When I take my in ears out it's because I feel I can hear myself better without it.

the ear pieces are "monitors" : one side has the vocal while the other has the background music. The reason being that it) helps the singer hear his/her own voice to better to hit the right notes. The purpose of the background music is that the speakers at the concert venue are usually away from the main stage (where the performers stand), so there's a delay in hearing the music (performer vs. audience). Without monitoring the music, the vocal and the background music might be out of sync with each other because of the delay. For Taeyeon, she's said that she hits the high notes better when she doesn't rely on the earpiece; it can also be distracting to the singer. Also, she takes it off because the sound might not be transmitting correctly (too loud or too quiet).

They use special mixers there where one can mix every voice, parts of or the whole background sound and other sources like the voice of the director for every single earpiece so every member can have his own special monitor mix. With a big group like GG this is a very complicate and therefore error prone task....

taeyeon is a singer that always want a perfect performance, she always have a problem with her ear piece because the sound control is not good and annoyed her ears.

I believe there was a stage where she wasn't able to reach a high note (because she was sick and her throat wasn't cooperating) during I era and I heard that she cried at the end of the performance... I might be wrong but my point is Taeyeon seems to be the type of person that wants to give her best in all performances

I may be a little biased but I swear, I cannot imagine any other SNSD member or another idol pulling it off very well as much as she does. She just seems to do it naturally which is why it makes her look 10x more attractive in my opinion. With that being said, I can completely say she has mastered handling ear pieces and technical problems perfectly.
From what I see she takes it out for themes reasons
1. Before a high note
2. Sound is bad, you can hear it too sometimes
3. When Fany sings, since she sings loud

even taeyeon and her earpiece can be made into a complilation... and we love it..
so I have been a sound engineer for 40 years now and I mix in ear systems......for a performer to pull one ear piece out is not a unusual thing some say they can perform better cause they hear the room and feel it.....and I notice she does pull her right one out a lot.......but to pull both out and reading the look on her face there is a problem....would love to talk with her and see what these problems are from her point of view..........but just to show how awesome a singer she is when she pulls them out her pitch and singing are totally amazing.........bye the way I've been a k-pop fan for a long time so it's not just something I have picked up.........I see a lot of this going on with groups live but it can all be prevented with a good monitor engineer...............Peace @ Love

Taeyeon´s solo performances show very often that she es unhappy with her earpiece - that speaks volumes about the quality of the monitoring in general, being it the hardware or the people who are responsible at the controls.....

I guess she just catches onto the pitch and then get rid of it cuz some members can go off bit and its really magnified in their ears. and if she catches onto the pitch and tempo she doesnt need it anyways. Plus for high notes and adlibs, when you have to sing a note high or low than the other members, its really confusing to hear them sing. So she just gets her pitch and note right and does her parts. And most importantly, if you cannot hear yourself sing, its really hard to maintain pitch.

This vid only proves that she sings live on every performances. But honestly tho, she seems to have a lot of malfunctioned ear piece since their younger years until now and it's bothersome. SM and all the music show productions should fix this.
Its not malfunction , the ear piece is for her to hear background music and her own/other voice . She just cant handle her own highnote and loud voice from background music or other member singing especially when tiffany sing coz her voice is loud (sorry for bad english)
