For those who need, UA-cam did unsubscribe me. I'm not blaming anyone, make sure your subbed and keep showing the corporal he's support. Love this channel. Happy New years to everyone and thank you for what you do
I agree I back that comment 100 percent but since I 1st started watching this channel I haven't stopped.Happy new year all and thanks for all you do corporal.👍
To be honest, youtube has unsubscribed from this channel along with a few others that I recently noticed aswell.. I hate that they have been doing this..
We made and used these back in the 80’s in our Recon unit. It was taught to us from those before us for who knows how long. We’d also use these for our improvised hides by adding some hammock netting with jute twine, burlap strips and vegetation. Our ponchos were our shelter until they came out with the goretex bivy bags. We used 12” tent poles and put small drill stops on the ends for the grommet holes. I still have mine. Good video on how to make it and thanks for not claiming you invented it like some channels. Keep up the good work!
Happy Sunday, Corporal! What an awesome video! Loved the idea with the poncho! Absolutely outstanding and innovative! Thank you so much for all that you do!!! Corporal’s Corner ROCKS!!! 🏕️🪵🔥🤗👏🏼💪🏼🙌🏼
This is an excellent way to convert the poncho into a versatile tarp cover. I did exactly this with my 8 X 11 foot DCF tarp, yep, it was perfect. Plenty of room, light weight, stand up one side for access to stove, let it down to protect from wind and rain. Great demonstration, Corporal, thanks…from an old veteran, retired in the foothills of the Smokies.
Dang, my cancer is back, kidney this time. Looks like stage 1 so I'm lucky. Surgery in January some time, and good chance to beat it before it spreads. I only mention this cause I'll be laid up for a week or so, and I'll be watching your channel on my downtime like I did the last run. Keep up the good work, I really enjoy it. 😊
Great video! I've made a set of Alpha poles out of aluminum, and more recently, custom length Easton carbon fiber poles to save weight. Something to try, is a second poncho as a ground sheet snapped to the edge of the alpha tent so you can clamshell yourself in there and keep you, and your gear, off of the wet ground. Thanks for the content.
Thanks for showing the affodrable, readily available DIY version and sharing the origins story. I was curious about that. Very nice gift from Tony! I hope he is doing well and am glad to see you two working together.
Thanks a lot for this video. I have never actually seen this variant before. Here in Norway, it would be difficult to use most of the year because of ticks, but the setup is very good. I shared your video, by the way.
Corporal, (L-CPL), 2003 Iraq 🇮🇶 vet here. Bro, LOVE your channel. Respect your massive skillet and honestly, I know comments can be tough. Feel like you should just “do you” and “be at rest” not focussing so much on the comment side. It’ll drive you mad bro tryin to please everyone. Cheers !
I was posting on that website back then and made a set of poles for my poncho. I bought replacement pole sets and shortened them as needed. Still have and use them. Another great video, Shawn!
I have to say the Modern Survival class is a great class. I was there this past May. I had a blast, and was able to practically apply what I learned, and new. I’m actually going to probably try to make it to the May class in 2025 myself. I highly recommend this to anyone.
Oh man I feel old now- I remember when they first posted and described the Alpha Tent. The only thing I think our host didn't stress enough is that they really need to be staked or otherwise tied down in all but the lightest of wind. Great quick shelter, particularly as a hunting blind, and a 6x8 tarp will sleep two. Which is why I've had poles for a 6x8 tarp and said tarps in my car for... 30 years. Dangit!
Awesome AF!!! That is a slick kit for quick shelter to get out of the elements fast and foldable poles are so light! Four stakes to secure it in a storm quickly! What else could we do with the poles… Hrm… thinking! P.S. love my folding skillet, eggs and spam over the fire were delicious! I may have to get a second one because my wife likes it for the kitchen due to its size and space saving…😂!!!
Probably the best use for them ideal brand wire nuts. Nothing scares me like a jbox full of B-caps with OG cloth romex. Love your videos and here’s the comment for the algorithm.
I have always love the Alpha tent, so much so, that I made one out of an 8x8 tarp. I called it my Bravo Shelter. Lot's of coverage. I can't remember the overall length of the poles, but if one will measure the diagonal of the tarp being used, Multiply that by .06 or .07, and add that length to each pole ( ie . . 8'x8' tarp has a diagonal of 136", multiply that by .06, which gives you 8 inches, add the 8" to the original length of 136" , you now have a pole 144" long ) , With this formula, you can make these for any tarp or poncho. I use the 9mm aluminum poles, but for the larger tarps, the fiber glass poles do better ( less twist and stronger ). Enjoyed the video, Good luck in the New Year
I feel like Corporal should make a video on his citing system, he always does an excellent job of telling us who he got something from and where to find them!
Thanks for doing a video on this, I've been watching your channel for years. I've been using an Alpha Tent for over 20 years, I've always used aluminum poles, I made the poles out of fiberglass like this once and got the same "S" bending going on, which I didn't like and caused the whole thing to be much less rigid and resistant to wind. I also glued velcro in the middle of the poles, hard side on one and soft on the other, to help keep them in place, it also gives a good place for a diagonal lashing if necessary. The first set I made I used the wire nuts as Alpha Rubicon detailed, but I found that drilling through the aluminum pole and putting a 3/4" keyring in place made a much more secure footing in the grommet, lower profile for packing, and gives a good tie down point. You're right about doing this with just about anything, anything made of nylon, anyway. I made a set of Alpha poles for my USMC field tarp. I figured the formula to get the right measurement a while back, but it's been a while, I think the multiplier is 1.075. You take your corner to corner measurement and multiply it by 1.075 (if I remember right), and cut your poles to that length where the tip will stop in the grommet.
I used to be a member of this group. Remember when Trip first wrote this article, :-). Helluva walk down memory lane. Bunch of great folks used to be there. Our mantra back then was "Facta Non Verba"... deeds not words. Most of us have aged out or passed away, :-(. Literally a full DVDs worth of articles behind the pay wall.
I spent quite a few years on the street. I made the same tent idea with a 10 x 10 tarp and it served me well for three years. It had the interior size of a standard camping dome tent you might buy at Walmart. I even used it in the winter and got a fairly decent hot tent.
Mr Kelly I would love to get one of your fixed handle skillets but I can ever get on Etsy quick enough cause I'm usually at church on Sunday morning. I hope you continue to make them I might try to get one someday. God bless you for your service and your videos they are very informative.
Outstanding!!! This is a very cool, compact and versatile shelter idea. Thanks for the video and for sharing your thoughts, ideas and experience with us Shawn.
good to see some Poncho love, hehe. Ive done this before, but with a twist. Low ridgeline in the front (about 3 ft) , then wedge 1 el cheapo mylar blanket in from each end between the sticks and poncho , shiny side in, to meet in the middle , tie together , then stake off the overhanging outer flaps to close off the ends where the poncho is raised and voila, almost a hot tent with small fire , sweedish torch, or better yet a Carolina fire hole out front. 10 degrees and sleeping in a light shirt and mil wool blanket. I used saplings , but really like your shock cord idea. Now I have to order some of those! LOL Peace brother.
THANK YOU, SHAWN! Your Alpha tent video saved me a ton of money. I have a USGI poncho AND a DD Tarp 3x3. These 12" shock corded poles will work like a dream. I have an electrical supply place 3 blocks away and a Walmart (for the poles) w.et miles out. I can't wait to get to work on these. Again, thank you for test driving these ideas.
DR WHO!!! Love the reference 🙂 Super cool video, gonna have to get some poles for my poncho asap! How great is Tony's knife, dang, I am gonna need that in my life yesterday. I love Scandi so much, really glad that the grind goes all the way down!
Great little DIY I intend to execute for my kit. I normally carry a poncho anyway and adding poles adds little plus it will all fit in my USGI waistpack. Thanks for the tutorial.
A little late to today’s party, but I made it. As always, another lesson from the Master Bushcrafter! Thank you. Wishing you and yours a healthy, happy, prosperous new year, Colonel! Take care and stay safe. 😊
I combined this with a the "winterized ranger roll'. I added a cheap wool moving blanket (discontinued from HFT) added grommets with a grommet kit. then added a space blanket(could upgrade this to the arcturus or pathfinder blanket/tarp), and a woobie. This creates a sleeping bag or an emergency tent system with the blankets "built in" With the space blanket on the bottom it can work as a tent floor, wool blanket on top of that for insulation and the woobie as a blanket, in tent form. Remove the poles to be a sleep system without tent.
Corporal Kelly, You are the man! As soon as I saw you use that yellow wire nut for the ends of the poles I thought a perfect idea! Thanks again for another great project!
For anyone considering doing ng the modern survival skills class with Shawn and Jake. DO NOT hesitate. My brother and I attended the march session last year and it's everything you need it to be. Didn't know what I was getting into when I decided to chance it on a class with a dude I followed on UA-cam and a buddy of his. But it was 100 percent worth the time and money without question. Cannonballed it through the night from Buffalo (Go Bills) To get to this class and I would do it again. I cannot speak about EJ and Ken as they were not there last year. But Shawn and Jake led tier 1 instruction that focuses on getting everyone leveled up on their skills rather than beating us up for no reason, yet By no means did they hand out certificates willy nilly because they worried about your feelings. You either got it done or didn't. And if Shawn and Jake are bringing these other dudes on board no doubt in my mind they are just as legit and easy going down to earth dudes as you'd want them to be.
Hey Shawn. Another great vid. This is the stuff I've always hung around for. Can't wait to see what the future travels bring. As always... Keep makin em n we'll keep watchin!
Awesome video... I was making these after I got out of the military in the 1990's.. I drilled through the ends of the electrical wire caps and pulled the shock cord through them, then tied the overhand knot. That way they were permanently attached.
If your one of the ultralite crew, that shelter would be very difficult to beat for a good deal of the year. The poles might even fit into belt kit pockets, then you would not need a backpack at all. The mat and sleeping bag fit easily above the rear pockets, and you could still carry two quarts of water plus food. That is definitely giving me ideas.
Outstanding idea on the survival / alpha tent. Will add the poles as soon as I can find a few dollars. Great video as always. Don’t worry about the haters and their problem. Those that follow and want your video info will keep on watching. Loved your truck updates. Happy new year

Amazing vid as always perfect emergency shelter . How would u insulate the bottom for canada winters
Kick azz video, loved it.🙏🤘🇺🇸
This is the best idea since the tarp ridge-line . I like it for quick deploy. Im ordering poles today.
Those numbers do kind of help, the (2) 18 GA. Wires or (3) 12 GA. Wires is what that means. That will help with sizing the pole
Real people stay with you. idiots dont

been doing overnighters
Neat idea with the wire nuts. That's something one keeps in the back of your mind. Thanks for the content.

Outstanding video on a DIY shelter!! Simple and to the point. Common-man and common-sense AF

I watch your videos but hardly ever comment, that was a worthwhile tip!

The Military poncho, one of the best inventions ever.👍
I agree-ish.. I'm really loving my new-to-me usmc tarp. I still carry my poncho, but the tarp is just that much bigger and better.
Awesome AF!!! That is a slick kit for quick shelter to get out of the elements fast and foldable poles are so light! Four stakes to secure it in a storm quickly! That moment you realize you should have kept your poles on the tent you trashed. This is what causes hoarding. 😂
Great tip Shawn! As a desert dweller having a 'stand alone' poncho/tarp is mandatory!
This is the REASON I have watched you for 6 years .... RELIGIOUSLY !!!!
Amen, Shannon!
I really enjoyed this one, the ugly tent. I will make one with my grandson. 😊
Thanks for doing a video on this, I've been watching your channel for years.

Good to see fellow Rubis still getting at it out there!
Thanks Corporal you saved me $33 and just in time too! Also found a use for the wire nuts I no longer use since I started using Wago wire connectors.
Definately going to try this with my poncho. Thanks Corporal and take care!!
I spent quite a few years on the street. I made the same tent idea with a 10 x 10 tarp and it served me well for three years. It had the interior size of a standard camping dome tent you might buy at Walmart. I even used it in the winter and got a fairly decent hot tent.
Ordered 2 skillets. 1 for myself. 1 for a lucky friend someday.
Can we be friends! 😊

I'm in the same boat. I am heading to church at 10am Sundays. Can you do a mid-week drop?
no i cant
Tony does great work on his knives, I own several!
I was a member of Alpha Rubicon back in the day. Glad to see content from the group showing up. Great video man. 🤙
Thanks for showing the link :) how you "Seen the Alpha tent" most just say look what I did :) . keep up the good videos
Have to admit, pretty damn cool shelter. Who would've thought using electrical connectors to raise a poncho shelter.
Man, I haven't thought about Alpha forever. They had a lot of great articles.
Love the poncho hack.
I thought you did one of these already like 8 to 10 years ago. I could be wrong but I thought that was one of the first videos I seen of yours.
Outstanding!!! This is a very cool, compact and versatile shelter idea. Thanks for the video and for sharing your thoughts, ideas and experience with us Shawn.
LOVE THIS EPISODE!
Hope you can do some Southern California/ Desert videos one day. Thanks, Larry from LA
What a brilliant idea.
yeah buddy. Another video to enjoy. Thanks alot Corporal!

What a great idea! Best thing I see on yt in this entire year. A section of bug net would be awesome with this setup.
Was thinking a moskito headset placed over the hood and the hood opened up so you get airflow without skeeters would be cool.
Thanks!
This is a brilliant idea from the perspective of a newbie.
Been waiting for this one! I have been wanting your take on the Alpha tent!
DR WHO!!! Love the reference 🙂 Super cool video, gonna have to get some poles for my poncho asap! How great is Tony's knife, dang, I am gonna need that in my life yesterday. I love Scandi so much, really glad that the grind goes all the way down!
It’s time to rock.
Tony did nice job on the knive
does a nice job on all the knives
@recall5811 didn t know he made them
I'll always drop love and watch full vids. Plus tony powers make some beautiful blades
I have tried to watch this video 3 times do to working overtime, great video and great concept
Got my pan today. Thank you !
We appreciate simple, low cost ideas that WORK!
Another good one. I love how you say one thing and people hear something totally different.
I love this style of content; back to the basics, repurposing wire nuts. Outstanding!!
This is brilliant. I've been dinking around with this idea for a while. Thanks for getting this great idea to a larger audience!
Use what is useful and dispose of the trash. You always have useful information and have continued forward.
Always great videos! Thanks. Happy New Year Corporal and everyone.
I appreciate the great ideas I love the channel
This a really interesting episode. Gives me plenty to think about.
I combined this with a the "winterized ranger roll'.
I added a cheap wool moving blanket (discontinued from HFT) added grommets with a grommet kit.
then added a space blanket(could upgrade this to the arcturus or pathfinder blanket/tarp), and a woobie.
This creates a sleeping bag or an emergency tent system with the blankets "built in"
With the space blanket on the bottom it can work as a tent floor, wool blanket on top of that for insulation and the woobie as a blanket, in tent form.
Remove the poles to be a sleep system without tent.
Impressive, indeed! I like this a lot. Bravo Zulu!
Yep, going to have to add this to my emergency pack. Thanks for this!
Cheers cpl I mostly use a British army bivy sack in the summer months.
Finally got a notification
Same. Was kinda confused when I saw it.
I love that knife. Tony is awesome. Thanks for an awesome video.
Brother I seen a lot of shelters done. This is slick ! Especially for the Bivy sack setup ! Outstanding!!
Smart size knife
Nice one Shawn, great idea.
I have a Dirtbound knife from Tony Powers too, they're the real deal, folks!
Excellent, lightweight space saving and good to go,cheers corp.
Corporal Kelly, You are the man! As soon as I saw you use that yellow wire nut for the ends of the poles I thought a perfect idea! Thanks again for another great project!
Another great video, thanks!
Great video as always! I bet that you could even add an Arcturus or Pathfinder Survival blanket reflective side down for added warmth in cold weather.
I would love to go to the classes, if only they were in Florida
DIY gear is a solid add on to the channel. Rather this than buying to… Love this concept and going to do it next weekend.
8 seconds in....ya got all my attention!!
Another interesting survival and camping lesson! I love the hatchet it’s the best one I’ve owned.
Great video and thanks for the reminder of tent poles. God bless you and your family.
Thanks Corporal. Happy New Year, and hope you had a Merry Christmas
The mob is fickle, brother.
Keep doing what you're doing. This was a great video.
Thank you.
That was a great help! Good stuff.

Canada here we come.
Another killer video as always and the class sounds awesome
Great poncho setup. Looks like a good setup. Gotta try it. Thanks for being out there. Loving Survival Mastery.

Outstanding idea on the survival / alpha tent. Will add the poles as soon as I can find a few dollars. Great video as always. Don’t worry about the haters and their problem. Those that follow and want your video info will keep on watching. Loved your truck updates. Happy new year
Thank you for a great video. The Alpha Tent is ingenious.
