I worked with Terry back in the 70's pulling dump trailers......what a crazy sob. He had a trailer he called old flip because he had tipped it over so many times. His engine of choice back then was cat 1693 and he could sure make them run. He was a mechanical genius and a fun guy to work with. May he rest in peace
I would have loved to meet him
what a wild guy, could only imagine what he was like as a person
Very cool...
One of My Favorite Cat Motors, damn tough, very heavy iron too...but big power..= to the Cummins Big Power 400's...!!
What happened to him? Looks like a young guy.
I met Terry in the early to mid 1980’s he was a good friend of my father.
I love the fact that grandpa took the effort to come up with a genious solution so he could stand up in the back of the cab, RESPECT! Nice Machine brother.
Air start sounds so cool. I get to start locomotives every day.
I was parked next to an air start "Corn Flake" cabover Freightliner back in the early 1990s. When it started it sounded like Godzilla ripping a Cadillac in half.
I remember CF used to deliver to our local business park, threw me for a loop the first time I heard one fire up!
40 yrs ago every haul truck at the mine I drove with Detroit's had air starters. Lot's of plane engines do the same. It's actually pretty old tech and nothing special.
My brother drove for CF, and I remember when they started using air starters. Loud!
@@turningpoint6643 doesn’t need to be special, just practical!
@@muttleymatthews5200 True, while those air starters work just as well as any electrical starter. The downside is under hard starting conditions like real cold weather or poorly maintained air systems that leak, you run into having enough air supply issues. They sound cool as hell, but the more usual starting motors are the more practical. For extremely large ships engines with secondary diesel generators and compressor systems I seem to recall air starting is still in use today simply because it's cheaper and easier to do it that way.
There is a dude up in Ontario, Canada who built himself an oversized pickup with a 70’s international medium duty body on it. It has a four cylinder Detroit diesel two stroke out of a 1960’s dump truck, and it has an air starter on it. Since he only needs air for the horns, starter and seats, it’s pretty simple, and not prone to leaks so far. People love how it sounds both starting and running.
I bend in the dust in admiration of the special tractor, built by a driver with a big heart for his work.
Tanker drivers for Exxon in Houston had air starters on their whole fleet of 2000s era KWs. It was a safety feature to avoid ignition sparks when cranking up after loading fuel.
I hauled gas for over 30 years and not once have I ever heard of an explosion being caused by the trucks starter. It's probably closer to the truth that they had air starters because they were cheaper and cost less to maintain. I call bullshit on the sparking deal.
@@herbhungwell8134
_"It's probably closer to the truth that they had air starters because they were cheaper and cost less to maintain."_
Maybe, maybe not. Given that this was a company that made their drivers wear a hardhat while *_unloading_*, and that also made them get out and place cones along the entire path everytime they backed their truck up anywhere, I'm going with "safetety concern" regardless of how improbable or unnecessary it may sound.
For what it's worth, I also never heard of a spark from a starter causing an explosion at a loading rack, but that doesn't mean it's never happened.
Ignition sparks on a diesel? Uh, sure dude.... You don't have a fucking clue in the world what you're talking about....
@@sjfk1306 Who said anything about "ignition" sparks? I specifically said sparks from a starter. Plus, I agreed that even sparks from a starter was unlikely, just not impossible. Read more carefully before saying something "dude."
@@_PL_ no, you didn’t, “avoid IGNITION sparks when cranking”…. That’s exactly what you said…. And, if a engine uses spark and a ignition system, they spark all the time…. SMH
As someone who literally grew up listening to diesel engines i just love the sound of them revving and idling.
Nice truck! I'm grateful to hear about windshields pushing in. I've had my 79 Pete 352 to 103, and never thought about that.
What a coincidence, just saw this truck passing by on the road last week and now this pops up in my suggestions. They are in my head
Man i love your channel. I'm not a trucker but i love what you are doing for the community. Follow your passion and you can't go wrong!!!!
Had a air starter on a R model Mack when I was in the service. Loved it
Best trucking channel on UA-cam
The story behind this truck is amazing….I love sitting with the old school guys….these fellas are becoming fewer and fewer every day.
Guy with the black truck is an ass. He knew you were making a video and decided to make a shit load of noise on purpose. Don't get me wrong he has a cool truck but should save it for HIS video.
100% agreed
Not everyone is mature enough to deal with themselves into being considerate of others
Co-sign he is a jackass
Yeah not sure why hes being an ass, the video camera guy went over there and literally was like "You're a great human being for doing this". Some people cant take complements and dont know how to deal with them because they've been shitty for so long.
@@Clapxiomatic especially truckers. Their isolated for so many hours/ days that when they are finally given the attention they don’t know how to act (I work with truckers, they are some of the biggest assholes I’ve ever met.)
Love watching trucks!! I never realised until I came across this channel ! Thanks Mai!
I met the guy that built that truck back in about 1988. Very cool older gentleman, came in my shop, needed filters or something. He was pulling a reefer. I remember that nose, the KY, and that side door. Awesome to see it again.
When your rig needs a lot lizard to start the day..
Had a day cab IH cabinet with Detroit 6V with air start when I worked for a harvest crew in 94 thru 98. What made that truck even more unique was it had wedge brakes. Had 20 ft. box with 40 ton hoist.
My first experience with an air start was at 5yo with my grandfather. I ran for my life! :)
Now, that is a sound I have not heard in a long time.⛟🚛
Very nice build.
Our farming neighbors had an old Mack with an air starter. Really interesting.
Greetings from the Ohio Porters. Mercy me…I heard air starters when I was a kid and fell in love with them. Quite unique and powerful! I have a buddy that has a Freightliner that has an air starter and a Cat engine! He thought he would pull one over on me one day and told me to stand beside the door when he started it up. I got all EXCITED when he started cranking it! 🥰 Thanks for the history of this rig, too. The only thing I didn’t like was the bad language, but still quite enjoyable. Cabovers Rule!!!! 🥰🤩😎🇺🇸
wounderful people fine trucks , its a great pastime and such a healthy intrest its great to hear the man talk so proud of his wounderful people before him, especially his grandfather , good video thank you very much ,, greetings from ireland
Remember seeing this old girl rollin down the road back in the day.
He could actually charge his air tank back up with the air in his tires to start the truck and then pump his tires back up with his own truck. That's last resort if no one ous is around.
Yes you just hook an air hose to a tyre (ok, tire). Two tyres generally do it. You should be able to start the truck on 80 psi though 120 is better. If you keep the system properly serviced you shouldn’t have to run out of air. I haven’t run out on mine for years. The air starter tank is isolated from the main system.
I pulled up on an old trucker who batteries and starter went loss air pressure he MacGyverd a hose to his trailer tires to give enough air pressure to roll and pop the clutch mind blown!!! I had No idea
Good idea
@@O1dmanwalker one of the best parts of having a stick shift vehicle
He could have a backup air tank with a valve that closes on shutdown.
I had an air start truck. The air start will work very well if you dump about 1/2 cup of diesel into the starter hose about every 6 months, then start it. Never had a problem after I learned that. The tank would hold air for a few weeks.
Kool af! 114 mph is a good cruising speed for that casual stroll!
And there was plenty left after 114. I know the truck and builders. VERY interesting family...
Now i know what the sound was on the tow truck in maximum overdrive
You’re Exactly Right!
And mad max
That is one sweet truck!! Air starters are so dope. Reminds me of the cars in mad max
that is crazy awesome mate, really cool to see a motor started by air
Awesome video thanks for your time and consideration that's one nice truck 🤑 stay safe out there boys 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸😎🤠
My grandfather and dad ran triple digit trucks love hearing those stories
The genius of some ppl never ceases to amaze
Hermoso trailer, me encantaría conducir uno de esos, son verdaderos monstruos del asfalto, Saludos
That was an awesome idea for the sleeper, I drove a cabover for a few years in the early 2000’s, I used to love them till I drove one and had to change my clothes laying down, I still like them now for the rarity
This dude reminds me of the old days of trucking I only hear about.
One of the coolest Kenny’s I’ve ever seen
Had an air starter on a Freightliner when I hauled gas for Amoco. I bet all those people sleeping loved it when I started it in the middle of the night!! Cool old truck!
Our fleet in 1987 had air starters, we even had jumper glad hands for air starting another truck that might have been out of air. sounds cool when they start up
cool info just didn't need to see it 2x in a row
Thanks for the vid! :)
So awesome Randy!!!
I live next to Woodstock IL. Home of the movie Groundhogs day.
Met Terry about 1990. He had a mannequin in the radiator area.
A real Johnny Cash truck!
The paint looked very worn, had the Studebaker writing on the side.
Didn't have the exhaust stack on the back, the exhaust pipe came out the side.
Had stainless steel cab extender panels from reefer trailer side.
Terry seemed like a good guy!
Wow i saw that that Terry built Kw in victor ville ca like 15 year ago glad that truck still rooling
That sound of the starter reminds me a great movie 🎥Mad Max and the action when he bring the track back to oil facility ...
I have 24.5s on my Blue Bird wanderlodge RV... I love em..
Now this is COOL
wow real special type truck put together
thank you for share video
I had one in the tire shop I worked in years ago. It was loud for sure.
Just AWESOME
Stunning
What a great idea! To put the front end of a rifer in front of a cab over wow
Love the old school that's my truck
Seeing a truck look this badass & original makes me wish like hell I had got my CDL 💯✌️
That's cool, we had diesel scoops underground that had air starters on them. I've never seen any piece of equipment above ground that uses one though. They're quite nice unless of course you run out of air pressure lol.
We Know Mr Thompson ....We know that truck ....Wow....It's On UA-cam...Way to Cool The Asian Mai Show
Your deja vu opening was weird.
This truck has an air starter…
This truck has an air starter…
There’s a glitch in the matrix…
Amazing truck !
That drivetrain...oh my....done, winner!
this guy should have been at the TopGun LargeCar Shootout 2021!!! maybe 2022...will look for u next year!
Akers Motor Lines (a fallen flag among many in the South) used air starters in the late 1950's- on a cold still night - the terminal was blocks from our house- you could still hear them clearly. WHOOWOOOP !!
So awesome
As can assure all you younger drivers that you've NEVER been blown out of bed by the truck next to you starting up if you've never been by one of these things. 🤯
Yea many times back when I was driving asleep an you hear the rig next to you start up your definitely awake then
First time I heard one was. In the 80’s I damn near torn my sleeper off. Trying to get the hell outa it. 😂😂😂
That's awesome dude!!!
I'm impressed
Such a great story and great truck
So cool man both trucks wow
The rarest beauty iv ever seen ♡
What a cool truck
You can tell he is a real trucker when he talked about the windshield, lol
He lied like all of them do. 🤣
That is so crazy. That's dope though. Respect to the old school
That is one cool truck.
Still needs batteries,Radio, lites Etc won’t run on air.It is nice in the cold, cold winters.Next best thing to a pull start.I was paroled out of cabovers sentence in 1984 and never looked back. This one is beautiful and unique. My dad drove those short Cabover day cabs for GM in the 60,70,80’s. A couple were really unique. They had turbines in them. That whine just made them sound great.
Pneumatic starters are common on marine applications. navy frigates had 16v149's with pneumatic starters as prime movers for generators.
Also on LCM 6's they had 6-71's with hydraulic start motors. No batteries for starting the engines.
My grandfather owned a feed lot, he owned 2 but we are in Cali, one standard k 100 and a peterbuilt cab on a k100 chassis
beautiful
Badass looking truck there.
Looks like something the futurist artists back in the 30s or 40s would have illustrated how they thought trucks in the year 2000 would look.
I'm not sure what I'm watching here, but that truck is awesome
I worked for Freightliner of Utah (before they moved to their current location) in the 90's fresh out of college with my A.A.S degree in diesel tech. Had a Conway tractor come in with a air starter issue. I was put to work on it since I must have been the cheapest guy in the shop to work on it hourly. I had never even heard of such a thing as an air stater before that day. I was told they had ten of them in their yard with the same issue. Their mechanic thought it was the air starter leaking air and ordered up 10 new IR starters for each truck at 2k a piece. I spent two days with no manual, instructions and pre-internet working out the issue. I finally narrowed it down to a slave valve that had a slipped o-ring inside of it. It rolled out of its groove and jammed the valve open. This leaked all of the air out of the stater air tank through the air starter. I was thrilled I had found the problem and was eager to go to work on the other nine trucks I never saw. I guess they had their parts changer fix the other nine tractors.
Belleza de truck felicitaciones
Ahhh the sweet sound of a air starter
I'm surprised he also didn't switch to air powered wipers.
The age of that truck air wipers were the only thing available
My 52 ford pu has vacum wipers. Couple drops of ATF and the diaphragm is good to go...
And windows
I drove a couple trucks that had air starters on them and it was hilarious at the fuel pumps at truck stops because every time you hit that starter somebody walking by would dam near jump out of there skin!!!! They are loud and nobody expects a noise like that nowadays!!!! Sometimes you would feel bad but most of the time it was hilarious!!!LOL!!!!
Funny when this truck shows up on fb and people claim it’s a photoshop.
Nice truck Randy
What a cool rig
very cool!
Very cool
Very cool👍
Kenworth Ohio pride ❤️. I never knew about the Terry Bilt models, very cool 😎
Cool truck👍
The dude next them them is a freaking jacka##. Oh you have a Jake and big pipes.
They made a lot of those trucks like that back in the '70s 60s batteries used to suck in cold weather that's one of the reasons for the air starter.
Consolidated Freightways was big on air starters
Back in the 70s, the Exxon tankers that deliver gas and Diesel to our shop all had air starters
OMG, she’s so beautiful, you don’t see these anymore. Everybody’s got a curb sniffer
I work for CVR Industries we paint semis that semi is badass !!!! Are starters old school like me and you !
The old Consolidated freight lines Freightliner cabovers had air starters they had a big tank behind the cab that held air for the starter
drove for ccx in early 90s. their fords had air starters
Thats bad ass !!!!!
Our old city busses used air starters, loved them. 1980's GM fish bowls.🤣
