  • Yes Chris UK or as we all affectionately know him as, "The Gate Guy" has started a new channel called Kryptonite Physics. He thinks that physics is bad for the globe. Has he got this one right or are physics kryptonite for him?

    • @GeneralNickles

      Not to mention that the "flying" that planes do isn't even flying to begin with.
      It's falling. Very well controlled falling.

    When you explained the "still going east" bit, I just before hand had wondered if trying to walk against the rotation is like walking the wrong way on an escalator that's moving slightly faster than me, and thought I was being silly. And then you explained it basically with the same principle and that made me feel smart.
    I'm not a dumb person, but having ADHD makes it hard to grasp concepts sometimes. If I can do it, then Mr. Gate Swinger has no excuse.

    • @protoborg
      @protoborg Рік тому +5

      Except it is NOTHING like walking the wrong way on an escalator. Walking "against the rotation" has no effect on your direction of travel as direction of travel is relative to the surface of the Earth, not the universe. If you are walking west, you are moving west. If you are walking north, you are moving north. If you are walking south, you are moving south. If you are walking east, you are moving east. Dan is just wrong on this point. The Earth's rotation is relative to the solar system. There is no east or west, north or south in space. Those directions are only relevant to the Earth's surface. Thus, the movement of the Earth in space has no bearing on your direction of travel.

You said objects weigh less on westbound flights. I believe you intended to say they weigh less traveling East, as the centrifugal force would be greater going _with_ the rotation of Earth (which would have a greater mitigation on gravity, thus decreasing weight).

No scientist uses the term the way it has come to be used colloquially. What most people mean by "theory" is hypothesis, which is also something that is very scientific if you test it. My point is that "known physics" and "physics theories" mean the same thing.

    Here's a simple physics experiment at a Flat Earth level of understanding for them. Go on something like a train, so something that has a large open space travelling at a decent speed that you are free to move about on. Let's say the train is moving at 60km/h, and you are standing in the middle of a carriage with plenty of space around you. While the train is travelling at a constant speed, you jump up in the air, not touching anything else, and then land again. You should find you are pretty much in the same spot, give or take minor tweaks to accelerate, break or turn. According to Flat Earth logic, you should be flung to the back of the carriage, as you are at a speed of 0km/h, just moving up and down, and the train is still going at 60km/h. But the reality is... that you are not. Why oh why is that the case? What could it possibly be? 🤔

    • @vandalhooch9773
      @vandalhooch9773 Рік тому +7

      Yep. Nearly every Flat Earther argument I’ve come across can essentially be reduced down to their inability to comprehend basic Galilean relativity. It’s at the core of their obsession with the rotational speed of Earth. They always express it in terms of 700-1000 miles per hour. Of course they leave out the part about that being tangential speed on a path with a massively large radius. Never let them get away with that dishonesty. Make them express the rotational speed of earth in the correct “units” of radians/sec. Have them hold up a basketball and spin it at the same angular speed (not tangential) as Earth and then ask them why they think anything should ever be ‘flung off’ something that takes 24 hours to complete a single spin.

A person's weight can fluctuate almost as much the difference he attributes to flying East vs. West over the course of a day, and we don't notice it. And he also shows the force acting at an angle to the plane. The plane's orientation would always be such that the resultant forces act towards the floor of the craft.

    Here is practical exercise to help people understand the size of the earth and it's curvature.
    (this is metric because I'm an Aussie, mm = millimetre, km = kilometre)
    1. Find a large open space, eg. a school yard
    2. Mark out a 12.742 metre diameter circle (41.8 feet for the US peeps)
    (maybe use a string 6.371 metres long and a peg in the middle to draw the circle line)
    This circle is the earth at 1 mm = 1 km scale, 1:1,000,000 (1 to a million)
    3. Now draw a 10mm (slightly less than 1/2 an inch) curve above the edge of that circle
    This is how high passenger aircraft cruise (10,000 metres)
    A 100mm (~4 inch) curve above the base circle is the edge of space, i.e. the practical end of the atmosphere.
    The ISS orbits at 408mm (~16 inches).
    4. Lie down and sight along the edge of the circle, and see how slight the curve is in practice.
    5. Inside of the edge of the large circle, draw a smaller curve 30mm (a bit more than an inch) smaller than the large circle.
    You now have an idea of how thick the earth's crust is relative to the globe.
    6. At this scale the sun is 150km away (93.2 miles)
    7. The sun is about 1.4 km diameter at this scale
    8. The moon is (on average) 382.0 metres away and is about 3.474 metres in diameter (at this scale)

      Of course, but the Coanda effect and others keep the atmosphere rotating with the earth (though with variations, due to its fluid nature and the other forces in play) so the motion is still typically analyzed relative to the ground. Except for actual aerodynamics, which is almost always relative to the airmass.
      This is true for navigation as well, since very few destinations are in the air (except for in-air refueling stops, which are a tiny fraction of all air traffic). So we normally calculate airplane motions relative to the ground, and treat the airmass as a generalized force vector to compensate for it's relative motion to the ground.

      It wasn't "word salad". Anyone with a background in basic Aeronautical Engineering (which I have) knows what every bit of it means. Arguments from Authority fallacies have no business here.
