@@Persun_McPersonson yeah, but if you're a hurdy gurdy enthusiast buying from a one-off luthier it seems like they could be even more innovative. I wouldn't consider spring-action on the keys enough of a change to have to call it a different instrument even, just a better hurdy gurdy.
@@rm9308 It doesn't seem to be something considered enough of an issue by those who become fanatics of it. If it was more popular, this change would definitely happen due to more people with varying wants/needs playing it, and the demand for such a feature would go up as a result.
True. I'm guessing this guy and most enthusiasts play folk music all day, every day. But here's a modern player who could use more speed and less clackety action on the keys: ua-cam.com/video/Ec729nmajwc/v-deo.html
Reminds me of my uncle Jim. That old guy can play any song he's heard just once from memory, any show theme song, any commercial jingle. He's made of music, it's part of who he is. Rob Scallon is like him.
okay, think of holding a cello like a guitar. it would be roughly like that but get rid of the neck and put a bigger melody box on the top and put in some bigger strings. and then you have a Bass Hurdy Gurdy.
Ugh, when he talks about not touching the wheel, it brings me back to an orchestra concert in highschool. I played the upright bass and this concert included a piece with a bass solo, which is pretty damn rare in orchestra and I was pretty hyped up. One of my friends who was also in orchestra rubbed a wax candle on my bow. I rosined the crap out of it, but I could tell my tone wasn't quite 100%
I saw a short UA-cam Ad that had like an old colonial band in it and one of the guys had a Hurdy Gurdy like the one shaped like the Lute one this guy is using and the actor in the commercial was fake strumming it like a guitar lol I could see the wheel handle on the end.
One thing I noticed you do is that your right hand isn't steady because you involuntarily emphasize the notes with the tempo such as guitarists normally do. It's more obvious at 3:20 as you move your leg. It sounds like a low rate tremolo pedal.
Hey, violinist here. I have always loved the sound of the Hurdy Gurdy. It is definitely God's instrument and in the hands your new friend, it's the voice of the angels! Moreover, I have never seen a Hurdy Gurdy that is so gorgeous and with such attention to detail! ~ Questions: How often do you have to replace the strings? And the cost of each? What type of strings do you use? I heard what your friend (Jim Kendros. I Googled his name and there are lots of videos with him in them to watch!) said about them in your other video, but I'm wondering what you would ask for if you walked into a music store. My dad owned a music store for 35 years, and I never heard of him selling "Hurdy Gurdy strings." He would have mentioned that, and even shown me some(!) ~ I just found your channel and am enjoying your videos. Yes, I've SUBSCRIBED to both of your channels! I've been out of the behind-the-scenes music world for some time now, and I miss jamming with my friends. Watching your videos takes me back and has lifted my spirits in abundance. Thank you for that! ~ And thanks for mentioning Altar Music.com. I'm sure they'll have strings(?!) and I can't wait to see George Levert's unique Hurdy Gurdys! ~
These videos are nice. You should listen to the french band Artùs and the artists of the french label La Novia, they're doing awesome stuff with the hurdy gurdy! Keep up the great work and instruments exploration!
Hurdy gurdy Spock is great. Jim (perfect name for irony) is an amazing player and well I'm just amazed with both the instrument and his playing and knowledge
You should invite more intersting muscians. This one is so cool
Yeah that would be awesome if you could find musicians that play unique instruments and have a similar session with each.
He just had one of the best theremin players in the world on just the same kinda format!

Hurdy Gurdy Metal
Hurdy Gurdy Jam
Rain (On Hurdy Gurdy!)
Silvano Schwetscher agreed
Extra challenge, three hurdy gurdys playing rain just like in "his rain without effects" video.
Ever heard of Patty gurdy? Look her up
hurdy gurdy is used by quite a few metal bands so for me that would be just normal.
there are many folk metal bands that use hurdy gurdys like Eluveitie, or apocalypse orchestra
"Mother nature is doing it"
Majestic quote.
Not sure why they never just added springs though? Lag means only slow music.

The instument's peak of popularity has long passed, so newer innovations to its design haven't had much incentive to foster, unfortunately.

It's really cool when the expert gets just as much fun out of it as you do.

what if there was a "Bass-Hurdy Gurdy"?
Oliver .S. Richards Woah.
I guess it would be about the size of a cello, hell this thing might be massive! but somehow awesome.
Whoah. Okay, now I really wanna see that.

That dab at 4:20.

I find old stuff interesting especially from medieval or renaissance peridots because it shows how supply and demand shaped the products back then😂

This guy is so knowledgeable, I'm loving these vids
Cover the Jurassic Park theme with this.
I want the Sause to buy a proper renaissance gurty
I think a hurdy gurdy could be a great addition to any metal band.
Yo look up Guilhem Desq. He plays electric Hurdy-gurdy and it is fire.
They really sound like string bagpipes. I've always loved these.
I love the jam so much. So amazing.
I love the hurdy-gurdy but if I bought one it would exceed my wife's tolerance for squeaky scratchy sounds!
*Sea of Thieves intensifies*
Hark! Can thine music machine do thee Djent?
Good sir, thou'd better believe it bloody well can.
It's kinda like bag pipes and a violin and a piano and a guitar so cool
Subway to sally, saltatio mortis, Cellar darling, in extremo, eluveitie, etc have so many nice ways to combine hurdy-gurdy and heavy guitars.
Now just stick in some pick ups, slap on some distortion and make some Hurdy Gurdjent.
In Poland there's a metal band that lead instrument is hurdy gurdy. Check out Żywiołak - Dybuk
Must have been invented by an ancestor of Jörg Sprave.
Would love it if he had a UA-cam channel!
4:00 ...good stuff right there.🤘
i cant wait to see what mmusic you make with it
i loved this instrument so much i decided to make my own
Would love it if you tried out Nyckelharpa as well!
Also known in English as key harp or key fiddle. It's a very beautiful sounding instrument!! Would love to see that aswell!!

I think that was intentional
He isn’t a skilled hurdy gurdy player though.
Who's to say it's involuntary
Just a guess because I don't think it sounds right.
I actually prefer it, it gives me a solid sense of the beat and I would say that's what he was going for
The manly musician handshake
Low man’s lyric
Just two guys cranking their hurdy gurdies together
amazing vibe !

Why cut this out? Oh well Im glad you added this.
What a beautiful instrument
jontron's dad teaches rob how to play the hurdy gurdy

I think part of the charm is that their accuracy of note is only modest.
