Love the reaction and commentary! Love all the additional info you added to my points. Don't know how I'm just seeing this 2 years later but glad I saw it!
I'd say the biggest thing is the beach. Have helped Soo many tourists with no idea starting to drown before surf Life saving even saw. If you can't swim well, just stay shallow and enjoy the water, don't go out in the swells
Sweet story: Security at Melbourne's Crown Casino wouldn't let my 80 year old mum into the casino without a valid ID - citing that she looked too young to drink. It made her blush with delight! A bit later, they sent her Champagne while she played the pokies.
I am an Aussie girl and I really loved this video. Australians are generally friendly and welcoming, but there are some cultural differences that you should be aware of. For example, it's customary to shake hands when meeting someone for the first time, and it's considered rude to arrive late for appointments or social events.🙂
I think that is universal between Australia and America. A matter of fact, in videos about Americans visiting England they warn you that the English might find that type of friendliness kind of weird.
I have lived in the US for nearly 40 years. I would discount anything Americans say about Australia or any other country. Many Americans I meet still believe that Australia and Austria are the same country in Europe.
Haha, the "pronounce the places correctly" bit reminds me so much of the Midlands in the UK where all the "cesters" are, like Leicester, Worcester, Gloucester, Towcester etc. First thing I learned: it's pronounced "Lester, Wooster, Gloster, Toaster".
There are two groups of life savers at bondi. Council paid lifeguards (blue,) and volunteer "clubbies" from the surfing club who are royal life saving accredited ,,(yellow and red) They actually dont work together except if the council pros see a volunteer needing help. Council work designated times and dates. Not in winter. Volunteers work weekends and public holidays
I had a green tree frog chilling out in my toilet bowl about 2 months ago. Luckily I haven't seen any snakes in my toilet yet. In saying that... I had seen a Red-Belly Black snake and an Eastern Browns on my property a few years ago. These happened during the dry spell (a few years ago) when there were no crops being grown by the local farmers and this had led to rodents searching for food in the residential area of our little town. My mouse trap had caught 21 mice in the space of 5 days back then.
Tipping. Something people tend to leave out when explaining tipping isn’t common in Australia is that some places _don’t allow_ tips at all. Employees just aren’t allowed to accept them. Although I remember once being told to just redirect someone to donations if they wanted to tip. Donations to various charities at the checkout is common in Australia Eg. Guide Dogs, Cancer, Children Hospital or Royal Flying Doctor type charities etc. Often the donations used to be from people’s loose change and now when paying via card self serve checkouts may ask you if you want to make a donation to x charity by rounding up to the nearest dollar or donating a dollar.
Yesss. I’ve seen a few pass or get taken. I’ve been taken on purpose and by mistake scary af And I can swim surf beaches, for fitness. So learning how to get out of a rip safely is so important. Try and lay on ur back. Depending speed. Don’t ever fight a rip. Go with u. People panic and try and swim into it. They get exhausted and freak out coz sometimes it can feel like an escalator 😑 slow means the edge. Motion is key. Once it slows down u can swim across it. Stay safe x

I lived on the road for 6 years. After all of the scary videos about everything in Australia wanting to fuck spiders, it was amazing to me how many back packers would turn up after dark and go straight to walking through the bush / long grass looking for wood to start a fire. I reckon I ended up saving around 100 of them just by telling them to come cook and drink around my already burning fire lmao Maybe make a video about safety tips for visiting aussie outback. Cheer big ears
Hearing your suggestions about roadtrips in Australia makes me wanna cry! I spent seven months basically locked up in Darwin last year cause I arrived just at the same time as the pandemic started.. hope i will be able to come back and see some of the beautiful places Australia has to offer apart from beaches I can't swim in..
There is a lot to see! Cradle Mountain in Tasmania, also whilst you’re there, visit Salamanca Markets in Hobart. West coast of Tasmania: the vintage rail at Queenstown, Strahan (tree ferns, moss, quirky staff, delicious food, Galley Museum at Queenstown a must see). In Victoria: Holy Dooley you are spoilt for choice … the Great Ocean Road, amazing. New South Wales & Victoria… travel along the Snowy mountains, cave systems, views, hiking, snow skiing and loads more. Queensland… well it is aptly named Queens’ land… weather: pleasant (not too hot, not too cold… it’s just right… well, most of the time lol) viewing the Great Barrier Reef, whether by plane, boat or swimming is a must. South Australia… Adelaide, the city of churches, Coober Pedy… that’s opal country! Northern Territory, Katherine Gorge, crawling with crocodiles (species both small and deadly)… in most of the waterways, rivers, wetlands, estuaries and thereabouts! Swim in crystal clear Mataranka Springs, enticingly warm, bliss! Western Australia, pearls, engaging and welcoming Quokkas, playful dolphins at Monkey Mia. Mining history at Kalgoorlie (my late great Uncle tried his luck prospecting for gold there). The Australian Capital Territory, Canberra…our Nations’ capital, Museums… in particular Military is worth a look see. I love this country, my place of birth, and recommend overseas visitors to see and experience it.
Hahaha I have tried your trick Pete. I usually get sauce after my order and it works perfectly ;) By the way, important thing to know for anyone coming to Melbourne, do not trust the weather forcast. Normal rain can turn into heavy storm. Even if it is sunny day take your rain jacket and be ready for rain coming horizontally due to wind😃 . Is there an english word explaining this sort of rain?
Also good to get used to layering just in general around the country, a shirt + jumper and maybe a jacket during winter is a good combo for layering up or down throughout the day as it warms up or cools down. Normally I stick to a shirt + jacket combo but the latest cold snap with wind chill has me grabbing a jacket as well as my usual jumper.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned it. But I know QLD ask for photo ID as some places will scan your ID for records. So if you cause damage or involved in a fight and flee. They will look through the documents and forward onto the police. I don't know about other states but Qld does do this. So it's not so much as checking age but maintaining records and easy identification should issues arise. They also may have a little camera at the door that also takes your photo and saved with the scan of drivers license or passport etc.
Licensed clubs will do this. Its a complex tax issue for visitors v members and their guests. Many venues ae also linked using a license makes it consistent. So if you are removed from one you wont enter others. If you are accused of an offence (eg groping, fighting) the cops will have your id.
Thank you for your work, learned so many interesting facts already, as I am moving down under in 2 weeks. I feel prepared haha but please keep posting 😁 I'll keep watching Best wishes from germany
@@AussieEnglishPodcast I think maybe the western part. I'd be swearing every time I wanted a cold Dr Pepper but didn't have 5 hours (or more)to go to the store.
you probably should've pointed out that if you go in the water where there is crocodiles your odds of dying increase exponentially. you still need to follow the laws of nature and not just brush if off as statistically improbable.
@@JamesPrpich you don't swim or go near the waters edge anywhere that there could be a saltwater crocodile they actively hunt and eat humans. but there are crocodile free places within their range where you can swim. but you have to be 100% sure a crocodile cannot get in there. eg a river on top of an escarpment they can't climb or a crystal clear waterhole where a croc can't hide or get into without being seen first.
If your going camping you 100% need to be careful of snakes all of this info is for visiting the city…. It bugs me that you can watch a video saying it’s very unlikely you’ll see a kangaroo in the wild….. depends where you visit! lol Driving along the beaches in QLD you’ll see 10-15 kangaroos just out in the open. Hiking in summer in Queensland your very likely to see a snake but most are not fond of people. Some are curious and will take a look at you before leaving and some will charge at you :) Snakes in the toilet is a common occurrence north QLD in rural areas and down to north NSW. They are attracted to the frogs. And frogs are attracted to the water. One of the places we go camping has signs all over the toilet block to close the toilet lid to stop the snakes.
@@AussieEnglishPodcast I think it related with cultural feuteres. Ukranian people like free gifts as like crazy. For example on some festivals if you see free food or other free gifts big crowd be arond this place. Because need to take to yourself ( and bigger bigger) for children, friends etc. And it ok then all of them stay at home. Even plastic bags in supermarket have price. Because people came to supermarket took a pack of bags and left.
Regarding speed limits; in my experience living in and around ACT & NSW - some states and regions of states are more aggro about keeping to the speed limits (been a decade but last time I was riding shotgun down to a con in Melb EVERYONE was doing 5km/h *under* the posted limit once we crossed the border to Vic), whilst other states and regions of states are a smidge more lax about limits (here in the Riverina, NSW - as long as you're *safely* keeping a constant speed and are out on the 100km/h zones, most cops (who *aren't* parked in a mobile speed trap) that you pass on the open road won't ping and chase you if you're doing about 105-110km/h, or if you're doing 120-140 as part of *overtaking* someone whose speed isn't constant, as long as you get back down to the 105-110km/h zone and stay there until nearing a slower zone).
Victorian speed limits have no safe margin but in most other states you are unlikely to be caught until you are more than 10% over the limit. Note I said unlikely not guaranteed.
When I first came to OZ I bitched a lot about the sauce situation but I got used to it now and went the opposite. Even when they give you a pack of tomato sauce with your pie or sausage roll, I don't use it. I also don't eat potato chips with tomato sauce (or ketchup, as some people say). I liked the sweet potato fries with aioli though.
i live in Darwin and have had a few green frogs in the loo , my daughter screamed so loud that one jumped on her lol she was 9 years old, OMG i still laugh lol and that was over 30 years ago she still not impressed lol
Mob is what our aboriginals people use for tribe, family, race. It’s a gorgeous culture x u should look up aboriginal tick-tock. Some interesting and intelligent funny creators. Really respectful x
About the "driving on the wrong side of the road": this is serious, folks! I'm german. 1st time I drove "on the other side" was London City and Birmingham City. That's easy! 'Cause you have lots of traffic. The dangerous thing is, when turning into the wrong lane somewhere in the countryside. With no traffic around you. And you have been driving for either miles or kilometers with no problem. And than are facing oncoming traffic. Think about this. All of the time. Ride safe!
now another comment from me Australia is the only place I have seen signs warning not to be rude to the staff. Also Australia is the ONLY place where there is a designated spot for uber to pick you up after the concert AND the security will check on the wellbeing of the lovely lady you are in the car with. Happened to me in Queensland and as much as I support the idea I truly wonder about the story behind it. Actually my Oz gf explained to me that leaving your lady partner alone in a pub is dangerous (which was new to me being Polish) but at least in case of a pub brawl her 65 kg of ex army Sheila is actually a bigger threat than my 1.90m/105 kg of Slavic muscle.
Plus, in addition to the establishment...the bar attendant will get fined. It's on the person who serves an underager also. Unless that's been changed (in NSW).
In America there is an unwritten rule that you can go 5-10 MPH over the speed limit on interstate freeways before a patrolman will stop you. In urban areas that will shrink to less than 5MPH allowance, the Aussie 3 KPH rule, which is less than 2 MPH is shockingly strict. Americans are as likely to say "swear" as "cuss or "curse". Americans seem to be easier going on tolerating divergent pronunciations than Australians are, if an obvious foreigner mispronounced a place name I would not be irritated. For some reason I naturally call it Melburn, rather than Mel-born, I'm not sure why, LOL! I like this kids video much better than his "hate about Australia" video, his other one was pretty cringy.
That looked like a brown tree snake in the loo. Backfanged but not considered overly dangerous. I actually shared a house with a guy that came off his horse and was found dead on his parents property. Its not the normal driving that would worry me, it is the emergency situation that arises where I would react like I was driving at home and swing the wrong way.
How i explain it is mel-burn cos that's how it's said not mel-born tho I can understand with whole Melbourne cos it does look like it's said melborn ❤❤❤❤❤
G'day Pete. Your channel is one of my best channels and I've learnt a lot from you not only Oz English but also lots of living and cultural things here in Aus. Today in a meeting, I've heard a new word "meat on the bones". Is it Oz? and what is it mean? I beleive the speaker was meanning (something in your hand or so) I'm not sure :)
Things you must know. Bondi beach is not impressive, or nice in any way. I'll compromise the weather for Tasmania to live in a place that has probably five beaches better than Bondi, within view, without thousands of people with a maximum drive of about an hour.
In NSW, the only valid ID is a drivers licence or a photo card. Anyone without a drivers licence can get a photo card from Services NSW. Visitors to Australia can use their passport but NSW residents have to use the licence or the photo card. Student IDs or any other cards are not acceptable.
The way we live here as Aussies know it isn’t weird, it’s just different. Speeding, drinking and wanting our ID ID for OUR safety, too many die on the roads speeding. I don’t swear at all, except once, my son, for fun, forced me to say the F word, eventually I did, he said Yes and cracked up laughing and said WTG mum lol. I read about Americans being under paid thus tips. Here, I’ve tipped twice. I’ve never seen a snake or spider in a loo and I’m 67. Yes we have a bad rep for spiders snakes being everywhere here, ready to kill us from many Americans, maybe we started the joke, I have no idea. We tend to enjoy stirring people, (it’s our Aussie or as I tell many of my American on line friends it’s pronounced Ozzie) humour not to frighten. lol I pronounce Melbourne Mel/bn lol . Dam, now they’ll know we’ve been pulling their leg all the time joking. Now what do we do? 😂
If this guy come to Brazil, especially in São Paulo, he would freak out with redlight cameras or speed cameras LoL but from my part, I don't have problems with that cuz I know where is them positions, so I can drive fast.
it's not common in colder areas of australia 🤣 come to the northern suburbs and northern eastern melbourne in summer lot of eastern brown snake just as much as you will get in the gold coast
The Australian government provides social and disability benefits to eligible individuals, including income support payments, healthcare concessions, and mobility allowances. The system aims to provide a safety net for those who are unable to support themselves financially. The eligibility criteria can vary, and seeking professional advice is recommended. Hope this was helpful to you!😇
@@AussieEnglishPodcast oh i see. cause I was thinking u are the only UA-camr from ACT. Im in Auckland NZ now, was studied in university of Canberra for 4 years. and we are planning to move back to Canberra after Covid.
@@AussieEnglishPodcast definitely after the whole pandemic. then, my wife will apply some jobs. i would say end of next year maybe. the Covid is more serious than I think. The travel bubble only one way, which is kiwi can go to oz from 1/11. but not return. we are still suffering it. more than 150 new cases per day.
OK, if you don't like the way people pronounce things, try spelling them right. If you don't want a speeding ticket, just don't speed no matter the country you are in.
When it comes to mispronunciation, I think Australian English is not good too. Take to look at the way Aussy people pronounce "A" like in Mate and Take or "you" which becomes ya and a lot more.
Never kiss a bloke above 35 years of age, these have bad breath. Fifteen thousand Sheelars perish in Bondi, during a two-year period, there was no sex trade.
Aussies don't like all the police either, They took peoples guns away in the 90s And now we have a police state. People in Melbourne will know what I mean.
DON'T come to Australia unless you are prepared to have your freedoms restricted by the regimes in power at the state level, and be prepared for the "rules" to cahnge whenever they feel like removing more freedoms.
Only idiots think having things in place for your own and other people's saftey is a restriction of freedom. If you don't like looking out for others then maybe just don't live here.
Americans pronounce words the way they are spelled and that’s why American English is so much easier to understand and learn. Australian English, which is like regional British English, is heavily influenced by the French language so spelling and pronunciation don’t correspond half the time!… Now Aussies mostly mispronounce Los Angeles among many other U.S. cities but most Americans don’t care because Americans don’t have an inferiority complex!… I have noticed that people on the top of the food chain don’t get offended easily!

Ur a great rep for us… mate. Great content x
Love your videos, mate!
Cheers, Nikhil! Where're you from, mate?
@@AussieEnglishPodcast I'm from Virginia, in the USA!
@@slicknik007 Wow! Very cool! So not here to learn English? Hehe more interested in the AUS vs US side of things?
@@AussieEnglishPodcast haha yes sir!
Tell more about the mining industry! Oz has a biggest mining industry in the world. More about the opals! 🙂
Hahaha I just made two episodes on Aussie Gold Hunters and Aussie Opal Hunters. Stay tuned :D
Ride safe!
l love he's English because it's so slang
now another comment from me
Australia is the only place I have seen signs warning not to be rude to the staff.
Hi, mate's! while they are considering my documents for visa, I began to forget the English language.
Keep up the hard work studying, mate. You'll get it back :D
So in Gladstone Queensland I had a snake in my mail box in town less than 1km from the main shopping centre
I swear when im comfortable.. Banter. When professional it’s exhausting 😅
haha you love Tristan's video's 😂
Please, guys, does someone knows what ''MOB'' means?
Group. You mob = you plural/group of people.
@@AussieEnglishPodcast I'm just new here. I love your channel. Thanks, mate!!

Hey mate, thanks so much for the kind words. Yeah, we'd use that here :D
Thanks heaps
Any time, mate!
Things you must know. Bondi beach is not impressive, or nice in any way. I'll compromise the weather for Tasmania to live in a place that has probably five beaches better than Bondi, within view, without thousands of people with a maximum drive of about an hour.
Dont forget about them drop bears, They love getting people that have just left the toilet. ;) lol
We tend to enjoy stirring people, (it’s our Aussie or as I tell many of my American on line friends it’s pronounced Ozzie) humour not to frighten. lol
I pronounce Melbourne Mel/bn lol . Dam, now they’ll know we’ve been pulling their leg all the time joking. Now what do we do? 😂
I went to uni in the states and lived and worked there for like 15 years and biggest, most hideous spiders I’ve ever seen were over there
In the US?
@@AussieEnglishPodcast one giant hairy spider I saw INDOORS in Belleville, Illinois and the other ALSO INDOORS was in hillsboro Oregon 😳
I work as a DJ & know several clubs where everyone has to show id to enter. Grandma would be refused entry if she didn't show id.
Make a video about Roman Krznaric.
I’m 61 and haven’t had a speeding fine in over 40 year lol . It’s not that hard :)

And we have gst
If this guy come to Brazil, especially in São Paulo, he would freak out with redlight cameras or speed cameras LoL but from my part, I don't have problems with that cuz I know where is them positions, so I can drive fast.
it's not common in colder areas of australia 🤣
come to the northern suburbs and northern eastern melbourne in summer lot of eastern brown snake just as much as you will get in the gold coast
How do you pronounce koala? Ive been saying it “kwala”
Ko alla
Hello from England I would like to know what is the situation with social and disability benefits in Australia please
The Australian government provides social and disability benefits to eligible individuals, including income support payments, healthcare concessions, and mobility allowances. The system aims to provide a safety net for those who are unable to support themselves financially. The eligibility criteria can vary, and seeking professional advice is recommended. Hope this was helpful to you!😇
You wont get it. Its for people who have been resident taxpayers 10+ years
"Poisonous snakes"? Does he plan on eating them?
Don't bother with all that hassle tipping out your boots, just go bare foot everywhere.....no worries
What is the solution for the terrible internet condition in Australia?
Its not if you choose beyond the cheapest option. That is the common reason. Its tightarses who whine
I might need to get my ears checked becuase how you were saying Melbourne sounded exactly how he was saying not to say it???
I remember u are from Canberra

Snakes in the toilet happen in rural Texas, but most of them are little grass snakes
New fear ulocked at the toilet xD
OK, if you don't like the way people pronounce things, try spelling them right. If you don't want a speeding ticket, just don't speed no matter the country you are in.
3:26 xddd
Never had a snake in the loo ……. Frogs yes …… snakes no ….!!!!!
When it comes to mispronunciation, I think Australian English is not good too. Take to look at the way Aussy people pronounce "A" like in Mate and Take or "you" which becomes ya and a lot more.
Yesss been waiting for someone to say this 😆 Australian English is one of the laziest English in the world haha
Haha the rest of the world pronounce it incorrectly. We nailed it :D
Mate, us Aussies are correct so get stuffed. Tschuess aus Australien.
Pfff
Pfffff :P
Ya forgot bout paralysis tick/s.....can kill dogs...get it hikin in long grass (no, not that grass)
Yeah, very true. Though fortunately where I'm from I don't have to worry about that horror show.
Also check your body parts for ticks . after the bush walks ( specially undies ) 😖

We wouldn't be Americans if we didn't mispronounced everything 😉
Haha don't panic, I'm sure Aussies are like that when we go to the US :D
ok .. Dont come .. please
Never kiss a bloke above 35 years of age, these have bad breath. Fifteen thousand Sheelars perish in Bondi, during a two-year period, there was no sex trade.
The joke about our animals is so untrue it is annoying. Many, many more people die from drowning than animals.
Aussies don't like all the police either,
They took peoples guns away in the 90s
And now we have a police state.
People in Melbourne will know what I mean.
The only people who think that are idiots.
Nutters say that. Some weapons that are unnecessary and unsafe were bought from owners. Genuine use is still permitted with approval
Excellen said creatve. Unnecessary? Who decide this? You?
Tristan shares a lot of his own opinions and doesn 't fact check be4fore he genaralises about Australia and Ausralians.
DON'T come to Australia unless you are prepared to have your freedoms restricted by the regimes in power at the state level, and be prepared for the "rules" to cahnge whenever they feel like removing more freedoms.
hahaha are you American?
Only idiots think having things in place for your own and other people's saftey is a restriction of freedom. If you don't like looking out for others then maybe just don't live here.
Just keep your car dirty and have the number plate covered by mud.
Americans pronounce words the way they are spelled and that’s why American English is so much easier to understand and learn. Australian English, which is like regional British English, is heavily influenced by the French language so spelling and pronunciation don’t correspond half the time!… Now Aussies mostly mispronounce Los Angeles among many other U.S. cities but most Americans don’t care because Americans don’t have an inferiority complex!… I have noticed that people on the top of the food chain don’t get offended easily!
jeez mate , if hotdogs and waffles drenched in syrup are the top of the food chain, the bottom must be pretty dire.
WWhat??
