But when she pressed a button in the corner, I got goosebump, that entrance was both surprising and amazing
These bunker videos re mixing. I really appreciate watching them having spent time In an office in a bunker in the American sector of the occupied city of West Berlin in 1987.
I visited nearly all bunkers on GDR territory. There are much more an even bigger command posts. One time I was really afraid - there was a 600 meter tunnel and on tje left and right intersections into smaller two floor bunkers. At the end I found an exit but I couldnt find the car. Unbelieveable expensive underground installation - this was south if Berlin.
Thank you DW for such an excellent and informative documentary! Having a long time interest in post war history of DDR, Machern was one site I never saw as it was closed when I was at Leipzig.
Same for me. I lived in Leipzig too between 92/94. Tks for infos in this doku. What I noticed is the "selective protection" for high-us of the regime... Their obsession of preserving surveillance of potential opponents after nuclear collapse... Sounds so absurd ! And the insanity of such delusional protection. How long woulda they survive?! Same debate today with idiotic people whotrully believe they could survive such a kind of total war.... With supplies in a bunker for 6 months... A year for a few people. When yu study their shelter technically lot of "holes in the tennis racket" appears... Which will condemn them to a postponed death... That's all !!! Same as for those stasi members indeed. Last point is about the prices of such bullshits.... Buildings these bunker sites cost a lot... And was useless. Lucky were we.! But it cost.
Such amazing documentaries. DW is the best. I found a few boring I wouldn't lie but is not like they were boring, they were very german and specific and slow pacing, some people talking in long sequences. I enjoy all of them though! Very informative and I always learn new thing I didn't know at all or partially.
As an American, I have several comments. DW puts out another great documentary. This was fascinating. Next JFK would be furious after that whole Cuban missle thing. Also, I am impressed with the engineering that went into these bunkers, and that they were secret for so long. Lastly, I always find it interesting that the USSR was supposed to be a classless society but they had fancy toilets and beds for the leaders. If I were a leader under all the pressure, I'd want a nice toilet to sit on a think too. 🤔
I remember the one you did on tunnels in eastern europe cities last year (?) and this is better. A good day as I've learnt something new, never too old!! Sorry, just a suggestion - tone down the techno over intrusive background music, let us concentrate on what's being said, the most important part.
The short-range nuclear-capable missiles that were stored in East Germany were more than likely intended to deliver tactical nuclear weapons, as opposed to those that could destroy entire cities. The purpose behind these tactical nuclear weapons was twofold. First, to provide tactical support as Soviet and Warsaw Pact forces invaded Western Europe. Second, to prevent or halt any successful NATO counteroffensives.
At 39:42....an antenna socket in the bunker to "watch tv" AFTER a nuclear war? Ok. And what exactly did they think was gonna be on? Cartoons? SNL? Amazing stuff.
The "leftovers" - my uncle told me he remembers the boom from the weekly planned detotation of such leftovers at a former depot in Northern Germany. He is born in the early fifties. Even today there are certain areas there where the soil can be burned because it still contains enough TNT.
Thank you,,for this great documentary,,After this please do about east german prison,For those suspected of being enemies of the country, thank you❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
37:30 at least the Olympic cyclists would have had a place there. Amazing. This is one of the most interesting cold-war bunker videos. No cool BS nonsense, just facts from people who appear to know what they're talking about
Oh, how charming! The Soviet occupation of East Germany is a distant memory from over 35 years ago, yet US troops have been “enjoying” their extended stay in Germany for nearly 80 years. But don’t worry-channels like DW seem to have conveniently misplaced that little detail, probably thanks to their generous American sponsors. It’s amazing how selective memory works when there’s funding involved!
Yeah, the famous US dictatorship and stasi jailhouses... And walls against escape... Oh wait, that was east germany, and the people protested to join the west
I am from eastern europe I use to play as kid in those bunkers in 80 s , the most amazing thing is after 30 minutes we was capable te see little better in dark and after few games we was able to run in dark, I remember like today , we had plan for civilians we had training in case of war , but here in west?????
I wonder how the government's would have operated when nuclear war was in full swing. Doubt that any of the re-war government's would have survived or continuing to be revaland in the post- war world with full on collaps underway out side thoes bunker and chances that most of those government official would have madet to the bunkers in time is questionable at best.
if they happened to get to the bunkers and survived they would have come out to rule over a dying wasteland. only to die themselves some time later due to lack of food and water. As full out nuclear war would have pretty much killed everything off in the northern hemisphere if not the entire planet.
@@Dratchev241 well yes it could be total wipe out but nukes radioactive will halve rapidly and some rural towns will be effect less than the city's so wodent they survive better. USSR literally had no reason to dissolve, I suspect something else is afoot, like a longer plan game, to infiltrate the west via western born sleepers... and we see the same policies as back then in todays world enacted by so called defenders of Democracy
A wonderful historical coverage documentary about GDR leftover bonkers designed during Cold War years...documentary shared by an amazing ( DW) documentary channel...Maybe the US, Britain, French having such bunkers for highly ranking peoples civilians and militarily highly ranking not for all citizens .

Nothing much to see. Smoke mirrors and false narratives.
Maybe that is because it is a documentation on EAST Germany? 😅

While I wouldn't be surprised that nuclear weapons were stationed in East Germany, the evidence as presented in this video are flimsy at best.
Some of these places might make good wine stores. Also useful during any genuine emergency.
My grandparents' house in Tokyo had an underground bunker in the yard. They built it during the Pacific War. They kept family treasures in there.

The narrator saying “SHtazi” is so annoying. There is no H in the word STAZI.
