd and these are true
i’m a lifeguard and most of these aren’t true. these are more like suggestions and not requirements.
Oof
same here I’m a lifeguard in Australia and most of these I can tell aren’t true.
I watch a crap ton of Bondi rescue so I know what you mean
ik i watched this and was super confused lmao
Emma Baumgartner Same here! I’m a half day lifeguard and to be able to be a lifeguard you need to be at least 16 years old.
I'm a lifeguard and you actually have to be able to swim 300 yards, breaststroke or freestyle, and tread water for 15 minutes, 10 without hands, and 10 without legs. And that's just for pool lifeguards, they've started to make it MUCH more taxing on every lifeguard, ESPEATLY beach lifeguards, and it's pretty obvious and clear as to why that is.
:o
that depends on ur state
Shaylyn Malone I dont know where you work but ive never had to do that at any of the pools I’ve worked for...
I'm trainging to be a beach guard in California and just to tryout to pass, you need to swim 1000 yards in under 20 min, and do a 200 yard run, 400 yard swim, 200 yard run combo. It's intense
I’m a pool life guard in PA and it’s 300 meters 2 min trending water no hands and getting a 10lbs brick off 10ft. 3 day training/ written test and boom your certified
As a professional lifeguard, trained by the Red Cross, YMCA, and Jeff Ellis and Assoc. (people who train Disney and Kings Island), I can tell you this is true. However, they're focusing more on beach guards. I've literally never used vasoline or tried to workout on breaks, because I work at 3 different pools and we have inservices every single week. It really is just the opinion of one beach lifeguard in FL
Wow
Uuuuu
Worked at a place that have a stand alone lazy river. That attraction is just quiet amd all we can do is to actually workout since we can't bring our phones. I do sneak a book and a colouring book while working before. Pretty alright. I guess.
jeff ellis 💪🏽💪🏽
My mum work at the berwick ymca in Pennsylvania but she's not a lifeguards but in fitness but my older brother of is 13 can do training at 14 for 15 and I can work at gymnastics at 15
Their video should’ve mentioned how parents need to watch their kids. When I worked at a public pool most incidences were from parents not watching their kids or thinking their flailing around in the water is just playing. Parents, please watch your kids and don’t turn your back on them or expect lifeguards to parent them. Yes we will but we get pissed when we have to save a kid when their parent is within 5 feet of them and is just talking to their friend.
That's an understatement. 99% of my weekly rescues or preventions are because parents aren't paying attention to their young ones or because of stupid teenagers, even though I'm a teenager.
Haha yes thats true !! And me is when they say watch my kid for me while i go to the bathroom 🙄 like yes imma only watch youre kid so the other 50 peoples ish can drown. 😂
I agree but they cant do much if they dont have a swimsuit on if they are in a swimming pool
Luna Rocks If a parent really cared for their child they would jump In no matter what my mom would
@@Sarawarawara- my mum has shoulder problems, she could die
i, myself, am i female lifeguard. i work for a pool thats open year round and out of the year ive worked at the establishment, ive only made 3 saves.
the american red cross test that i had, we had to do 300yds of breaststroke/freestyle non stop, grab a brick from 7ft and bring it back under 1min 15sec, and tread water w no hands for 2 min
i make small talk all the time (we just cant look at them) and i personally just wear a moisturizer.
i also do not have vasaline in my bag but i have chap stick
i also def not in shape tbh. but i can still make saves if i need to.
luckily, i have a building which gives us a lot of ac and breaks.
Wow
Luna Rocks ahaha thanks!! those are just my tips and tricks 😂😂
Its alot do
I’m almost 15 and will be taking the Red Cross certification before this summer when my pool opens. Of the 14 years I’ve been at the pool, I’ve only seen a handful of saves, as it’s a family oriented pool where parents are keeping track of their kids.
You shouldn't only wear a moisturizer. You should also wear a swimsuit.
Here’s a story about a female lifeguard:
My friend, her little brother, me and my little sister were at our local country club in the pool, and we were there for about 30 minutes so far swimming. Her little brother started having difficulty in the deep end, and he was screaming and couldn’t get himself up above the water. I look over at the lifeguard, and it appeared that she had snuck her phone on duty and was not paying any attention to him. She was on her phone. I had to swim all the way across the pool to save him. The lifeguard still had no idea what was happening. I’m possibly the reason he is still alive today. It is absolutely disgusting what she did.
dang she sould have been fired. I have had to remove guards from stand for having phones or chewing gum. I hate it when they do this, most of them don't understand how vital their role is to the lives of people at their parks
@@paigeleighbarrow2645 exactly!
@@paigeleighbarrow2645 chewing gum?
I was a lifeguard when I was a teenager I took it very seriously we could be the deference between life and death
@@MegaSwiming exactly, i don't know why that life guard girl was like that
“All female lifeguards MUST drink hecca water during their shifts”
Well, this was definitely stolen from Allure.
eGADs I was thinking the same thing!
Totally
Definitely
Allure could of stolen it from TheTalko
Yeah
I’m addicted to bondi rescue
Jinhit Is your bighit SAME
Omg ur a kpop Stan lol
This is the worst TheTalko video in a while. I was a lifeguard for 3 years, and none of these rules are a thing. Pool lifeguarding is super chill and you barely make rescues at some pools. The skin stuff is all ripped off from an Allure video. Do better, thetalko.
ikr
exactly, I've lifeguarded for 2 months now and never had to save anyone
Ohhh I thought thus was real
All I can think of at 3:15 is on keeping up with the Kardashians when she says "my earring my diamond earrings are gone"
People are dying! 😂
Don’t copy from other UA-cam channels without acknowledging them
0:22 she’s from a show called Bondi rescue
BANG BANG I know Juliana aka Jules I love Bondi Rescue
I’m from Bondi
As a female lifeguard, I had similar training. It included a 10 lbs brick test under 2 minutes from a 12 foot deep pool, treading water for 3 minutes with no arms, swimming the 500m daily, passing every rescue, and some hard spinal rescues. You gotta be in shape
I don't think I can do that now. I was able to do it when I was younger.
I’m a lifeguard myself and none of this is true. Everyone needs to follow the same rules. Yes we do intensive training it it’s not around 100 hours. It’s more like 80 hours. but also every you have to train to keep fitness up. And we don’t spend all day guarding the beach or pool. Now I come from Australia and our age limit for lifeguards is 13.
Lucus Poocus. Bondi beach?
WTF? 13? Are you joking?
1:25 I am a Lifeguard and you are allowed to talk to guest but you can’t look at them you can look at the water and talk.
Huh?
7:31 I believe this woman works(ed) on Bondi beach. There is a UA-cam channel named Bondirescue.
Yeah Juliana aka Jules
I’m a lifeguard and most of these “required” things aren’t true

1: *Be happy*
2: *Be sympathetic*
3: *Be enthusiastic*

y'all im a lifeguard and a fair amount of these are more personal preference
Me realizing my pool life guards don’t follow any of these rules... 😳
wait what
I’m a lifeguard and we had to swim 600 meters without stopping. Not 100
Depends on your area i think, if you trained for a specific beach too, it could be that
I love how they have Americans and they’re is jewel from bondi beach
Hello amazing person scrolling through comments😃
hello there
why hello again
Hi

Lady : *Do not wear jewelry*
That life guard with her jewelry :
You guys literally copied Britney’s video!😡🤔 and most of those are just suggestions! You copied Britney’s daily routine and hers is not the same for everyone! 😐
Ikr!
Don’t forget Bondi beach too
This doesn’t just apply to woman
The requirements for the Red Cross is 600m swim and 2 minutes tread. Don’t know where they got these number from
The main reason i watched this bc i saw bondi rescue jules i have been watching them for so long!!!
I saw a Bondi lifeguard board 👀
And I saw a my brother. Maxi
I was a lifeguard for several years at my home town pool and I can say that most of these are true on the pool side.
Agree 110% pool life-guard requirements and strict rules for fitness, no casual talk and on your game ready for shift work. Thank you for highlighting the realness to being a life-guard xXx
Been watching Bondi for weeks now and know how vigorous their routines are but seeing this has me appreciate them even more now!! Way to go lifeguards!!😊💗💗💗💗
if you watch bondi beach then you will know that for one they wear t shirts and shorts and the girls wear just a t shirt with there swimsuit under, they can have conversations with other citizens so long someone is patroling the beach, they do put moisturizer on so that they dont get salt lumps underneath the skin and they can pull parks and enjoy themselves.
3:20 my diamond earring
I was a lifeguard at my local waterpark for 3 years and these aren’t musts. They are recommended and not only for just women. Men too. But most rescues you experience or witness are because of a lack of adult supervision. I can’t tell you how many children and even teenagers I have saved because their parents weren’t nearby or didn’t know how to swim especially if it was at the bottom of a slide with our deepest pool.
Right so this whole video is just stolen videos from other UA-cam channels and tv shows, great.
Right, so there are like 100 comments saying the exact same thing, great.
Everybody watching this video: oh sunscreen doesn't seem that bad tbh
ME watching this video: so I can never be a lifeguard then unless I want to practically explode.
🤣🤣
The moment they said no Jewellery I thought of Kim k losing her Dimond earring🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃
As a lifeguard trained by the Royal Canadian Lifesaving society I can truly say these “rules” are totally false. It’s not just female guards that follow these “mandatory” lifeguard rules; basic personal care is a must, lifeguarding is a demanding job you have people lives in your hands everyday and are constantly in tough conditions. Also, at least in Canada our standards to become a lifeguard are much more rigorous, after all this is a not a job you want to squeak through to get certified, you can get sued or worse for failure to maintain standard of care. Maybe next time don’t take the opinions of one specific guard and apply them in a gender stereotyped manor to a profession you obviously didn’t research enough of.
1:13 wait so I'm qualified as a lifeguard now 🤣🤣🤣
This is amazing
I was once drowning in the beach and the lifeguard didn’t see I thought I was going to die but my older cousin saved me
I remember training and certification like it was yesterday. My group's instructor had a hands on approach to hypothermia by having us experience the beginning stages ourselves while running rescue drills. Ah memories....
And those scouts weren’t actually Boy Scouts they were cub scouts
Also what about Girl Scouts?
It amazes me what people think is "hard training"
WHERES ME BONDI MATESSSS?!
America:strictly no phones in work*
Philippines:nah iss okay-
Thank you for your service lifeguards, ya'll rock just like police officers, firefighters, emts, and doctors, and nurses!

Hey I saw Jewels from Bondi beach rescue, I am so frickin addicted to that show❤
Hate to be that person but its Jules not Jewels.
Lol I stilll love the talks !!!!
Is there any jobs where you don't have to follow strict rules?
No
McDonald’s
Love how they included Bondi! Awesome
The picture of the “Boy Scouts” are actually Cub Scouts
Being a lifeguard is the best job ever. Wouldn’t have it any other way
The life guards at my pool always have chats with me and a lot of other people, we don’t have a rule against that
me (an aussie) : their not lifeguards. that's not a proper tower. where's their equipment. what a shit beach
me 2 seconds later : hey its jules from bondi its on at 6:30 tonight. love that show. absolutely perfect. how did people not know it existed. shaped my childhood it did.
I'm just waiting for my wendy peppercorn
How are these “strict”
As a lifeguard myself, this isn’t true at all.
Ty Tobes even though I’m not. I watch Bondi Rescue and is a reality tv show and I learn a lot on the show
Wheyyy i noticed Jules on some of these clips . 7:31 . Shes a lifeguard at bondi beach in Australia @bondirescue (on youtube) and her instagram is @ mermaid.with.a.message
My campground had like 4-5 lifeguards and two of them were able to make small talk with me and other guests since we come twice a year.
Joleen swimsuits I’m cringing it’s Jolyn
i swim competitively with jolyn, and it also hurt my emotionally and spiritually when she said joleen😂
Hey that’s Jules from bondi
Really captain obvious
@@zacmurray1247 not like n did anything wrong
@@zacmurray1247 I don’t even watch bondi and more so
Girl scouts also say be prepared I guess women still don’t get equal treatment
Education so thank you
The whole Video is based on another Video of the interview with Britney Austin
They must have bought A LOT of sunscreen
Whoaaa Nicola and Jules of Bondi beach are in here!!!
i’m a lifeguard and lifeguard supervisor. in order to get our certification we have to be 15, swim 300yds, swim 25 yds and get the 10lb brick at the bottom of 8ft and then swim it back 25yds in 1.5mins or less, and then also tread legs only for 2 minutes. we have to do about 30 hours of training total. i did 20hrs in class and about 9 hours online. becoming a qualified lifeguard candidate is way more in depth than she described....js
This video made me feel like i worked out for 2 hours what the h*ll???
Bondi proves otherwise
I love how Bondi Rescue is just here in snippets
When you have 6 jolyns because your a swimmer
I live in australia and do surf life saving and we don’t have to do any of the rules?
Me too I am Aussie to
#aussiesquad
my dream is to be a lifeguard at bondi beach. i’m going to achieve that.
hailey same but I can’t because I’m having surgery soon ☹️ but I do want to go there one day
Great video, Question say your a lifeguard and your on pool for 1 hour what is adequate time to refresh yourself fill your water bottle up etc before going back on pool. Is 10min to little to refocus?
hi fellow lifeguards in the comments debunking these myths LMAO, i'm red cross certified and a lot of these are just very very general things to know. although the test to become a lifeguard is accurate, a lot of us don't need to go through super intensive training depending at the facility or beach you work at, but you DO have training at your workplace about guarding ever so often. also! you don't spend all day, it really just depends on your shift time. it's not as hard as it looks or sounds, but it does get pretty scary when someone's life is in your hands.
3:36 that’s *NOT* a myth
Actually they do have a bath room it’s right in front of them 😧😦
(I’m joking don’t hate!)
I’m a lifeguard and the certification requirements are wrong. You need to swim 300 yards free or breast, tread for 2 minutes without arms, and swim 20 yards to retrieve a 10lb brick at the bottom of the pool and swim back without using your arms holding the brick on your chest
We took the lifeguard training at 14 so the next summer when we were 15 we could work. In New England.
3:22 or like Kim’s diamond earring
Why should female guards wear such revealing clothes...aren’t t shirts and shorts enough?
You are more than welcome to wear a t-shirt and shorts as long as you train to rescue in them. If you don't, they can weigh you down. 1 piece swimsuits are also an option but trust me as someone who has done 14 hr shifts guarding in FL, with how hot it is ya want to wear a suit. If modesty is an issue, you probably shouldn't be a guard as it can get real personal real fast
You try swimming in cotton clothes loose fabric rather than a tight easy to move in fabric. It’s like asking why Olympic athletes wear swim suits. It’s to optimize their speed and movement
This isn't about showing more or less skin, this is about being more efficient in order to save someones life, and the reality is that more fabric = more weight in the water, so the less the better.
Magic Girl we have to wear shorts and a top cause we work indoors and outdoors but we can decide to take them off whenever we want
The lifeguards at my pool are always talking to guests and is on their phones also they just leave and then blow the whistle, sometimes there is no lifeguards at all so we choose when we go in and get out
Once i was at the beach and the ocean stole my flip flop
legend says its still out there
So you can't pee the entire day. And by the way what happens If your on your period?
What happens if u have a Super bad infection when u were younger and u cannot hold your pee (I have this infection) I am only 11
Ye I mean it's not really true for most places, there are bathrooms for people visiting the beach usually, and at all pools there are bathrooms :-|
If the talko pins this comment they love their fans
I am a female & I was a lifeguard for 6 years.. most of this is common sense (sunscreen, sunglasses, water, training), and the other is just suggestions. I worked for pools, so i can't say for the beach stuff. I have no clue what they are talking about face cream and beauty stuff. I never heard of the vaseline trick. We didn't wash off after every rescue or change swimsuits when they got wet, I mean we are in and out of the water all day! We only ever exercised on breaks if we were bored, we only had 5 -10 mins breaks each hour and that goes by so fast. Never heard of that brand of swimsuit, we got ours out of catalogs for lifeguards, I think our brand was tyr? We were never told not to eat big, but it just came naturally to eat small and snack throughout the day cause our breaks were only 5-10mins long. NEVER heard of anyone who did "ice baths".... ever
My local pool is open, and I recently went with four friends (one being my twin brother) who all spent six hours every day within six feet of each other and me, so we’re each other’s bubbles. We got into the pool and started swimming, and this life guard started yelling at us to swim six feet apart, even tho everybody else wasn’t. We did it, thinking it was ridiculous as we had never been told that before when we went swimming. A few minutes later he came back and told us that it was our second warning, and once more we’d be kicked out. We were still six feet apart at that time. I even tried to explain to him that we are all in the same bubble but he wouldn’t listen to me. Thankfully, after just ten minutes he went off duty and switched out with another life guard. After that, we just swam normally
