I've just recently encountered your content and am utterly inspired - have been somewhat devouring it haha while I build an overall understanding of this approach. I'm also a tad overwhelmed, but only have a 1 and 3 year old so am taking solace in the fact that I have plenty of time to go slowly, little change by little change. Anyway, am I right in thinking I can interpret this video as what I can do to prepare for formal schooling over the next 2-3 years? Or is there a different trajectory you would reccommend for where I'm at? Specifically would find it helpful if you could suggest a concrete first step (or a few steps) to start with first. Im thinking maybe working on obedience is maybe most foundational? Im very much at ground zero right now haha.
Lauren, welcome! So happy to have you here. You do have plenty of time and yet, I do think starting when your littles are, well, little is the best time to start! This is as much of a re-education for you as it is an education for them. You can definitely pull the questions and principles from this for your season now. I recommend reading classical pedagogy books, Mason for herself, and then actually reading the "great books" instead of reading about them. Out-of-doors time and good habits are the focus for the little ones during this season! No pressure but I do also have Common House which is where all my best resources are. Guides, templates, courses on habit training, Mason's 20 principles, summer planning; resources for the literary life, cultivating a "classical" home, etc. We're about 450 strong-with moms around the world-and we're all learning to make truth, goodness, and beauty something that forms all parts of our children (and ourselves). @@laurensklenars2608 start with John Senior’s 1,000 and start wherever you haven’t read-even if that’s the beginning with Pooh and Frog and Toad (read them aloud!)! We do have conversations like that one (living books for certain things) in Common House! You don’t want to be overly on-the-nose with your child’s literary life (They can sniff out what you’re doing!) but we do discuss the living books that plant seeds in beautiful ways-which may take time but do bring life to the mind and imagination/heart!

I'm from Southern Africa and due to currency conversions, it would fit me better if I have an once off yearly subscription upfront, than a variable-due-to-currency-fluctuations monthly payment. Interesting! In my video about building a dream space, I throw out the idea that classical education is "blurred" in our ordinary life. We do many of the same things as formal school that also fill our ordinary leisure and rest time! Why not have 12 months of adventure, habits, read aloud, rest, cooking, sewing, writing lovely letters, and math? We certainly do! But in certain parts of the year, they take different forms---kind of like seasons.
Loved this! I’m not a huge planner or particularly “type a” but you really have some great ideas for being more intentional with free time this summer. Random question: I tend to write things down and then basically never look at that list again - where do you keep your summer plans so you are sure to actually look at it during the summer? In a notebook?
I think this idea is helpful to all the personalities. I tend to be a Type A in planning and a Type B in action; is that a thing? Ha! Basically, I like to know the path I'm on and then walk it at a human-pace which means I won't nail everything but will ensure a "good life". I start on paper with printed empty calendars for May through August. I like to be able to see everything at once on the table. Once that's fully planned, I'll stick them all in a page protector on the fridge (with the current month displayed at the front) and rotate them out throughout the summer.

At the beginning of last year I made a bunch of color coded charts - stuck them in a binder, and then I think that was the last time I saw them! So I think I need to display all of my “grand plans” if I’m really serious about sticking to them.

Still persons! Same curricula! But I run them before lessons, let them build and move during certain lessons, and let them jump up and down on a trampoline while I read aloud. Movers gotta move.

May I ask are you catholic? If you are not did you hold any convictions supporting the CMEC with the creator being catholic? I am not worried about catholic influence but I am worried about "funding/supporting" something I believe is a different gospel then christian. For example I didn't want to fund TGAB because she is mormon. Nothing against anyone it's more about a personal thought. I was just curious on your thoughts?
I'm not Catholic but I did not have any issues about supporting the CMEC. They're incredibly faithful students of Mason, using her PNEU guides to form their own programs and always protecting the philosophy. I would never encourage anyone to sin against their conscience. Still, I will add-for your consideration-that the Catholic classical tradition is rich and many of the best resources are from those creators. It may be a question that pops up often for you if you stay in the classical Mason world!
