The thing just is that in Finnish language there is the written finnish and spoken finnish... And sometimes they can be quite different. Songs often have slang terms that you probably wont learn from duolingo. But duolingo will give you a foundation to the language, to see if you like it 😊

He's not singing about "fucking" and there is not a single curse words in this song. "Hiton kiree" does not translates "fucking tense", it translates "damn tense". He has manners

​@@silmamunakas You're right, he's not dropping f-bombs all over the place, but there's a lot of nuance when it comes to translating curse words, and sometimes you you have to choose the closest equivalent. Finns have A LOT of curse words, and we use them quite liberally when compared to English.
Yes, "fuck" is too strong when compared to "hiton" (or "hitto"), but translating "hitto" as "damn" here (as per the dictionary definition) is way too mild, especially when compared to the way he says it in the context of the song.
"Hiton kiree" is DEFINITELY stronger than "damn tense", so that's why I used "fuckin' tense" to dilute it a bit. AFAIK English doesn't have any curses that are stronger than "damn" but milder than "fuck", so I was out of options.
And because I am aware of the discrepancy between "hitto" and "fuck", I translated "hiton epävirees" into "way out of tune", leaving out the cussing altogether, to not make him sound like sb who drops f-bombs constantly.

"Hitto" is something I could now say in front of a child to bear him from hearing worse 🤷🏼‍♀️ but it is not compatible with "fuck", which is a vulgar word, while "hitto" is a strong word...

@@silmamunakas Yes, I did know that. However, Gone with the Wind was shot in 1939. I dare say the world has changed since. Our society and our norms change, and so does the use of language.
BTW, I AM a trained translator with a university degree. While this was just a quick and dirty job for the foreign fans and by no means captures neither the creative use of language nor the extensive vocabulary Käärijä possesses (you'd need a poet for that, which I am not), I dare say my version is still better than raw google translate output, and I DID put thought into the choices I made.
While I am open to feedback, in this instance I stand by my initial assessment.
Using "fuckin'" sparingly adds extra punch to the song, whereas using "damn" would not have the same effect.
