I needed this. I haven't picked up my violin in years and struggle with placing the bow on the correct string and it makes a horrible sound. I'm an extreme beginner. I play mostly by ear and had 4 violin lessons back in 2016. My goal is to create music for my YT videos and my dream to is play in bands that do that background music. Mainly for folk music. My daddy played the fiddle but we never got to see him do it because he never got strings for it and played the guitar 100% of the time.
Glad it helps. Neat experience, thanks for your story 👍🏻 We have a new guide available you may enjoy: fiddlehed.com/blog/how-to-play-violin-an-illustrated-beginners-guide-fiddlehed/

Awesome video! As a 2 year fiddle player, I play a little more choked up on the bow. about at the end of the padding my thumb is at a 90° with the tip placed right under the bow at the end of the padding. as of late I find myself putting a lot of pressure on my thumb and as I play i start putting pressure on the tip of it and when I take my hand off, the tip of my thumb hurts and looks like a shriveled up raisin. I try hard not todo this but as I start playing tunes I noticed my thump putting pressure on the button of the bow. I try mentally not to do it as I’m playing but it always finds Its way to do it anyways. Any advice would help thank you!
Hello, thanks for reaching out and sharing your experience. It seems your on your way to forming a new habit with this. Be gentle with yourself and give it time, consistently bringing focus back to this skill, and also letting go of needing to always focus on it. 🙂 We have a violin guide available that can support you further on this journey. Section 5.3 focuses further on bow hold: fiddlehed.com/blog/how-to-play-violin-an-illustrated-beginners-guide-fiddlehed/
