To be honest Djokovic is looking really clean and powerful lately. Medvedev is more unorthodox style but he had the heart. I see this being an intense rivalry.
People talk about the shots, pace and serve of Daniil a lot. You need to talk about his biggest asset, his movement. His movement is absolutely so underrated. One of the best on tour. You can't hit through him because he gets to everything. He is very fast, with long arms, and a long stretch stance, so Novak just could not get anything by him. Other than a few bad shots, Novak did not play poorly. Daniil was on another level. Medvedev will have more problems with guys like Roger or Thiem. Medvedev came with a game plan. Hold your serve, play aggressive on his serve. When novak serves just rally with him for as long as you can until novak cracks.
You gotta push Djokovic back off the baseline and take away his early shots because Djokovic is one dimensional and plays only one way so he will try to take it early anyway but will make mistakes. You basically got to frustrate him to beat him.
Probably he will. I'll be hugely disappointed if he ends but being one slam wonder. That's highly unlikely though, with this level and current competition I see him getting 3-6 slams which puts him in league with courier, murray etc.

Djokovic has been on the edge mentally the entire tournament and that's why he's been losing the first sets for almost every matches into the final. However, the other players can't keep the level up for long enough and that breathe life into Djokovic's game. Kudos to Medvedev that he maintain high level throughout.

Medvedev was a tennis genius that night.
Glad Medvedev could silence that classless New York crowd.
Forward Russia, only forward for victory, well done hero.
Daniil is the mad professor, looks like somebody lost in his style, but his accuracy and placement is just freak. Congrats for his first Slam.
Novak is a mental giant, of course, but in the end he fail in the last hurdle, but still a great champion.
Unique performance by Danil. What a fantastic play.He deserved his grand slam,U S open.
Thank you US Open! Release these the day after, that way you grow the sport and show the highest level of play. We’ll done 👏
I watched Novak's post match conference interview and he said his serve wasn't there like it usually was, it certainly didn't look that way, I just think Daniil was at his top level and he was determined not to be dictated to in the rallies, he also varied his tactics during the match, he just played a near perfect match. This is great for tennis to have a new Grand Slam champion, the US Open is so exciting, definitely becoming one of my favorite tournaments.
Nice, other matches I would like to se extended highlights on:
1) Murray Tsitsipas
2) Alcaraz Tsitsipas
3) Zverev Djokovic
4) Sinner Monfils
5) Evans Popyrin
Still remember when they said it's gonna be 3-0 for Djokovic. The ignorance of some people
You can beat Djokovic, if you have the fire power of Stan or Thiem! Medvedev has now added himself to that list, Domi almost did it, in 2020- but choked!
Medvedev beat Novak at his own game
💯% agreed bro, even I think dark horses like sinner, alcarez, harris, can be a potential threat for him in the future, for beating Djokovic a player must not physically fit,he should be mentally fit.
Daniil,Thiem & Stan are in that list to beat him
Medvedev had a different strategy. His serve is a big weapon.
Thiem could've won AO 2020 but he crumbled under pressure.

@@707ladytee What's that?
i kind of imagine this is how Roger feels when he plays the younger Djokovic, he's not able to get the ball past him but can still do it. Only except in this matchup it seems like Novak has a hard time generating his own pace and angles like Roger does
Roger is the player with more skills, djokovick is the thoughest athlete, but didn't have big rivals in the next generetions. Now we are starting to see real rivals
This is what it should look like for an old champ like Djokovic fairly regularly. Instead, it's like a one off, which says something about his next generation opponents. They all lost their heads playing him, except Medvedev in this match.
Amd Noval felt the pressure of having the crowd's expectations like Roger always does.
Djokovic crumbled under pressure in this match(unusual for him). Federer often does that as well so there's one more similarly.
@@apathak34 fed never gives up in a match and always fights until the end. Whenever he played a younger djokovic it was a tight battle. Just like wimbledon 2014/2015 and uso 2015. Older fed gave a younger peak nole a run for his money. Over here djokovic didnt even get a set from a solid medvedev.
He did to Djokovic what Djokovic did to him in Melbourne
The two finals were like complete opposites despite both being on hard courts. It's weird how Djokovic has struggled at the U.S Open over the years while he's mostly dominated the Australian Open.
And even more. He dominated, destroyed, embarrassed, humilitated, oblitirated Novak Djokovic on the highest stage of the sport where Djokovic was supposed to make history, was considered the biggest performer in big matches in tennis history on the biggest stage.

To be honest Djokovic is looking really clean and powerful lately. Medvedev is more unorthodox style but he had the heart. I see this being an intense rivalry.
Love how against meddy the crowd and commentators, and most of the viewers generally were. And he still showed them
People talk about the shots, pace and serve of Daniil a lot. Roger who can mix it up so well, hit huge approach shots, and put away volleys, or guys like Thiem, who can just blast through almost anyone. Well played.
Loved how Djokovic choked and could not finish the calendar slam. And then cried about it after the match.

Medvedev came with a game plan. Hold your serve, play aggressive on his serve. When novak serves just rally with him for as long as you can until novak cracks.
Yes and you can see why players lose against him. When you think about it you have to go back to 2020 french last time he lost a full match.
@jcorb :-D
Until Novak cracks? I doubt if that was part of his strategy.
"rally with him" yeeeeaaahh EASIER said than done
You gotta push Djokovic back off the baseline and take away his early shots because Djokovic is one dimensional and plays only one way so he will try to take it early anyway but will make mistakes. You basically got to frustrate him to beat him.

Medvedev plays very very well. With this form, it reminds me of Cilic’s top form in 2014. Hope Medvedev could sustain his form to earn multiple GS
Cilic was using very attacking style tennis.

Dear jonathan, Medvedev is much stronger now at the baseline.

People obviously know Medvedevs strokes are unorthodox but have to understand he is able to hit the ball so well due to his impeccable timing every single time it’s actually ridiculous. Wow what a clean victory for Medvedev! He played excellent tennis with impeccable serving, great hitting from the back of the court. I always consider him a player who plays high percentage shots and always get the ball back in play for longer rallies but the key was that he pulled the trigger and got aggressive at unexpected moments in the rallies..the insurance break in the 3rd saved him big time..Djoker was clearly feeling the pressure and nerves based on numerous uncharacteristic misses, with what was at stake but Medvedev deserved this so much…He was the better player overall and happy for his breakthrough…Tennis needs new faces to lift grand slam trophies…What a year for Djoker but next season will be very interesting to see…The Olympics losses and this one will sting a lot…Medvedev and Zverev seem to be the ones to watch out moving forward..and what a storyline with the big 3 still tied at 20-20-20…As a Fed fan, I didnt complain at Medvedev’s win but again hats off to Djoker for a phenomenal year!
