The current rate of year over year improvements in display tech is exciting. After nearly 2 decades of just "lcd again but number bigger", we are finally seeing displays getting really good, and better every year. Hopefully the pace doesn't slow down. Still improvements to be made before we hit true endgame though: -Discrete Red Green and Blue sub pixels rather than shared (most oleds share some sub pixels) -BFI standard (and CRT beam emulation) that removes need to double bandwidth or have tradeoffs -improved longevity (possibly through electro emissive QD?)
I don’t know if CRT beams can be emulated, since CRT is fundamentally an analog technology (which eliminates processing time and latency by taking in the whole analog input) and OLED and most other LED displays are digital technologies (which need to convert analog signals to digital, which adds extra processing time that gets output as latency).
Agreed the last few years for tech in general have been pretty good. AMD putting out bangers on the CPUs side. Apples Arm chips going crazy in the note book/tablet sector Sony cameras Samsung/LG displays. Etc All going so crazy lately
@@fujinshu Yes you can't eliminate processing time on digital and it will stay almost same even if we progress (because cpu speed and game's demand both increase proportionally). Still if you burn cash and get best from market. You won't care because its already so damn fast.

Seems like everyone has been on it except me, but I wanted the best of the best I won't be buying a new monitor after this one until a new panel tech that isn't OLED that has no burn-in comes out.
@The display’s control board is what’s adding extra latency, since it needs more power to convert analog to digital fast enough, which is why retro games aren’t as great on flat-panel displays compared to CRTs.

Not as crisp as a macbook with 256 ppi. Though, it’s MiniLED and it has ghosting because it has so many dimming zones. But there’s also a 264 ppi dual-OLED iPad Pro.

I've been watching Jake's videos for years. Recently saw an add for the new smaller or different LTT backpack on Jake's most recent Bright Sun Travels video.
I see an internal power supply and I'm automatically happy. I absolutely hate wall warts on monitors. Still, I need something with mini-LED since I don't want to worry about retention while working, but more so... I don't care for the subpixel layout and I deal with a lot of text. If I were just gaming, OLED would be perfect, but I really wish there were more mini-LED options.
Have fun replacing the entire monitor when a power spike (or just age) takes out the internal PSU when you could have just ordered a new PSU + cable. Image retention is a non-factor, see the videos/articles they referred to, especially Hardware Unboxed's couple of progress reports. I'm writing this on an Alienware AW3225QF, and the only "issue" is a short display refresh cycle every 4 hours (recommended interval, not strictly enforced). Subpixel layout doesn't matter either because of the PPI; text is totally fine. Even the Display Compression is not detectable for human eyes. The only issues will be programs that can't handle the high DPI (e.g. classic Win32 controls being too small to read) and need a Windows override to scale correctly; your graphics card not being able to render that many pixels without tricks like DLSS; and switching back to a different computer that has a lesser display.
@@philgoodinc2 I'm sorry my opinion has impacted your confirmation bias. Chromatic fringing is a well known issue with OLED's and reading text and you don't need super human eyes to notice it. You probably won't if you're not spending a good portion of your time dealing with text, but I do on my primary system and I notice the fringing. Even if that were the non-issue you pretend it to be, burn in is still an issue and my primary system spends a lot of time running static elements on the screen. OLED's are great, but they're not necessarily the best for a productivity setup that you game on occasionally.
@@shinyhappyrem8728 What an outlandish scenario. I assume your TV is powered using a wall wart then? Because it would subject to the same issue. That being said, it's such an edge case it's not even funny. You know how many TV's or monitors I've had to replace due to power spikes? None... and all of my monitors, except one, have internal power supplies. My primary system is on a UPS, so it has surge protection and it protects against a more likely culprit to kill electronics... voltage dips. Won't save you from a lighting strike, but nothing really can guarantee it can stop those, especially not any consumer level surge protection. I have a few very early LCD monitors with internal power supplies... they both still work perfectly. You're worrying about crap that is a nothing burger. Funny that you bring up Hardware Unboxed as a reference that burn in is a non issue, when they've clearly taken the stance that OLED's are less than ideal for productivity setups due to the sub pixel layout. And perhaps burn in is becoming less of an issue. However, with how long I have static elements on the screen, I don't want to have to deal with it on my primary system, that I mostly use for work and game on occasionally. Mini-LED is a very slight compromise with none of the downsides for that system. My TV is an OLED, which I have a gaming PC on. My other systems don't have OLED's because they're testing stations and I don't care if they look perfect or not. I'm not opposed to OLED, just that it doesn't work for what I need on this system. OLED isn't the best solution for everything. As to display compression... I don't know why you're bringing this up as I never mentioned it.
@@rickster255 I bought a $1800 ASUS flagship 4K monitor in 2015 and it was DOA. Well yeh, what did you expect when it literally says on their monitor warranty policy page "a typical LCD monitor can have between 3 to 5 defective bright or dark pixels, which are considered acceptable, meaning they won't be considered a warranty issue"
@ yeah but dead pixels out of the box??? That’s unreal! Can’t even resell it later, because who in the right mind would buy a monitor with dead pixels? Never buying Asus monitors ever again
I'm confused why everyone says this monitor is the first at all this stuff. I think it's only the first to do it in 27 inch, but panels for this same spec have been around in like 32 inch. Doesn't the 7900 xtx support DP 2.1 UHBR 20? I mean it prob won't run the display at 240hz but do they already know the 5090 will?
Yes, I have gigabyte 32" fo32u2p and it has 240hz 4k with DP2.1 UHBR20, I just dont have a GPU that can output that and DSC looks incredibly good in my opinion
With monitors, all "firsts" are a combination of factors. Like, we've had 8k panels for years, but that doesn't mean an 8k360hz panel wouldn't be crazy. I know most people (myself included) prefer larger monitors, but for the hardest corest gamers, 27" is considered the ideal size because it requires minimal head/neck movement and doesn't require a ton of attention on your peripheral vision. That's why (for pros and people influenced by pros) this monitor is kind of a big deal. And no, the XTX doesn't have UHBR20 (80gbps), it has UHBR13.5 (54gbps). From what I understand, people only learned that through experimentation as AMD doesn't have it in any specs I could find.
W7800 and W7900 are the only ones with DP 2.1 UHBR 20 at the moment, and those aren't "consumer cards". I have a FO32U2P with 4k 240hz DP 2.1, currently running with DSC on a 3080ti, not really an issue (though I hope the 5xxx series or RDNA 4 have UHBR 20, we should know for sure in a few days)

Your short segment on the drawbacks of different LCD technologies makes me wish someone had done more with dual-layer LCD technology. I know OLED is getting better and brighter, and that micro LED is around the corner, but a dual layer LCD could provide a pretty nice balance of price and performance. Start with a bright full array local dimming mini-LED backlight, then use a VA panel for the "light control" layer for its greater contrast and refresh rate, and finally a quantum dot enhanced IPS panel for the color layer with its wider viewing angles. The IPS panel would have native 4k resolution and be able to operate at 4k@120Hz or 1080p@240Hz, while the VA panel would have a 1080p native resolution and operate at 240Hz or 480Hz to allow for better motion clarity with "backlight" strobing using the VA panel. Theoretically such a display could achieve nearly the same black levels as OLED while getting many times brighter. OLED would probably still have the edge in motion clarity, but this dual layer LCD should be less expensive and the difference would likely be hard to tell in real world gameplay.

-improved longevity (possibly through electro emissive QD?)
Apples Arm chips going crazy in the note book/tablet sector
Sony cameras

All going so crazy lately
@@fujinshu Yes you can't eliminate processing time on digital and it will stay almost same even if we progress (because cpu speed and game's demand both increase proportionally). Still if you burn cash and get best from market. You won't care because its already so damn fast.

I won't be buying a new monitor after this one until a new panel tech that isn't OLED that has no burn-in comes out.
@The display’s control board is what’s adding extra latency, since it needs more power to convert analog to digital fast enough, which is why retro games aren’t as great on flat-panel displays compared to CRTs.

And 4K has multiple definitions, 3840x2160 is better called as UHD instead of 4K. Better to just stick to standard terminology - FHD, QHD, UHD. I guess 4K and 2K (or 2.5K) is more catchy though and easier to communicate to viewers though

You must have cybernetic eyes to be able to detect subpixel layout on a 27" 4k Monitor at regular viewing distance. Jealous!
If you want a really nice wall wart, checkout what ifi has on offer.

@@your_average_cultured_dude I feel like it’s still 2021….can you believe that one virus going around the world was 5 YEARS AGO, crazy how fast time flies.
How much did it cost ASUS to have this video made for the main channel instead of ShortCircuit?
I got myself a 1440p qd oled 240hz for 400$ last month. I used to use a 170hz 1440p led display and the new qd-oled Is a game changer. When I watch videos now I can clearly see every detail in the video compared to the led. Only downside is I am recommended to pixel refresh every 4 hours to reduce burn in and increase the longevity of the display (~10 minutes shut down every 4 hours).
Bought a scepter they advertised, but 6 dead pixels in one dot, 4k 27" for free
2:41 stop holding it that way!!
@surenderpalu7 theres plastic over it lol i know wym tho I don't even hold it like that with the plastic seal on it still
It's Linus... You're lucky he's not dropping it
@@Spookiiee72 facts lmao
He didn't respect the package
8:59 we can tell linus
And he's literally playing on the best gpu and a monitor better than any available
I’m on an LG c4 @144hz 4K and it’s freakin bonkers. Gamer for 35 years and I never thought games would look the way they do. My first gaming computer was an apple II my dad gave me. First gaming PC was a 486/DX 33mhz(upgraded to a DX2 66mhz(my first ever cpu upgrade). I only game in native 4K on my primary rig: OC 13900KS/OC 4090/and 32GB 7000mhz. I have a PS5 and Xbox series X on the same screen and they have prehistoric graphics compared to the PC.
I hope Im a gamer in 10 years so I can buy this monitor and a good enough pc
9800x3d (check), 5090 (still waiting with fingers crossed i get it before the scalpers), this monitor (maybe after i pay off my debt on the other 2)
Hehe i can see someone else being as naughty as i am :)
I think it would add some value to show some of this motion clarity with a slow motion camera capture and compare it with other monitors
Rely wish big "influencers" would "influence" their big sponsors to treat there customers better.
ASUS has the worst reputation for customer support and warranties.
@@jameskeenan9308 I think that's a big issue mainly in the US, don't know about Europe, but in the middle east, retailers deal with the warranty claim and contact the local Asus supplier and get it sorted out, governments here are super strict and don't play around.
They do that quite a bit.
I just hope that when they do it, it’s done in a way that is tempered. Too often there is a toxic negative energy that gets stirred up by being a consumer advocate. There’s totally a way to do that with full integrity and an even keel. Too many influencer personalities get totally tilted and energetically set a bad example.
1440p is not 2k and the guy who rightfully complained that RAM should be marketed with megatransfers than megaherz should not spread this misinformation
I’m a full 8 inches if you count the whole stroke.
I just bought 27" LG 27GR95QE and now I want this on my second stand
do cats walk over keyboards when monitors are being named?
His PC is not good enough for this monitor. My salary is never good enough for this monitor
