  • It's normal for anyone who moves to the country from a busy urban environment to feel a bit worried about becoming a victim of crime. The good news is that the statistics don't support that fear. You are much less likely to be a victim of violent crime in the country. However, opportunistic crime still happens where a criminal will take their chances if they see an easy target.
In this video we show you the simple steps we have taken to make our property less inviting to criminals are more likely to look for an easier target. There will be something in our set up that will work for you.

On my father’s ranch, in the USA, he foolishly revealed some of his security system strategies to neighbors. One of those neighbors robbed his house. Since the keys to the ranch vehicles were inside the house, the thieves used them to move valuables out to their vehicles that were parked outside the locked gates. Moral of the story, keep your personal business personal.

Dogs are very effective too, they'll go nuts if they sense someone has got through the gate. @@Norfolkbiker50 That's crazy. According to the Guard Dogs Act 1975, 'it is a legal requirement in the UK to display clear signage by the entrances of your property to notify the public of potential threats'. However, I am aware that the owner would still be liable for prosecution, even if the intruder had forced a break in and was trying to escape with your valuables. Apparently, it helps if you also make it clear that there is no admittance without prior appointment, and have a post box and a doorbell next to the sign so that people have no reason to enter your property.

They came over the fields a few weeks back at 3am. Three of them. Walked right through my property checking outbuildings while filming the process on their phones. They continued to my neighbours fence and climbed over a low livestock fence. They found his cannabis farm. Next thing there were another 7-8, they walked right along past my fence in the field. Tracksuits, trainers, wearing gold necklaces. All on cctv. They were carrying bin liners stuffed with 'plants' backwards and forwards along the field like ants. The farmer had just that day sprayed the fields with excrement but they probably didn't even notice it 😅
I have a guard cat who watched the whole thing sat on the fence but decided not to alert me. Probably just as well, they will have all been carrying something. The neighbour asked me for footage, I told him where to go. 2 wrongs don't make a right and I'm keeping out of it.
They must have been tipped off by a delivery driver or someone walking past because you could smell it a mile off. The fact that they knew the general location but not the building would suggest this. They literally were sniffing the gaps around roller shutters and doors. The most annoying thing is this place is well tucked away, and now through the idiot next door, the whole of the underworld know about it.

‼️ As a security consultant and expert witness in the US, I enjoyed this video and nice tips. I was especially impressed with the ‘second layer’ of locking down your expensive tools. Layered security is always preferable. Further considerations could be refined as follows:
#1: On the tool shed, I am not a fan of exposed padlock hasps as they can be angle grinder cut or large pry susceptible that attack the surface the device is mounted to, like wood. I prefer the “hockey puck” looking locks with completely concealed shackles often seen on service vans. These can be used on any surface they fit.
#2: On storage sheds, when it’s possible use locks where the locking mechanism is behind the door and the area for the key cylinder has an armor face over the lock key way cylinder.
#3: The weakest part of any entry door is the wood. It will split and screws will often pull out. I use Oak or Walnut dowel rods that I cut to length reinforce the door lock area. You can buy these in one meter or less lengths which require a 13 or 14mm circle edge wood drill bit often very deep hole you vacuum out and stuff with high end wood glue (I use Gorilla Glue) and drill a bit deeper and cut the dowel a little shorter so you can tap flush. These are also suitable to drive into the door edge near the lock and also use on hinge screws on the door and frame side. I use longer screws and always drill a pilot hole for screws. You can drill these into the studs behind to door. Be super careful to stay away from electrical and many door bell cables are often tucked just behind the frame (yes, I have hit a few many years back). I use a Walbot to see wires, pipes, etc inside wall cavity’s.
#4: I prefer to use locks with Medeco or MultiLock anti drill anti pick features. The keys also may be registered, a subject all on its own. Trust me, these are the cheapest form of security for the money since regular locks can be opened with bump keys and limited skills.
#5: I am a big fan of having at absolute minimum a wall safe. These sit between wall studs and are as deep as a medicine wall box and some stick out and add depth. The lock should be a press button and there should be a key override. These wall safes should be placed in a very convenient location. Often this is behind a door like the master bedroom where when the door is physically open, it hides the safe. The reason I really like these as common cash and valuables can be kept from a smash and go and if you have cleaning or contractors in the house, the pilfer likelihood opportunity is removed. The biggest reason I like these is you mount these centered at chest height so it’s very easy to access and that increases the likelihood of use. Floor safes require you get on your hands and knees or painfully bend way over to press in a code and unlock and it’s hard to see. Floor safes are fine for things you rarely go to but must remain secure. Any floor safe under 700 pounds should be bolted down. You would be shocked to see how easy it is to move a safe with three roller bars, a crowbar and a few sheets of Masonite to roll the safe over.
#6: I prefer Alarm systems that are connected via Internet and a cellular back up to a listed alarm central station. I like the phone apps as well but would never rely on these as a primary means of notification. Cell networks have holes and I’m cold times a winter jacket can suppress the alert. Furthermore, in the US you get a better discount for a fully monitored alarm and I always push for smoke and fire detection that gets the fire trucks rolling immediately. I prefer alarms where each user has their own arming/disarming code with a built in time stamped rolling log of the last hundred system operations. I have a Visitor Code built in so if I had to, I can give out that code. For example, you are out of town or someone’s in the hospital and the anomaly can be dealt with.
#7: I’m prefer to have at least one entry door in the house with a digital keypad lock for the reason above and if you lock yourself out. For those who have attached garages to the house, I a passionate about the lock from the garage being a digital deadbolt lock. You can always be in the habit of locking it and you will never be locked out. I like the Schlage deadbolt model, it’s very reliable and the 9 volt battery lasts two years or more. NOTE: I do not like internet connected locks except where they absolutely necessary. There can be security compromises (like “man in the middle” and “hacker keys”). Furthermore many deadbolt locks bind unless they are set perfect and weather causes door anomalies of fit.
The main objective are layers of security that are easy for all users to cooperate with. Strive for “reasonable inconvenience” or “passive and automatic” (a subject of much more details). Although you may not stop “the very most determined”, these practices stop the by and large who are looking for a fast paced unlawful acquisition of your property. I use the example of a moat, drawbridge and alligators - quite good right? However a helicopter or large drone that can carry the weight of a human can be a game changer.

In England our houses are built differently (almost exclusively brick or stone), studs are for interior walls and not considered secure here. 4 M10 expanding bolts into weight bearing masonry is the minimum here for even a 2mm gun cabinet. Different countries, different rules 🙂

@@EnglishCountryLife Interesting, I was wondering about your construction. In the US wood studs measure 1.5 inches (4cm) x 3 inches (7.6 cm) so 4 large lag bolts - two to the left and two to the right stud are spaced at 16 inch intervals (cheap construction at 24 inches). We don’t have gun safe specifications in the US, except perhaps in specific States I am not aware of. The whole “second amendment” thing here, government just don’t touch my gun thing. Very interesting! When we lived on a 4-acre smallholding in rural West Yorkshire, agricultural theft was a constant concern and we spend a small fortune on deterrents following a string of thefts, but since moving to rural SW France, we've been amazed at how relaxed local farmers are about theft. There is expensive equipment left out all over the place and very few, if any, security measures are taken by farmers. Of course, we brought our UK sensibilities with us and have all of our lights and cameras set up. My neighbour, a french farmer, thinks we're crazy. He recently told us that the last agricultural theft in the area was in 2007 and that we are over-egging the risk. We're keeping the cameras up for the time being, but are very interested in the notion that agricultural theft is something of a UK-specific issue. I'm not sure why this should be the case, but it really doesn't seem to be a 'thing' over here. It's strange since the local gendarmerie are about as useless as the UK police, but we certainly haven't encountered any issues ourselves thus far (touch wood). Better safe than sorry I say.

My thoughts, always check your cctv: just to make sure it's recording and working, and on the gas bottle advice, I'd suggest bicycle locks as opposed to the cables. The cables can be cut very easily is they can't be made to be difficult to cut (tight wrapping on items).
    Other than that good advice.

Thanks for this video. Here in rural Ontario Canada I couldn't have cameras thanks to lack of proper internet over most rural areas of the country. I literally never saw a video play higher than 144p and it would take dozens of tries over days to upload or send a large file...cameras sure as heck were not going to work. Think what one will of Elon Musk I now have peace of mind as I now have great internet so this means having security cameras AND I can see your lovely property and smiling face clear in high definition. Many can now make money they couldn't before and rural kids can do online classes and research for homework. It's been life changing for many. As an artist I'm now on my local studio tour as I feel safe knowing when people come I can watch over things. If anyone rural has been thinking about Starlink I highly recommend if you are unable to use cameras due to being on satellite.

Unfortunately we didn't know how to keep the security cam footage it deletes after 7 days, nit that I think I would help clear as fog tall guy in 40s with a hat that me n hubby had different opinions 😂 next door but two had all his tools nicked that night. If there are active individuals on your property, the sensible thing is to call 999 and explain urgently and with vehemence that there is a burglary in progress. If the people are masked, armed or making you feel unsafe its important to communicate that you feel that you are in danger as this may well elicit a more urgent response

Great video. I'd like to add that any camera which you can access online is vulnerable to being accessed by people who aren't you. For privacy reasons then, it is not a good idea to use these types of cameras where you expect to have privacy. There have been many lawsuits and vulnerabilities are found often as the feed from your camera goes to the cloud and bad actors could access the feed remotely.

You need to be careful with the resolution of CCTV. There is a detection acronym called DORI, in order for someone to be convicted they must be identifiable (The I part of DORI). For example a 4MP good quality camera has a identification range of about 4m, outside of that a good lawyer could argue it is not his client. There is a lot of cheap CCTV out there that is worthless, and motion detection alerts are normally switched off after a few weeks due to constant alerts at night. Good systems have intrusion, line cross, face detection and human vehicle classification, but you should expect to pay £2000 for a 4 camera system at that level.

    • @EnglishCountryLife
      @EnglishCountryLife  20 днів тому
