@@GetJinxed-POWS Oooh my gosh a dark fantasy, that’s so awesome! I’d be happy to help as best I can, thank you for asking! 😊
For starting a book - the biggest recommendations I’ve gathered include not pressuring yourself with the first sentence, but instead focusing on the first page/s hooking readers in. And also making the readers care by showing some of your character(s) quirks, humanity/relatability, and philosophies, routines. (The funny thing is, my writing style’s changed since I wrote my first chapter, so I’ll be applying these things when I go back and edit haha!)
Also! Me being excited about writing the story is just as important to me as readers being excited about it. I try to keep in mind that I’m writing the story I want to write because I’m passionate about it! To keep looking forward to things and to keep readers engaged, one thing I tend to do is worldbuild/reveal details as my characters physically walk through their world more frequently than backstory. It’s another way I get to discover new things I hadn’t planned!
Also, along those same lines, I flesh out my characters based on their ghost, lie, want, need, and truth (I used Jessica Brody’s “Save The Cat! Writes A YA Novel” to plan this). Every so often I check that my characters are driving the plot forward and not being passive. For a story’s middle especially, I focus on showing my character making decisions based on their misbelief/lie.
These are the things that work best for me, it totally may vary from writer to writer and won’t apply to every story but! Hopefully it helps :)
Please keep up the amazing work! Wishing you well on your writing adventure 🥳
