These matches were something normal when Nadal was playing and he was only 18 years old here, it shows how strong he was mentally and people forget how Nadal was booed in his career against Federer. Supporting Federer in Wimbledon like Djokovic had to deal with is very different from getting booed by everyone. Nadal will always be the greatest legend.

In terms of players I am neutral with both Nadal and Djokovic but as a person Nadal is far better for sure. Never saw him yelling at crowd to shut up even though he experienced similar things to an extent like Djokovic or giving smirks like Djokovic does to crowd after winning against both Nadal and Federer. I see fans of Djokovic complaining about crowd everywhere but not seeing the difference in behaviour during hard times between these 2. For Nadal he earned it from a good behaviour while Djokovic just became too desperate for it with that cringe worthy celebration which looked fake.

Extremely different personalities. Nadal is an icon of respect whereas Medvedev is quite the opposite hence crowds usually dislike him. I was only 17 and I am still a Rafa fan to this day, probably because he is usually so composed, he doesn't like arguing and whenever he does it, he is right all along. I don't think there's any other player like him and Roger out there, and there will be a long time until someone like them will come into this sport. I am so happy I got to witness Rafa's greatness and the Fedal rivalry :D. I only regret not ever seeing him play a match live, but maybe it's for the best, probably I would have fainted from the tension lol.

No Sirve His play style back then rubbed people the wrong way for a number of reasons. He didn’t play like he does today, he used to be a lot more defensive (like a LOT more defensive) & hit a lot more moon balls, which was pretty brand new at the time. Tennis in the 80s & 90s was very fast, usually involving serve & volley if it wasn’t a slow surface, & in the 00s was a lot of attacking baseline tennis going for winners off approach shots & such. So his play style was seen as “not the ‘right’ way” to play tennis, & the moon balls were seen as pushing the ball. Plus, he was a grunter, & grunting is annoying. Lastly, he’s not graceful, & the French love the players with flair. The reason players like Kuerten & Federer are loved by the French is because of their style, not their results. This is also why French players are typically more flashy & showy with their shots (Tsonga, Gasquet, Monfils, Paire).
All of that led to a rough relationship for Rafa for the first 5 years or so. It was around 2011 that they finally started to warm up to him. If I remember correctly, he even said in an interview that year something along the lines of how that tournament is the most important tournament to him, & he doesn’t understand why he gets booed, because all he wants to do is play for them. Either way, around 2011 or 2012 is when it started to change & the French really started to appreciate they were witnessing a legendary dominance never before seen & probably will never be seen again.
His play style in the last decade has become less defensive & more all-around too, which is more palatable for the average fan to watch. His English (& French) has improved tremendously. The way he conducts himself off the court has gotten more coverage as he got older, people began to see what a genuine guy he is.
So basically slowly but steadily his image improved. Which is why in 2015 when he lost, it was deadening silence (unlike 2009, when everyone wanted the upset to happen). It felt like the crowd had lost a family member or something that day. Today he is loved by the French, but he certainly had to earn that love.
      Hope this answers your question.

I get that being young is tough in certain situations, but please, even at 18, Rafa had tremendous mental strength. I think the only player on clay that could hang with Rafa, in the early 2000's was Coria. There weren't a lot of great clay court players when Rafa came in, and that has allowed him to take advantage of the situation.

Seing Nadal playing at RG is a dream for a lot of tennis fan in France. That's a bit sad to see people in the comments saying things like "Karma, he won 13 times". He is loved and respected in France. I remember 1 time being at RG seing a game of Novak (i wanted to see Nadal but impossible to had a ticket for his match...). Rafa was playing in an other tennis court at the same time. We could hear the announcer saying the names of the players while entering the other court.
When "Rafael Nadal" was heard to enter the court next to us, the court i was shouted Nadal's name and gave a great standing ovation. A girl next to me was crying because she couldn't get a place to see Nadal playing. I think a lot of people know that they are lucky to see him playing and winning right know. Sure the french crowd was obviously direspectful to Nadal this year 2005. Yes, french crowd can be rude and have innapropriate attitude and it happens more than it should. But they can also sharing love during this competition (for example, Guga). Not everyone in France love him. But everyone respect him (and a lot love him). @@fullenergika I don't get your point. Your sentences are clearly not appropriate and show a strange anger from you.
The title of the video clearly directs the point of view by indicating that Nadal was hated. That's wrong. It's just that his opposite was a French player. So it's logical that the public gives more support to the French player (and let's not lie, it happens everywhere in all countries and its logical).
It is also logical and normal that the public takes more and more interest in a player who marks his sport. It happens everywhere, in all sports and for all countries.
Every tennis player has been booed in his tennis player career. Nadal is not a special case.

The thing is french players try to take every advantage from the situation that the crowd is behind them and will do whatever for them to win. So many times the players do simply whatever to get this pathetic crowd boo the umpire or the opponent. Bravo Rafa for handling this.

Nadal was 18 years old here, it shows how great he was under pression, also he was against the crowd in every of his meetings against prime Federer. Djokovic is a grown men now he is much more older and experienced than Nadal was.

@@stuewz Yes i agree, Nadal matured early and that is admirable. But Djokovic faced dislike from crowds all over the world from the very beginning of his career, and until this day that didn't stop, it only intensified. And when you consider who did he have to beat and on what occasions he did it, it kind of dwarfs anything that Nadal had to face throughout his career. No disrespect to Nadal and other players, but if there is a world champion of clutchness Djokovic tops that category by a wide margin.

Pistol Shrimp Studio I respect your opinion, but I don’t agree at all. The one who stopped Federer and all this huge Federer hype back then is Nadal. He had the crowd and the medias against him everywhere as soon as he had to face Federer. You probably don’t remember all the hate Nadal had in that period, he was the most hated tennis player because he was the one who dethroned the people’s champ and it’s very recent that he gained respect because I remember that even in 2013 the crowd was against him everywhere against Federer. People is talking about the biased crowd at Wimbledon 2019, but that’s what Nadal had to deal with throughout his career against prime Federer. I agree that Djokovic is more clutch in the toughest situations, but under pression Nadal is on top.
