If Jesus is called Lord, does that make him God?

  • In the New Testament, both God and Jesus are called “Lord.” This causes confusion about whether or not that makes Jesus God. Understanding the meaning of the Greek word translated “Lord“ and how people in the first century used it in language resolves the confusion.

Thank you for this insight. I will tell you what really got me sparked to look into this topic is 1 Corinthians 15:22-26. You know, I have grown up in church my whole life but only started studying the Bible about 7 years ago and then even more deeply in the last 2 years, and I have always believed in the Trinity the way it is taught. So I have read 1 Corinthians 15 many times and only this last time did it pop out to me that everything must be subject to Jesus but after death is subject to him, then he will turn over the kingdom to God and even he will be subject to God so that God may be ALL IN ALL.
I sat on that for a while because it didn't sit right with me and what I have always believed. Then it's like God just started opening my eyes as I was reading the Bible and all these other things started showing me the relationship between God and Jesus and us and Jesus. I have been reading the Torah this summer again and all of the sudden the story of Joseph in Pharaoh's house just clicked-Pharaoh gave Joseph his signet ring, which basically gave Joseph full authority to write laws, make decrees, and pass judgement and Pharaoh said to Joseph "Moreover, Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Though I am Pharaoh, yet without your permission no one shall raise his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt." (Gen 41:44) and then he took Joseph all through Egypt and told everyone to bow a knee to Joseph. Even when the people came to Pharaoh, he told them to go to Joseph and do what he says. Joseph even told his brothers that God made him Lord of all of Egypt. This was a foreshadow of the relationship of God and Jesus. (Pharaoh and Joseph) and the relationship of us and Jesus (Joseph Lording over the entire Kingdom).
Then I noticed that God tells Moses he will be as God to Aaron and in a separate account that he will be God to Pharaoh. When God puts his work and will and words into someone to do his work for Him, that person is acting as God. This is also a foreshadow of Jesus. Jesus tells us many times in the New testament that he does the will of the father, he follows the father's commandments, he speaks for the father. When he says that he and the father are one, he means that they work together as one unit, but that does not make him equal to God. He is God to US, but even he has a God.
    Revelation 3:12
He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will not go out from it anymore; and I will write on him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God, and My new name.
Jesus calls Yahweh "MY GOD" 4 different times. Then Revelation 1:6:
"and He (Jesus) has made us to be a kingdom, priests to HIS GOD and father..."
    So many other instances too....
Paul says there is ONE GOD and ONE Mediator between God and men, that man Jesus Christ. (1 Timothy 2:5)

This is so enlightening!! Wow I never knew the word "Kurios' which means Lord occurred so many times in the NT but is not translated Lord!! Instead it is translated sir, master or owner! Wow, now I see so clearly the BIAS of the translators in trying to reinforce the doctrine of the TRINITY!! Thankyou for this very clear teaching! God bless!!

I grew up in Mexico and many prayers to God use "Señor" for example: "Señor, pongo mi dia en sus manos, que se haga su voluntad" meaning "Lord, I put my day in your hands, let it be according to your will". You can also greet any men in a respectful manner by calling them "Señor", for example, "Buenas tardes Señor" when you greet the bus driver or store clerk. When people were looking for the man of the house, "Se encuentra el señor de la casa?" I am sure we don't mean that the store clerk or the dad is God but we do mean that we respect that person.
This explanation makes a lot of sense and I need to learn more about biblical unitarians.

What do we do with these verses that Say Jesus is the Only Lord.
Jud 1:4 For certain intruders have stolen in among you, people who long ago were designated for this condemnation as ungodly, who pervert the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
1Co 8:6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.
    Please help me

You should read the word, Lord, as a first century Greek man would read it.
It doesn't mean "God", it is a term expressing respect to another person.
Try taking off your Trinitarian glasses when you read the bible.
Try looking at Strong's Greek Concordence for the word kyrios/ and see all the different ways the word "Lord" is translated besides "God"

I’m confused? So didn’t Jesus claim to be God? Didn’t he say he was when he said you’ve seen the father. Do Unitarian’s all deny Jesus divinity? Just curious

The disciples of rabbis at time of Jesus used the same terminology for their relationship with their rabbis as slaves used for their relationship their masters. Jesus's disciples were indeed calling him Master (supreme ruler over them) when they called him kurios. The title THE Son of God was a Hebraism for The Messiah.

1st Timothy 6:15 Who in his times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; -- is this translation accurate? Just a question. I understand is as he is the Lord if lords, not just a lord. I have an uncle named Jesus (its pronounced hey-zeus) so cuz I call him Jesus, dies that make him Jesus? Ur pretty much sayin that if we call him lord, it means the same thing. I believe its the faith in his name, not just sayin it, its believing it.

Lord in the first century CE was always religious. Referring to God and not man never man.
Kurios can mean Lord or it can mean master or sir or king. The latter three are favored. Context confirms jesus was the following three.

By you question you imply that the Father is excluded right? Or are you saying Yeshua IS the Father? If you say that, the trinity is still proven false.

Understanding the Bible as a whole clearly declares him as the son of God, The Messiah and not God. I was raised in the institution that invented the trinity. There is tremendous deliverance in a Christians life when you understand Jesus is THE Son of God and not God.

    Jesus
Jesus is the word of GOD not GOD .
A son of GOD not GOD the FATHER.
He shows us that when he shows us how to pray .
Matthew 6:9 (KJV) After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
He did not say pray to him , but to the FATHER.
    Matthew 12:50 (KJV)
For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
He will be all things to you but not your GOD .
    1 Timothy 2:5 (KJV) For [there is] one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
How more clear must it be ?
These tell us about Jesus . That he is a messenger only and not GOD .
    John 3:14 (KJV)
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
Look what happened with the serpent.
    Numbers 21:8-9 (KJV)
8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.
    2 Kings 18:4 (KJV)
He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.
See how Jesus compares himself to the serpent , so we don’t make the same error as those people did with worshipping the serpent.
He is a faithful servant of the FATHER.
Same as we must be .
If he was GOD the FATHER why would he deliver the kingdom
    to the FATHER ?
1 Corinthians 15:24 (KJV) Then [cometh] the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

MOSES IS JUST THE OVERSEER OF THE HSE OF ESRAEL WHILE JESUS CHRIST IS CALLED AS LORD BY THE MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST. BY ACKNOWLEDGING HIM.LORD THEY ARE GIVING GLORY TO GOD THE FATHER. HE IS IN FULL.CONTROL OF THE BODY OF THE CHRIST OR THE ANNOINTED ONES WHICH IS THE CHURCH.

"If Jesus is called lord, does that make him God?" Well if Jesus is called LORD GOD, then yes he is God. That is exactly what he is called by the Prophet he sent from heaven to the Prophet John in the Revelation.....
The author of this video, basically is giving his interpretation of scripture, as proof that Jesus is not God.
Now, we all do that, but we should all be aware that you, me, everyone this side of heaven DO NOT SEE CLEARLY, according to the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 13:12, who JESUS CHOSE TO PREACH TO THE GENTILES.
Is there any human in the Bible that sees clearly? Yes there is. I'll show that to you, later.
Also, every One and only God believer saying Jesus is not God, uses scripture that shows WHO GOD IS, A MYSTERY scriptures, according to the Apostle Paul, 1 Timothy 3:16, to define plain WHO IS GOD (Jesus is God) scriptures.
The One and only God crowd, seem incapable of understanding the difference between Who God is, a mystery, and Who is God, not a mystery!

However, there is 'Who is God' scripture in the Revelation, plainly telling us , JESUS IS GOD, NOT A MYSTERY.
All Christians who believe Jesus is not God, and Islam, will claim there is nowhere in the Bible where there is a plain statement that Jesus is God.
    Oh, but there is.......
In 1990, I had a 24 hour vision, in answer to my prayer request to understand the Revelation of the Bible. After 30+ years of study there, I assure you, that yes there is plain scripture that SAYS Jesus is God, and from a very reliable source, THE ONLY HUMAN IN THE BIBLE, according to the Apostle Paul, that SEES CLEARLY!!!! 1 CORINTHIANS 13:12.
What I present to you, NO ONE HAS SEEN, because if someone had seen this now or in history, it surely would have been presented. I've never seen anyone, scholar or not, present the following.
So, let's get on with it....
If you look at Revelation 22:16, you see Jesus sent HIS ANGEL, from heaven, seeing clearly, 1 Corinthians 13:12.
This 'angel' tells God's Holy Prophet John, that he is also one of God's Holy Prophets in Rev. 22:9.
The Koine Greek word 'aggelos' translated 'angel' in English here, can also be translated messenger.
Again, that happens to be the ONLY HUMAN SOURCE IN THE BIBLE THAT SEES CLEARLY, according to the Apostle Paul. Again, 1 Corinthians 13:12.
This human was sent from heaven, BY JESUS, seeing clearly, not a human on Earth that does not see clearly.
That 'angel' Jesus sent, calls Jesus LORD GOD of the HOLY PROPHETS in Rev. 22:6, and also tells the Prophet John, who recorded this vision, that he, 'the angel', is ONE OF GOD'S HOLY PROPHETS, in Revelation 22:9.
Only ONE ANGEL WAS SENT in the Revelation, according to God's Holy Prophet John, who wrote that in Revelation 1:1, after seeing the vision.
To sum up, JESUS IS NOT GOING TO SEND US HIS PROPHET, from heaven seeing clearly, REV. 22:16, Rev. 22:9, to tell us Jesus is LORD GOD of the Holy Prophets, Rev. 22:6, IF THAT IS NOT TRUE!!!!
This vision, known as 'the unveiling' in the original Koine Greek, pulling aside the veil to see clearly, was given to reveal Truth.
    It's the REVELATION OF JESUS CHRIST.....Rev. 1:1.
There is a warning in Revelation 22:19, telling you, that if you subtract from the Revelation, 'the unveiling', YOUR NAME WILL BE REMOVED FROM GOD'S BOOK OF LIFE.....BY GOD....NO ETERNAL LIFE FOR YOU.
GOD WHO DOES THAT IS JESUS, Rev. 3:5.
" He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I WILL NOT BLOT OUT HIS NAME OUT OF TH BOOK OF LIFE, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels".
I don't believe there is a Christian anywhere in the World, that doesn't understand that it is Jesus speaking in Rev. 3:5!
So, this is serious business, here.
I suggest you give what I have shown you, what was shown to me, apparently something no one has seen, some serious consideration.
God help you, God bless you.

Jesus is not called "lord" he is called master or teacher or messiah or leader. In Truth he is never called lord once ever.
