In the 70s my Dad, and I set a oak fence post. Dad said that the post would outlast him. He passed, the farm sold. About 20 years later the new owner got around to the post. It was still solid when he pulled it. Elm lasts a long time in the ground too.

I have a similar experience. We (I was 11 or 12 years old)up stock fences in the 70’s with local native hardwood timber mostly elm and oak, the yew straining posts. Whenever I come across those fences to replace today I salvage quite a number of them, they go on the “I’ve got a use for that stack”. Not many of our original fencing gang left working now though. Just me daft enough to be still straining wire 😉👊🍀

I live in East Texas, we get 60 inches of rain per year. Here, to only thing that last in the ground is Mulberry , cypress, and rich lighter long leaf pine ( heart wood after the sap wood is rotted away). The heart of the long leaf pine last the longest. The oaks just don't last in the continuously damp ground we have. Even the 40 cca treated post rated for ground contact will rot after about 10 years. Trust me, I have tried everything....including setting them in concrete. Some "virgin timber" long leaf pine heart wood , known as "lighter pine", rich in pine pitch, will last 40 years in sandy soil. In wet clay soils around here.....nothing last very long.

@@tomsawyer4776 what about hemlock pine which the railroads used for ties. Also Honey Locust is used in the Midwest for fences, very rot resistant. The honey locust with the long spikes, not sure about the spikeless version.

    Nathan,
Happy Birthday. I remember a video, must be three years ago now, we're you said you were 39. I have a hard believing I've been watching you for over three years. I agree with you that White Oak is far better than wolmanized lumber. Over the years I own my millwork company, I sold quite a bit of wolmanized lumber and came to learn the good grade and the very bad grades. May the LORD bless you greatly this coming year.
