I haven’t watched the full video yet but, I like to unbox my dolls for a couple of a reasons. I only live 1 time. Even if it’s rare it’s mine, I get to do what I want to do with it. I don’t have enough space. I like to play with them because I never got to as a kid because I’m male. Dressing them up gives them more personalization/gives me more connection IMO. It’s my money lol. I’d go crazy seeing a doll I save up for a long time just sit on a shelf collecting dust. I’m never selling my collection. I don’t care about it’s value. And, I most likely bought it because it’s pretty.

I open dolls to pose them and blend them into their environment (aka my room), love to make it seem like they're just doing their own little thing like chitchatting on my desk, hanging out on my bookshelf, or even fighting on my dresser. Can't really do that when they're in their box.

My opinion on boxes has totally flipped in the last few months. I used to think that the boxes helped protect the doll and thought I'd only buy new in box dolls, but I collect primarily vintage dolls, 20+ years old, so dolls that have been sealed in box for that long have not been maintained at all and often still get dusty and can still get damaged from temperature and sun exposure, so they're often much more work to restore than a loose doll. I also find that dolls that I have kept displayed in their boxes require more upkeep than the loose ones (depending on how everything was stored) because their hair gets way more messed up inside the box than displayed on a stand. Also I love just touching them and cleaning them up and feeling their fabrics and hair and you can't even see their feet sometimes inside the box. I get neurotic about taking care of them and keeping them in good shape so the boxes now get in my way more than help me in that goal.
And it turns out a lot of collectors feel similarly so you don't even necessarily get value out of keeping it in box. Loose dolls complete and well maintained sell for as much if not more than shitty boxed dolls.

It’s kind of weird but honestly I keep some of my dolls In box because it gives me that feeling of walking down an isle at toysrus and seeing a shit ton of dolls on the shelves! Another reason is to kind of “preserve” them because I’m known to lose earring and mess up hair and etc

I actually sew doll clothes, so leaving them in box would mean that I can't make them any new outfits or use them as models. I find that changing their clothes and dressing them up is very theraputic for me, as someone with anxiety issues.

I prefer to take my dolls out of the box just so I can really appreciate and look at them. I also still enjoy dressing them up and doing their hair too! Also boxes take up so much space that I could better fill with more dolls 😋 of course this is my personal opinion, and there are a few dolls I’ve kept in box, but for the most part I prefer to free them from the box :)

I notice that a lot more “western” (srry lol) companies are starting to package doll like the rest of the world, in which they are removing the clear plastic where you see the doll. Like for example the new barbies and the new Disney store dolls. The reason why is because they want to be more environmentally friendly which is great of course! Although this means that I’m guessing future dolls will have less extravagant packaging, mostly for the play line dolls. This doesn’t bother me cause I’m not in box collector but I just wanted to note that

Personally, I tend to open my dolls if they fall under the few categories that allows me to open it guilt free:
    -Is it moldy?
    -Do I have a duplicate
    -Is the box ruined?
    -Do I have enough space
-Could I easily get this doll back if i wanted to
Though, regardless, I tend to not really care at the end of the day, if i decide to keep her in, or open her, its my decision, and its a cool thing about collecting. Also I tend to find my self not opening playline dolls much, as alot of collector dolls tend to be more common in box.

I'm 63. "To old for dolls". So I've been told over and over. However, I don't care. I LOVE collecting dolls, especially Barbie. It brings back my childhood. Most of them I've taken out of the box. I've heard the same thing...not as worth as much out of the box. That is NOT the reason I collects dolls. I have the doll clothes too. I LOVE dressing them up and displaying them, especially during the holidays. I even have custom made outfits that I've bought for my dolls. What is the point of keeping the clothes in the package if they're never going to be on the doll? So I support your opinion. It's because of your channel, MyFroggy, and a few others that I've embraced my "addiction" and am proud of my varied collection. One day I'll pass on and hope that someone gets my large collection of dolls and clothes and enjoys them as much as I do. The only down side is that it's a pain packing them all. LOL. I'm moving and have to pack them all up. Oh, I've been told to just sell them at a garage sale so that I won't have the hassle. I can buy them again. Nope. I did that once before when I was "young and foolish" and gave away all my vintage dolls. Never again. So it's packing over a thousand dolls. It'll be fun taking them out of their tubes when we move to the new place. :)

You covered a lot of good points. I recently started collecting again after more than 20 years. I ended up throwing out my older dolls because I lived in a very mouldy apartment for years, and I didn’t want those toxins around me once I realized the extent (some sources say you can’t destroy the mycotoxins, even if you get rid of the actual spores). Anyway, the point is that dolls are not like diamonds and gold; they will deteriorate and can suffer from environmental damage, even in the box. You can’t really keep them “new” forever. I haven’t unboxed all my recent acquisitions because I don’t have display cases yet, but eventually I think it will be less than 25% that stays in box.
As far as value, collector Jian Yang, who has over 12,000 dolls, recently said in an interview that, as an actual investor, his opinion is that dolls are one of the worst investments. People do seem to have found a lucrative thing with Disney and Integrity, but you have to put effort into obtaining those, and who knows what will happen in the long-term. There certainly are better ways to make money (that don’t take up space and are subject to flood, fire, etc.), if one has no interest in the dolls themselves.

I don't know where I fall lol. I unbox, restyle hair, straighten or swap clothes like in the case of RH and rebox them with plastic ties and everything. This method definitely started with MH and I just kept doing it. I do not care how other people enjoy their dolls, I agree its strange to judge.

I unbox my dolls, but I place them back in them sometimes (to protect them from dust or when I focus on other things or just because), which means I'm super careful when I open them in the first place so I can reuse the box. I don't have a lot of dolls, so it isn't an impractical system yet xD

I think putting them back in their boxes is really neat and a fantastic way to keep them perfect :) it’s part of why I keep some of the boxes that I do- there were a few monster high dolls that I wanted to open but also wanted the boxes so I compromised in that way hehe

I am a teen and well I do get bullied by my cousin for liking dolls, he shames me for liking them and buying them. He also says that I will never have a future because I play with/collect dolls. It makes me very sad hearing those things that why I resort to going online and meeting new people who have simular interests as me. I personally am collecting all of me and my brothers old bratz collection (Our mother gave me away while we grew up) and it pains me to think about it but, I just got one of my holy grail dolls, that I had when I was little and the memories of it just come flowing back to me, I loves dolls soo much! Dolls to me hold so many memories and so much inspiration and creativeness. Just holding the dolls, looking at them or just playing with them makes me soo happy. Dolls are very special to me, they got me through so many bad times in my life and I am so greatful to have them. Also I enjoy you're videos aswell, I really like these chatting videos especially, it's nice to cover some of these topics about the doll community. I had no idea Disney ""Father"" treated you like that! The irony of a grown man getting mad at someone just for deboxing a doll lol. Always wondered what the deal was with that beef.
I personally am a boxer or deboxer depending on the situation, but I definitely prefer to keep them in the box if they're collectors dolls. Safer from dust and grime, and I like the added display. But opening them is soooo satisfying too, and I own a few loose second hand dolls. So it really depends.

Idk that was a wild time 🤣 I might still have the live saved somewhere. I’m an in-box collector! I just honestly really loooove having them displayed without having to worry of dusts or breaking them. I don’t like to play with dolls either hence why I dont take them out of their boxes. I collect the disney limited edition dolls so they are extra special! they are LITERAL form of art! I like to treat them like they are paintings, just have them displayed and savour the effort that the disney artists have put together! while keeping it in pristine condition for years to come!
I unboxed a classic wendy doll, I tried to play with her just to see if I’m an unboxed collector haha but she just ended up lying somewhere in my room untouched. So my classic dolls are staying in their boxes as well. With that being said, I bought an unboxed Masquarade Megara and Traveler Elsa dolls, so I’ll have to find an acrylic box to display them in their full glory!

when i first started collecting dolls i took them all out of box because i have never been able to open a doll and display it and keep it in good condition without a child taking it or destroying it. so having my own place and a cool vanity with a barbie displayed made me so happy seeing her just remain perfectly intact. i like buying them in box and than i unbox them if the box is beat up. i tried to keep my new bratz in box but i couldent i had to play with them. but i do have some in box and i'm happy having both.

I do a mix of in-box and out of box collecting, but one question I asked myself that really helped me feel comfortable unboxing dolls was this regarding my OOB childhood monster high collection: “if I could snap my fingers and have them all back in their boxes, would I do it?” And the answer was no. I imagined them all lined up in their boxes, and it felt so lifeless compared to how they’re posed together in their display case. I think that personally, I would find shelves of boxed dolls to look joyless and commercial, whereas my shelves of unboxed dolls is personal and feels like little friends all over lol.
But I do like having a mix of both OOB and NIB.

i loove these videos from you so much ! it was watching you that i decided to actually start collecting limited edition dolls after years of wanting them, i always had the thoughts of unboxing them if i was to get them but told myself it would be "inconsiderate" to limited edition collectors due to the value and how sought after they are especially in box. But then watching you open the premiere designer dolls and slowly talking to myself into getting them i bit the bullet and started collecting and taking them out of the box! i will always get more enjoyment from the dolls out of box then i ever would in box, and its just so amazing to actually be able to pose them and feel them and do everything you couldn't with them in box. i never plan on selling any dolls out of box so at the end of the day i shouldn't care what others think of my collecting habits when it comes to in or out of box.

I remember being so taken aback because he was a vintage toy dealer and a collector himself so I always thought he'd care more about value but he just matter-of-factly told me that toys are meant to be played with. That's always stuck with me. I'm shocked my brain didn't pop that out in this video. I've definitely mentioned it before on the channel though.

When I started getting into dolls I was pretty picky with who I took out of the box. Not because I thought they were going to be worth a lot or anything, I just thought they looked way better in their box. The packaging was part of the display that I liked to look at. And there’s at least one that I regret taking out of the box because I just don’t think she looks at good just standing there on her stand. Also at the time I didn’t have the money to buy multiples of dolls. I was working two minimum wage jobs while also paying bills. Now that I have a better job I’m able to buy multiple. Especially rainbow high ones! (I love my two Kias!) rainbow high really got me out of my comfort zone when it came to my views and everything with my dolls. I fix their hair, change out their clothes. It’s so much fun!

I agree, I mean if you bought it it's yours and no matter how valuable and rare no one should tell you how to enjoy your dolls. If they don't like it they can just move on with their life like it doesn't affect them really so why even bother getting upset at it it's just sad.
I take mine out of the box. I am currently behind on unboxing some dolls though so atm I have a few boxes in my bedroom (11 if counted correctly) but just 3 of them are going to be kept that way. I don't judge in box collectors (as long as we respect eachothers decisions I'm good). However what makes me truly happy and brings me joy is to take them out of box. Hold them, pose them, take photos of them, and most importantly, restyle and customize them to put my own flare to them. In addition to dolls I also have a quite big collection of kpop albums and merch (lightsticks and such, and they kinda need their boxes to be able to display nicely) and I could never fit all of that + boxed dolls on my shelves, so much wasted space (that I don't even have to begin with). I also find it hard to arrange a lot of bigger boxes together in an aesthetically pleasing way.

Unless it's expensive collector dolls in fancy boxes or is very valuable, I unbox the vast majority of my playline dolls. They are almost like friends to me that help me cope with my lonliness of being an Aspie and make me feel less alone and more in control of something. I like holding them, appreciating their aesthetic beauty, looking at them, and adjusting their outfits/fixing their hair if it is needed. I always end up displaying them on stands if I have them and feel sorry for them if they don't have clothes on (I even feel empathy for them for some reason and tend to see my favorite dolls as friends/comfort objects rather than just inanimate objects). I can't help but treat one of my 18" Our Generation dolls as a child because he (I customized 'his' (the original doll was female with a gender ambiguous face and body) hair to be shorter and dressed him like my favorite Creepypasta character, Pirate Percy because the doll greatly resembles my headcannon for the character). And I feel that custom dolls almost always feel more like your personal child than other dolls do, since you worked so hard fo make them perfect and beautiful. But yeah, I'm an OOTB collector and like unboxing my dolls.

I always really enjoy your discussion videos! Collecting can be so different for everyone and it's always interesting to hear another perspective on it. The only boxes that I really hold onto myself are for my anime figures, because if I move or decide to sell them, they're a lot safer to ship/move in their original boxes. Interestingly enough, in Japan the condition of the boxes can greatly affect the price of a figure! I've gotten 80$ figures for half that simply because there was a few nicks in the box.

It’s crazy how people get so mad at others for opening up dolls! I buy anime figures and throwing away the boxes would drive some collectors nuts! I keep the more fragile figure boxes for future transportation, but figures like funko pops I can automatically trash them. It’s honestly silly how people value the packing to the point where they’d shame others who don’t value their packages the same. I can buy a figure/doll without their packaging as long as everything is there in good condition; however, I’d never buy a box packaging by itself lol! I watch your videos despite not really collecting fashion dolls since they come with too many outfits. I prefer dolls with 1 permanent outfit since I don’t play with them and just display only. I’m glad someone else also views this the same!!

Thank you so much for continuing this conversation and making this video. I definitely have to thank you for getting me out of that no unboxing mindset. I’m also a doll collector and I primarily collect the Disney designer dolls and the limited edition dolls. And I always had that mindset about not unboxing them because I felt I couldn’t, even though I really wanted to. Around this time was when I was so fortunate to find your channel and your unboxing video of the Premiere Ariel doll was what completely changed my mindset. Everything you said made so much sense. Like the story about your dad and the Star Wars toys form the 80s and 90s made me change my mind about the viewpoint of value and how supply and demand clearly influences that. But what really stuck with me was when you said that we have a limited time on earth and to just enjoy and do what you want. Now because of you I enjoy collecting without feeling restricted. Thank you!!

I was never a fan of dolls- I was the oldest and my little sister was big on them so anything gifted to me just automatically went to her. I recently started making avatars for VRChat and I remember seeing Monster High as a teen going “these are definitely going to be big.” I got my first one this week-! My boyfriend had taken me to look for one once before and I guess they stopped selling them. Recently I saw that my sister has gotten into MH and looked it up- they were back!! My bf took me to get my first doll at the age of 32 lol. I was in the isle trying to choose- only one stuck out to me (Lagoona in the tie dye shorts) and I was thinking back to childhood- thinking “I get it now.” It was oddly therapeutic. We were really poor so picking out a toy was something I can only remember ever having done a handful of times if that- childhood was stressful. I don’t remember wanting things badly- I remember “knowing better” than to ask or speak up.

It fascinates me the diverging ways of packaging collector dolls. To me, display boxes with the doll strapped right in feel like a definite Mattel/Barbie influence. And having a sturdy cardboard box not intended to be displayed with maybe two or three ties on the doll, with accessories bagged on the side, clearly intended to be unboxed you can trace back to the late 90's 16" collector doll boom with lines such as Gene Marshall, Tyler Wentworth etc. but can still be seen nowadays on IT dolls and the like.
I personally unbox everything and I tend to chop up display boxes and keep the art but I do keep all of my sturdy non-display collector doll boxes (they work great as storage, for both the original doll or others).

Honestly as a person who collects vintage barbies from the 80’s and 90’s you can get in box and out of the box for the same price. Based on what I have seen they average at like $20 which is what I would say is what they would sell for in stores today. It seems like a lot of people think that they are paying for the box rather than the thing in the box. I also collect Funko pops and people literally get so mad at people for taking them out of the box when they are the easiest thing to put back in the box lol.

Dude, "I'm gonna pee on this" is something my boyfriend says and jokes about all the time (I swear, he has the humour of a middle school boy). Made me laugh.
Also, I used to keep the MH boxes too! Then I left them in the crawl space and they got icky and mildewy and by then I was like, "You know, I put them down here and don't ever think about them, throw them out." I also lost a few books and my high school year book, but high school was a bad experience (my entire schooling was) so I just didn't care. I do, however, have the backing cards for my D2 dolls and display it with them.
Anyway, I leave some dolls in box and some I don't. Like, I personally don't unbox my Disney LE dolls, but I also don't care if other people do and I only have two (Elena and Queen Anna). In fact, I'm one of those that think it's cool and love that I get to see the whole doll through pictures and videos. It's really not my business and I'm not sure why people care so much. I actually almost felt bad when I took my custom Carla Delgado doll out of the box the commissioner made, but I purposely commissioned her with and extra outfit (that I designed) and wanted to put it (and others) on her. She has SO MANY pretty dresses now. And since I opened my other EoA dolls for the same reason (to dress up and display), I regret nothing. And I'll do the same when I get my custom Titanic doll because Rose belongs with my other Titanic stuff.
I think it's so cool your parents support your collection and get you dolls as presents! Mine haven't really cared about my interests since I was teenager (and not even really when I was a kid) and have no idea what I actually like or want or what I'm talking about when I talk about dolls and things (which is rare since they don't care and I can tell), so they just give me money instead. I remember being a kid and having to explain the Winx and Bratz dolls to my mum like, "I want THIS one." "But you have that one?" "No. This one is THIS character. That is THAT character." And she was always like, "Wut?"
(Also, "they're fighting over a BAG." Typical cats, amirite? Mine fight over PIPE CLEANERS.)

I love your attitude towards this topic. Most of my collection are bishoujo anime figures and 1/6 scale military and these were definitely made to be deboxed, for the former comes sheathed in unsightly plastic wrap to prevent paint transfer and the boxes of the latter often lack clear window panels anyway so if you want to SEE your figure, out of the box they go! As a grown man, I acquired the Disney Store LE Frozen 2 dolls for no other reason than I liked their look & that I wanted them. I'm almost 40 and by this point in life I frankly can't give a damn if this stigmatizes me in the eyes of a judgmental few with whom I want nothing to do anyway. 😊
I'm leaving my dolls in their boxes because I like their look packaged up, but I loved seeing other owners unbox theirs, show us the details not visible in the box and in one case even restyle Snow Queen Elsa's factory-stock hairdo to make it more movie accurate (I wouldn't be brave enough to do this!) Finally, I can't fathom why anyone would attack you for enjoying your collection in the way that maximizes your joy & life satisfaction; after all, isn't that the end goal of our hobbies? Reasons for getting mad at others' hobby choices won't matter in a 100 years, and life's just too short to waste it on disapproving of others.

  • @Solaria_collector

To me it depends a lot on the line! For example for Mattel winx dolls I would never open my nib dolls because of the emotional relationship with them and the nostalgia. I would always run to the doll aisle and look at the winx dolls for hours so the boxes are very nostalgic to me. So I usually have doubles of these dolls: one in box, one out.
For bratz on the other hand I don’t tend to keep them in box because I don’t have an emotional connection to them except very few that I strongly remember from my childhood.
For My Scene and also Bratz, I like to keep in box if the box is pretty, well organized, full with accessories and that I wouldn’t be able to display as I have a cat lol.
Since I started with winx, it was weird to me to open a nib doll but now I pretty much don’t care!

I collect dolls mostly out of box but I have a lot of in box ones. Usually with my favorite ones I buy one out of box or in box. I like having doubles especially if ones in box. You know if I see a doll brand new in box but the box is damaged and it’s cheaper than buying one out of box used I think I save a lot from that I honestly prefer unboxing a doll than buying a used one. I have a Tiktok and I post my dolls and I have many damaged dolls in the box and I asked people who should I unbox and people are like “omggg you’re ruining the price you could’ve made a lot!!”
I don’t think of selling my dolls because I did that and I regret it. I think it’s rude when people think they have the right to tell you what to do with your doll and your money.
One day you should make a video of talking about insuring your dolls, i have over 400 dolls and I don’t have them insured. Would love for someone to make a video about that and have a lot of information about that!
I’m 18 and I feel like older doll collectors judge younger doll collectors. Whenever I ask questions in a monster high group they think I have no knowledge of dolls and they give me a whole essay about it and tell me stuff I already knew and when I reply to them they think I’m coming off as rude. It happens to me all the time so I just stay quite 🥲

I love getting one in and out of box! It's really cool to experience a doll in both forms like that :D I have HEAVILY started doing this with Rainbow High but no other lines have me tempted in the same way strangely... I'm just a sucker for that holographic film I guess :P
That's so frustrating that the commenters do that :/ It's not about the price, it's about enjoying the doll. I've been right there with you. The few I've sold (even some doubles) I've regretted :( Some doubles from lots don't bug me too much but I had some I was pretty attached to but people would always hound me to sell them my doubles and I ended up folding at some point. Bleh.
I am VERY interested in insuring my collection but insurance for collectibles is a bit of a new market and the research I've done has been very hit and miss... some rave reviews and others are just not great. I would need to insure for market value and not what I paid (especially since I hardly have receipts for anything).
Ultimately I hope to just have an EXTREMELY foolproof room for the collection if I can get the money together. In whatever permanent place Brett and I settle once I have my masters degree I hope to have a flood/fireproofed room with security cameras. I think that's the better long term investment personally just because of how much insurance companies like to scam people. Especially since I have some more valuable stuff and prototypes this feels necessary... At least some fireproof display cases if nothing else.
And YES. DEFINITELY. Older collectors feel VERY entitled to everything and like to try and shame and dictate what the younger collectors do. This is a pattern and doesn't speak to all of them but it's VERY common unfortunately. I'm so sorry they treat you so dismissively- ew >:( I definitely never felt like I was respected or that my opinions mattered as they see younger collectors as bandwagoners generally but it's been ten years for me at this point and there's no sign of stopping bahaha

However, I do the same with Rainbow High, I buy duplicates of my favs. My dolls in the box are "investments" (not really lol) as in I probably will never sell them but if I'm broke then I'll make like $300 at least on them (specifically my MH ones). But yeah I do lowkey freak out when someone takes a collector doll of the box but I would never harass someone bc of it. Like I personally wouldn't take the Haunt Couture dolls out of the box bc they look soo cool in the coffins but I understand if people don't wanna.

I will never sell my dolls but I keep them in box because I'm very perfectionist and seeing them deteriorate out of them (I'm bad at upkeep) makes me stressed. I also like the feeling of seeing the boxes because it reminds me of walking in the toy store as a child, back when I could get dolls at the toy store and they weren't discontinued. As I run out of space and get older I think I will open them though. Also when I have more space and time to display them and care for them the way I want to.

I am new collecting dolls I open mine too because I wanna enjoy what I’ve bought if that’s customising or just simply washing the product out the hair

Yep :) I understand that many people enjoy them like art pieces and don’t need to touch them but that’s just not for me!

i have very similar thoughts tbh so this vid is pretty validating; i have more unboxed dolls than boxed ones cus i too love to hold them and dress them up and take pics of them to show my friends. im never reselling them so i dont really care about their supposed monetary value cus their value comes from the connection i have with them. also cus i mainly collect myscene dolls which have been discontinued for like a decade now, im not too picky about whether theyre in box or not cus more often than not theres loose stuff in the box so i just take them out cus leaving them in would just annoy me tbh lol. also yea unboxed dolls take up way less space which comes in handy when i have a small room and dont have my own place yet lol

Im 100% with you here I open every one of the dolls i get! I build clothing and the sets and backgrounds for displays and phots. also i have absolutely zero intention of re-selling them so who do they need to stay in box for? no one. as soon as i start accumulating the 17" limited edition disney dolls they will be removed from their boxes too!!!!!! if im not planning on removing the doll from the box i don't buy it.

I take 98% of my dolls out of the box but a large part of it actually is because I've found the boxes don't actually protect the dolls

I remember opening the Cerise Wolf doll I won off the Ever After High Instagram. I opened her and kept the box. I’m fact, I need to put her back on display.
