  • Tudor Queens brings together Diana Damrau, Antonio Pappano, and the Orchestra dell' Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia to explore the operas of Donizetti and paint musical portraits of three iconic women of English royalty. Discover: w.lnk.to/dtqLY
    Each opera takes a Tudor Queen as its central figure: Anne Boleyn, the second of Henry VIII’s six wives, in Anna Bolena; Mary, Queen of Scots, in Maria Stuarda; and Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen, in Roberto Devereux.
    "Donizetti’s music gives the voice the greatest freedom and support with atmosphere, energy and the most beautiful melodies," says Diana. "There are heavenly moments when it feels as if time is standing still … To interpret this music the singer needs to be absolutely committed and trusting, but also ready to take risks."

    Performance fantástica!!!
    Alguns conseguem fazer tecnicamente bem...

    as we know, Stuarda is one of Donizetti's masterpeice. and ofcourse Damrau is our generation's precious belcanto singer.
    I'm so glad that I can see and listen her Preghiera here. I can not wait to see her other Tudor Queens such as Bolena and Elisabetta, scenes and the full album!
    now I'm waiting for her "ah se un giorno..." recordings! cause we know she already recorded "nella pace" scene befor! 😉 YAS QUEEN!

    I am a little bit apprehensive for this new album. I cannot deny Diana Damrau's commitment to her art. However, after what I have seen in her recent performances as Maria Stuarda in Berlin, Violetta at the Met, and Ophelie also here in Berlin, her super top notes are going to go under serious, serious scrutiny, as it seems like she no longer has them. This does not help that Maria Stuarda, Anna Bolena, and Elisabetta I are roles designated for a dramatic coloratura soprano and Diana Damrau is far from being a dramatic coloratura soprano, but I could still salute her for bravely giving these queens a go in this new release. She is more of a lyric soprano disguising herself as a coloratura soprano because she was once upon a time really well-known as The Queen of the Night but transitioned to singing Pamina after her final Queen at The Met in 2007, which was a sign of things to come of where her voice was really going to in the lyric route and not the coloratura route. Even when looking back at some of her performances a few years back, a lot of her top notes ended up sounding like glorified squeaks and not like what they used to sound like back in the late 1990s to early to mid-2000s where the voice got heavier in the 2010s. It also did not help that she cancelled some performances such as Marguerite de Valois in Paris and Marguerite from Faust in London as well as Berlin only to be replaced by Lisette Oropesa and Mandy Fredrich plus Irina Lungu and Nicole Car in Berlin respectively. At least when she did Contessa Almaviva and has an upcoming Countess Madeleine from Capriccio in the works, I can see that she is someone who should endeavor to head towards the lyric soprano repertoire with roles such as Liu, Micaela, Arabella, Melisande, Charpentier's Louise, Blanche de la Force, Rachel from La Juive, Mimi, Concepción from Ravel's L'Heure Espagnol, Ellen Orford, and Nedda from Pagliacci and not the Bel Canto roles she still attempts to perform.

      She has said in interviews as much - she is really a light lyric with coloratura facility. But she sang coloratura repertoire for years and years -zerbinetta, Aminta from die schweigsame Frau, Qotn, etc, ultra high roles that were always going to affect the chords negatively if that is not where the voice naturally sat. There’s no way she’s heavy enough for the full lyric/light spinto roles you mention - she’s left it far too late to transition to another repertoire if that is the plan.

    • @danielhughes441
      @danielhughes441 4 роки тому +8

      I concur. Her singing is beginning to be more labored. This happens to the best of them (listen to the disaster Anna Netrebko has become). Often, this is due to labels or management pushing artists to do rep that is not really right for them.

    • @LaDivinaLover
      @LaDivinaLover 4 роки тому +7

      Daniel Hughes Netrebko was never one of “the best of them” so that’s a horrible example. She is as messy and tasteless now as she was a decade ago. The only difference is now her supermodel looks are going away.
      All That said, Damrau was at one point a true talent and one that I really enjoyed. But, Now, she needs to take a break and focus on reconditioning her voice and technique if she doesn’t want to end up voiceless and without a career. She’s certainly not old enough to need retirement and she should just now be going into real vocal prime. It’s sad really she shouldn’t be having this much trouble as she hasn’t really pushed her voice that much.

      lora layons Thank you. The singing on this album is horrible. It even sounds like she has a wobble. She has a very shakey annoying vibrato too. Even Callas whose voice wasn’t always that pretty, sounded so much better in this music, atleast Callas would savor the words, and enunciate and sing with expression, feeling, and emotional intelligence. Listening to this performance of Diane Darmu is painful, almost every words and phrase she sings sounds the same. Another one of these younger singers, who are heavily marketed with glamour photos, but is seriously lacking in technique and is either singing the wrong repertoire, or is already in serious vocal decline, but these roles have been sung by coloraturas before. All one would have to do is listen to Caballe’s recordings of some of these arias from these operas to tell what is missing from this video. With Caballe you would here near perfect technique, extraordinary breath control, legato, and her voice would pronounce the words as easy as speaking, with expression, and then take the high notes with great ringing beauty as well as her soft floated pianissimos. Diana however sounds like she is trying to warble through each aria, bringing a cringing pain to her listeners who have any discernment, taste, or basic knowledge of how these arias sound sung by many other singers with good technique and a feel for these pieces, especially those singers many who were past their prime and started to retire from the opera stages in the 1980s, and maybe continued to sing some rectials or concerts. Caballe, Callas, sutherland, Sills and dare I say it even Renee Fleming sound much better singing these types of roles and arias than Diane Darmu. Does anyone know for sure what is wrong with her?
      and hear what one is missing

    RECITATIVOS
    Na ópera Maria Stuarda, de Donizetti, vem a ária
    Deh! tu di un umile, com os recitativos de prece.
    Espalhe um véu sobre eventos dolorosos. A área
    Espiritual é bem sutil, pois realidade transparece.
    A transparência ou a clarividência dos fatos vem
    À tona, revelando o que nós trazemos no íntimo.
    A prece vem antecedida pelos atos que fervem
    Em nossa mente, optando-nos em manter ânimo.
    Os tempos da pandemia são tempos redobrados
    Para espalhar um véu sobre os eventos dolorosos
    Fazendo todos ao nosso redor sentir-se amados.
    A egrégora, que congrega os pensamentos, traz
    O clima favorável no ambiente, ficamos vigorosos
    Realçando o que prevalece pra todos nós é a paz. (*)

    What's with all the arm motion? Is that a new way of singing? Does Damrau use all of this motion on stage? I see that some enjoy all the arm-waving. Sorry, but I'm not a fan. It detracts from the music, IMO.
    It sounds like Damrau is at least ten years too late in recording this repertoire. The voice has gotten heavy and to my ear has pitch problems. It's too bad that things were more ideal as this music receives little attention these days. It's still hard to top Sills/Sutherland/Caballe - even Gruberova in these works.

      They are recording a CD and this seems to help her phrasing. Of course she does not do this during live performances! You take great pleasure in your very negative critique. What conductor would allow those hand gestures during a live stage performance? Please think.

      So many great singers end up uglifying their voice with these huge wobble with age or having been some time at the top... Is that due to overabuse and lack of care and practice once they are at the top? Look at what happened to Netrebko... And she is not even 50!

    • @irenegrijalvotarres

    • @greatmomentsofopera7170
      @greatmomentsofopera7170 4 роки тому +3

      Albert Baulies Pérez it can be due to many things. One is that the Vocal chord’s do indeed slacken with age - it’s a soft tissue after all, and we know what happens to skin. However, if it happens prematurely, then it is usually due to abuse of the chords as you say - lack of support, over exertion in roles which are too heavy, or a host of other issues.

    I got a bad feeling already with the first note (why the portamento?) and unfortunately it got progressively worse. Diana's voice is developing a wobble, she's also off beat quite often, not to mention the overall dry, whiny sound. This recording doesn't do justice to this beautiful piece of music. Luckily we have Marina Rebeka's wonderful version.
