    When towing, cross the safety chains under the hitch. Left chain hook to right safety hook on vehicle and right chain hook to left safety hook on vehicle.
    If the trailer breaks loose, the crossed chains prevent the trailer hitch from digging into the ground.

    • @jakeeasterwood9317
      @jakeeasterwood9317 3 місяці тому +2

      Bingo. Noticed that too. Many people do not understand that if the trailer becomes detached that the coupler will dig into the pavement or ground if the chains aren’t crossed. The “X” acts as a cradle of that occurs.
      Thanks for pointing that out.

      Along these lines to help in case the chains need to catch the trailer, we put 2 quick links connecting the untwisted chains to form a basket to catch a falling trailer. U can also shorten your chains with the quick links to prevent dragging n decrease amount of drop for a trailer.

    Tip for running wires, buy the plastic wire loom sheath, it'll stop wires from chaffing or getting cut from pinch points and tight areas from ripping the wires. It's super cheap and goes a long way to protect the wire.

    Excellent job. One of my first trailers (for a small Whaler) had those center rollers with the axle caps. I replaced those with stainless washers and cotter pins because I wasn't confident they would stay on after repeated dunking in the brine😏. Clearly the original owner didn't wash his trailer off after salt water use. That's one solid small trailer. Subscribed!

    Should have painted the u bolts as well, to protect the galv longer. Coupling bolts not only are too short but should have been galv too, and the little dog chains are way too light to use as safety chains on a boat trailer- especially carrying a fibreglass boat. Even if those staples were marine stainless, they wont hold long in that wood - use galv tek screws. If you screw an earth to the trailer, or even the light housing, slather the drilled hole with mastic or silicone to stop the bare metal rusting- most important for earth connections because they'll be the first to go bad. Best to not earth the trailer at all but run an earth wire straight to the plug. Here in Australia we use 7 pin trailer plugs with earth going to it directly.

    You’re kidding yourself if you think that’s going to last. Get a torch, cut off ALL the old crap and replace with new. Use stainless hardware, and get a single leaf spring. You can’t wash out the salt and crap that gets in between those leaf springs, which leads to premature failure. Buy some sealed LED lights and wire those up all brand new. Unless of course you plan on selling it right away to make some money. Otherwise, do it right, or do it twice!

But this guy preps amazingly compared to them so would be fine. All the same I'd rather use either 2 pack for toughness or hammer finish because with the silicon content, its slicker and will wash off easier.( I've restored, rebuilt, and built new boat trailers when they had good fittings but the frame was rusted out.
