Tell you the truth, while I understand your complaints, BoF V is still one of my favourite games on the system. I would go as far as saying that it's a hidden gem, hidden under the insane amount of hate that it got through the years. Combat isn't nearly as bad as you figured, especially once you implement traps in it and I found myself actively using all 3 party members in battle. I also understand how restarting the game must be frustrating for most, but to me it made it a very unique gaming experience, getting rewarded with new weapons, parts of dungeons and especially cutscenes felt pretty good! Especially because the game eventually becomes really easy and you can run through the whole thing in just a few hours and eventually you discover that the game has a pretty good management aspect to it that ultimately leads you to Kokon-Horay. It's not for everybody, by all means and I totally understand how you didn't like it, but I also think that it doesn't deserve this spot and especially all the hatred.

      Agreed wholeheartedly..
      Dragon quarter was incredible..
Very solid combat, a solid ost and a story and a gameplay deeply interwined..
      You are not a dragon..
You are a human that got "infected" (fused) with a dragon but struggles to keep being human: when you find a poor being objectified for her function (Nina, basically an air purifier) you stake your claims to humanity by trying to save her.. if you cannot even save an helpless being you (Ryu//the player) won't even feel like being human anymore, but just a base beast made of instincts , a dragon and not an human..
On this complicated balance hinges both the story (you don't want to be a dragon, but at times you have to rely on its power, ultimately getting more and more dragon-ified, in powers, in aspect and in behavior) and the gameplay (your rating and your d-rank unlocks some area, affects how powerful you actually are, etc)..
So you got to be more than just a bottom feeder, but what's the cost? And are you sure you want to pay it? And if you pay it, will it be worth after you reach the sky? Is saving her, a quest that will fulfill your purpose and keep you tied to your humanity, an humanity to which you cling so painfully while.getting to know more about the dragon that you think is a monster, and the top rankers who treat everyone else as disposable garbage acting like the monster you're portraied as?
Heck the game is very good, and overly ambitious..
My only real gripe is that the group is "flat".. the third member it's just a third wheel that doesn't ever feel "functional", and I would have paced it a bit better...
And boy, oh boy, when people speak of "git gud".. limited saving, hard fights, etc.. this is the "git gud jrpg" at the first playthrough if you don't abuse the solr restart and want to keep a reasonably low dragon percentage...
      Also this game has Bosch..
I would love a new breath of fire, and while I would prefer a more "by the book"-one, with dragon transformation, masters, variable party, etc,.this game is by no frigging means a dud.. it's just an experimental game that unfortunately sealed the fate since a lot of jrpg players cannot appreciate when a games strays too much from the "canonical approach"

I cannot disagree with this guy more about Dragon Quarter. Wow. I mean, first off, DQ had the balls to change things up and STILL keep the lore from the previous games. Second, the game absolutely NAILED the survival horror theme and dark souls like bleakness of Ryu’s situation so much that beating the game is a friggin miracle in about itself. Not because of the challenge, but the expectations for your character is THAT low. So, triumphing in the game has this sense of accomplishment after failing multiple times.

King's Field as a series for me is all about the exploration, aesthetic, and atmosphere. No other series gives me the feeling of truly exploring a dead, dangerous ruined place like those games do. I'm into things like urbex, and the games actually give me the same vibe as some of the spookier places I've been to.
KF4 is actually in my top 5 for the PS2 lol. The only reason I even ended up buying a PS3 at all back in 2009 was explicitly because I heard about Demon's Souls being a spiritual successor to the KF series. You're right about the Souls cult fanbase though. Can't even have an honest discussion about any of the games anymore, because no matter what you say on most forums, the instant you aren't fellating the game with all your might, you'll be flooded with 'git gud' or 'skill issue' BS.

While I love the normal breath of fire series (and miss it), I also quite liked Dragon Quarter. Most of the criticism I hear about the game can be boiled down to 'why is this not like the other breath of fire games? ' Honestly I think the games structure was a little ahead of it's time, and I have a feeling if it was re-released today with a slight overhaul of some of the clunkier oddities of combat, amidst all these roguelikes it would be met with much more positivity.

First, I liked King's Field way before Souls became a thing. King's Field 2 was the first game I ever played on the Playstation, and I found the slower pace and exploration to be rather enjoyable. Second, I happen to like Ephemeral Fantasia. It wasn't perfect, and the music mini-game was a pain, even more so with the awkward controls for it, but I enjoyed it enough to get the three different endings. And finally, as perhaps the only person in existence who enjoys Time and Eternity, I feel I should probably say something... Eh, I got nothing.

So I just played it and learned how to play it and then it turned into loving to play it. For the story they went for, it pretty much had to be that way. It is shown in the story bits that the D-Form was extremelly powerful as it was punishing to the user's life.
So many games simply ignore all the magic and supernatural moves used in battle, and don't use or even mention them in the world building or story, and Dragon Quarter gets my praise for doing so.
But yeah, for a gameplay-only perspective, I guess some people would get frustrated with the limit. If the game came out today, I'm sure the devs would have added more accessibility options, such as halve the meter usage, give more saving options, etc.
And of course, it doesn't need to become a permanent mechanic for the new entries (that will never come, anyway). I love BOFIII basically as much as DQ, and I appreciate both the D-Dive system and the Gene system III had.

I like King’s Field (had no Soulsborne game so no this is not blind praise) but not how they numbered their games. The English dub didn’t get KF1 so they just dubbed the sequel and slapped a 1 on top. Really confusing since my first KF game happened to be the JP exclusive one.

Excellent video!! Very funny script and good choices on the games (though I have a soft spot for Baroque, but it does kinda suck). I must say that you are 100% correct about King's Field. To me, it sucks and always has. Boring, slow motion garbage. I had King's Field on PS1 and it was one of the most worthless video game experiences I have ever had. No one liked it back in the day, but, as you noted, people these daysseem to like to front as though they find something exceptional in this game simply because Fromsoft made it back before they knew how to make actual games.

Honestly I don't feel Dragon Quarter is that bad, but it Honestly should have been it's own thing that wasn't part of the main line breath of fire games. While the reason Ryu dies after using the Dragon form one too many time makes sense in context, Dragon fully taking him over and what not, could have easily worked as a demon for an original IP. On paper the idea is sound, but makes no sense as a BoF game where the draw is the main character becoming a Dragon is a positive thing. Suddenly it being a negative after 4 games was most likely jarring for most BoF fans.

  • @silver924

Imho Drgon Quarter is a bad Breath of Fire game, but an interestin and great game on its own. The only thing which kinda sucks is that the % goes up, if you use the dragonform, which makes it almost useless. Though granted, its not a game for everybody.

Part two; bring it on! We all know the PS2 was the greatest console released, so any negativity towards it is taken with a grain of salt. Besides, it did so well that there had to be “hidden gems of mass illusion” (aka cr@p) along with some of the best games to have ever been created. They can’t all be gold. Or silver. Or place. Honestly, they shouldn’t have competed.

I remember really liking bof dragon quarter, it was a solid srpg roguelike. As far as srpgs go, it was ahead if its time. It certainly did botch some stuff, like - there's basically no point to ever using the dragon form - but I enjoyed playing it. And to be fair to the title, it was never sold as a Bof 5, it was sold as dragon quarter.
I mean the biggest problem with the game is that it was an srpg sold as a jrpg, its no wonder jrpg fans didnt like it

It's interesting, and innovative, but ultimately I have to side with those who feel it's ultimately unsuccessful, and its genuinely compelling story & characters would have been better served by gameplay more in line with the previous games in the franchise.
On the other hand, I do think it's better to go out on a compelling failure than to stagnate into obsolescence, so as much as I don't think dragon quarter works as a game, I can't dislike it.

    • @EXHellfire
      @EXHellfire Рік тому +3

The thing is, the penalty of game over is intended to be a natural and organic part of the game. It's not a game where you should feel bad for having failed but rather feel refreshed at how much easier it gets as you push through

Dragon Quarter is definitely a game that shouldn't have been called a Breath of Fire game. It's so incredibly divorced from anything in the series that if the game wasn't called Breath of Fire and the 2 main characters named Ryu and Nina you'd never know it was ever supposed to be. I think it would've been much better received had it not been treated an entry in the BoF series.
