Would it be worth the investment to make wood pellets for heating from the sawdust ?
I was just thinking about this the other day. I'm curious if it would pay off to do that or use scraps to heat a kiln.
You have room for a compost pile. Dump everything on a compost pile. Use your tractor & bucket to mix the pile a couple times a year. Everything even Walnut can be used if composted. You could even sell compost.
Great idea put it all back into his garden.
Audio sounds good. Nice going.
Pardon my dumb question but you have a jointer and a planer and a molder.
Couldn't your moulder do the work of the planer and the jointer?
I know, I know, boy and his toys!
😉
Have you ever thought or made a chopping block from different pieces of left over wood?
Elwood Blues traded a Caddie for a microphone. Hahahaha
I'm all for making stuff myself to save money, but I don't forget the fact that I have invested thousands in tools in order to save that money. Not sure how long the payback period is, but the real reason I make stuff is because I like to do it, not to save money.
That's a really good way to put it. It's hard to buy tools with the intention of saving money and then actually save money. I suppose it really just comes down to liking to do things myself over purchasing a finished product.
I don’t think he was implying you should go out and spend thousands on a tool to save money. The title is “how I saved thousands” not “what you should do to save thousands”. I’m pretty sure common sense should explain he saved thousands because he has the tools needed to do the job himself as opposed to going out and buying it.
@@beanieweenie9543 I understand this, but our comments were merely just two people chatting about a balance of savings vs pleasure. What works for him may not necessarily apply to us and vice versa.
@@madh16 it is like making a job being fun or being work. it is a frame of mind or that grey/gray matter between our ears. it is an attitude. just like it is with looking at a glass that it half full of water. one way to look at it as half empty or half full they are the same amount of water and it is how you look at it. just like the expression six to one person is a half a dozen to another same count different measure. and if you love what you do you never work day in your life or if you work doing what you love it does not feel like a job.
if you have to justify the cost of tools you own for fun you might not be able to justify owning the tool. nathans sawmill lt70 wide cut and allied equipment is north of 75 thousand dollars.($75,000) but nathan chose to go that route. it is not the price of the tool but what you can do with it. but being able to go in your shop and do what you want when you want to i call priceless. how to afford buying the tool is a discussion with the finance officer. nathan is the boy with the toys. nathan had to get it past whoever handles the purse strings. the only difference between the.men and the boys is the price of their toys.
and the man with the most toys wins but will die someday and leaves all his toys on earth when god calls you from earth.
Ya, the shaper is $14,500 too. Take a good amount of shiplap to start saving money. I'm just jealous though :p
He replaced his blinker fluid 3:40 🤣
lol
Audio is consistent and high quality.
Congrats on the new microphone! Sounds terrific. Keep up the good work!
HI THERE lots of nice stuff in this show . john
Great sound, great boards, great shop, great video! Thank you for all your work in putting out these videos!
Hi Nathan, the cedar looks beautiful, will make some very jealous, like the new shop layout, looks more efficient and easier to work around, sound is good but we can’t really be sure until we hear you sing………..
MM77 Approved 👍🏼👍🏼……………..the new mike sounds good.
So many shots, so many angles. Another fine video Nathan! And now, I'm gonna make a suggestion that you work even harder. It would be really cool to see a wide angle time lapse of you filming a video. I think everyone would love to see a "behind the camera" scene. Maybe get Bruno to follow you with a GoPro on his head!
Id save thousands, if I spent thousands to have the equipment you have in your shop. great ideas for the most part.
Cedar through the planer....GORGEOUS!
Funny, I too am making my own ship lap. Nothing like 10k worth of red oak in my cabin that I cut on my mill, planed, jointed, and routed myself without paying a dime for the logs.
Why didnt you just let your 4 planer do all the work? Does the Woodmizer not capable? Thank you.
We still can't hear you....lol. Ok ok just kidding. The sound is great now.
Nathan don't NEED no U.S. Mint to print HIS money! 💵💵💵💵 👍
I would be interested to know how much you pay for poplar logs I cleared about an acre of it and sold it for 110. A thousand that was back in the late 80s
Now you just need to get an old tag along box trailer to blow your chips into so you don't have to handle the chips so many times. Or maybe an old dump trailer and build a box on it so you can just dump it.
I’m gonna venture a guess that perhaps you’re regretting not making the shop even bigger? I remember thinking when you poured the first slab that you weren’t visualizing the space right, and was glad when you corrected that with the second slab.
Is adding an extension in the future a possibility?
How about an exterior drone shot so we can see the actual footprint?
Great episode and learned a lot! Btw, “blinking”? Huh?
G'day Mate. Love watching your vids on milling as I am doing a similar thing on my farm in Australia. Just wanted to get your thoughts on the Woodmizer 4 sided moulder. I am planning on getting one and just wanted to know if you have any major issues with it or if it is a guaranteed purchase? Also any tips or tricks? I notice you skip plane the boards
Should put your dump trailer there for the chips and sell them for beding or landscaping
Your audio is sounding great Nathan. I think I saw you blink, lol.
Awesome video Nathan
Well if you have the kiln dried lumber and the machine to do the shaping it makes sense to make your own boards.
Why don't you set a dumpster outside the building to catch the sawdust, and put a hood on the exhaust to direct it to the dumpster. It seems that would be a lot easier to clean up...Make sure you can dump it with your lift.
Those wood chips are good for chicken coops and rabbits you can give them to A fha that is the high school some they can use with their animal for showing
I use my wood chips for chicken bedding as well as my mulch pile to make great gardening soil
What you need is a chip collection like the planer has for your wood mizer
Remember you are also exhausting conditioned air (heat/winter) along with the wood chips.
Lovely music at the end, what is it? I would love hear some more of it.
Nathan you are coming through 5 by 5. The new mic works fine.
I’ve watched every video and never noticed a mic issue…. Hmm
With all the work required to build and setup a new shop, I find that one of the most satisfying things is coming up with a simple 5 minute solution that saves time or unnecessary work. I also use a flashlight throughout the day, but since I always have my smartphone with me, I just tell Siri to turn on the flashlight.
Your tool budget is much bigger than mine..
Nathen great videos, your shop is coming together were you can start working in it. The audio was great
Keeping in feed and out feed surfaces clean and waxed is my pet peeve.
I love cedar. I bet the mill smelled fantastic
Your quality of videos keeps getting better and better. Great content.
I appreciate that!
I carry my flashlight on a belt holster.
Your audio sounds expensive today.
Your new mic sounds well worth it to my ear.👍🏻
Gorgeous color in the cedar, man!
Sound is perfect over here in Aussie, cheers,
I see an overhead dust collection system is in your future.
How have you liked the Wood-Mizer dust extractor? Does it keep up with the moulder? I’m looking at adding one.
Yes. Worth it
That is indeed some gorgeous cedar. 😮
Mucrophone sounds great!
A little help for the new microphone 🎤.
thank you sir,
@@OutoftheWoods0623 You're welcome.
Man you are good with the camera
I just purchased an MP260 and was wondering if I need a straight line rip saw prior to the moulder if I"m going to do T&G hardwood floors? Do you use one?
It would work better to pre rip your blanks yes
Sounds real good.
exploding Great!
This is just a good channel.
Cheers
👍
better title: "how I saved thousands by using 10's of thousands of dollars of tools"
the machines didn't cost as much as you think, so your attempt at being clever and witty has failed, keyboard commando
Sound is great!
Great video. I am especially entertained by the statement "How I saved thousands by making my own shiplap." Your equipment investment has to be $200K plus. Yes you too can save by making your own shiplap. I realize you didn't get there overnight and it took a lot of work to achieve what you have. Good job.
New mic sounds good 👍
Audio sounds great
I can smell that cedar
New equipment setup looks really efficient. Any benefit to individual hoses fot the chips with shut off valves run from the overhead to eliminate trip hazards?
New mic sounds great.
Too bad that Juniper, Red Cedar, Aromatic Cedar doesn’t stay red. Exposed to sunlight it turns brown. Great videos!!
sound is excellent
Audio is perfect !
Thanks for another great video
Awesome, thank you!
man you are SO right about a flashlight - i've always got one (along with a razor knife/tape measure) close .
A while back I asked if you knew anybody who had or made shiplap and you told me you wasn't sure but you said there was someone in Jonsboro that might cut shiplap and I could not remember the name. I have popular trees and would let you have half if you could maybe cut me some shiplap to put on my stick built cabin. I would like to build a 16x16cabin and I'll be sure to build it at least 2ft above the ground. If you'd like to I could really use the lumber and all the poplar is very strait and I would water proof it well and let it air dry before building. I also want to build on to it later on.............David
Nice looking boards those look mighty fine. Excellent video and the sound is perfect.
Sounds great
My EDC flashlight is a Olite mini that I can charge with my phone charger or from a usb port. It's a handy indispensable tool.
Sounds very good
So satisfying to bring forth the beauty of trees! Thank You Nathan! Many Blessings with Joy of Being! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Love that cedar!
Sounding GOOD!
sound is great
Just one thing that’s great about living in East TN- an abundance of Red cedar.
Love sawing it.
you sound golden.
Nathan, you have a dream shop to create quality finished wood products. Excellent choice of equipment.
mic works well
Audio sounds great.
Audio sound fine. The cedar you showed has some nice color bunch of knots but that's not uncommon with cedar. It's just the way it is.
Great looking workshop and beauty machinery.
Great video showing different facets of your operation and daily routine. Your microphone 🎤 sound great 👍
I bet it smells pretty nice in the sawmill right about now.
I’ve never noticed any issue with the sound before but if the new mic makes folks happy, run with it.
I could watch you all day !! Take care and God bless🙏💚👍🇬🇧....Simon
blink all you want keeps eyes moist... mic good
Thanks for watching
Glad your blinkers are working, and you are not a ROBOT, loud and clear on the MIC, well done, great purchase.
Hey Nathan, you have things really looking and working great for you. Thanks for sharing with us, stay safe and keep up the good work and videos. Fred.
Yes good idea about moving it closer to the DC system...am the only one that looks for the pick in the waste boards.....lol
Audio sounds just great...Boy that's some pretty wood!!!
You sound. Good
Sounds good!
One of your more interesting videos, imo. Fairly up-lifting to see how you've moved up in the world, as it were, from just a sawmill to a planer, edger, and all (I'm not sure what all). I did work in a small wood shop, and I feel called upon to remark that you have one heck of a clean shop!
Love the new mic. I also love your choices in music, but not talking and music at the same time.
