I was into single board emulation but I finally bit the bullet and bought Launchbox on my rather weak laptop... it's still significantly better than any of the common SBCs. I guess I got sick of trying to squeeze blood out of a stone and Launchbox is better of the other frontends (It sure as hell better be: I paid for it).
its because emulating most old systems is very single threaded, SBCs typically are aimed at modern software that utilizes all cores, the way games and software was written back then is drastically different from how it is now.
because that port of quake 3 is multithreaded, meaning it utilizes all cores to pretty much their full potential, emulating older systems is very single threaded and it uses ~25-30% of the CPU basically these low cost low power SOC's are meant for multi threaded performance as it requires much less power and produces less heat.
Retropie is based on Raspbian IIRC, which uses X11 as the display server, so you're not avoiding X11 if you use retropie. But you also mentioned desktop, so maybe you're talking about XFCE in Twister OS? If that's the case, yeah XFCE will use some resources while in-game, but if the emulator needs the memory the XFCE will be paged out. It was designed to be lightweight, it should be pretty quiet & lightweight while playing.
@@ChristopherGray00 well, versus gbm I mean. You’re don’t need all of the window management and network transparency etc that are obviously additional overhead
It's a shame Goldeneye 007 can't even run on a Raspberry pi 3. Even F-Zero X can run smoothly. Ultra HLE at it's time could run N64 games with a 100Mhz processor...
@@resfan000 I dont Think its possible only mupen64plus or lr-mupen64plus are available though the nvidia shield TV is good for n64 emulation so i would go for that or use project 64 on ur pc
It's weird, this is such a problematic game, but users here: ua-cam.com/video/AM064SIC2xc/v-deo.html Have seem to got it working flawlessly in Raspbian Buster for a while now. Seems even better then with your full overclock. It seems Retropie may not be the best way to get top performance in emulators.

Love your videos
Great stuff I like it
Nice!!! Thanks a ton for making this I have been wondering how to get this to run.
Quake 3 runs fine on a 800Mhz and 64Mb GPU. How the heck doesn't it work on Raspberry ?

In TwisterOS i found running Retropie from the Desktop is slower than running EmulationStation from Terminal, go figure ?
really? Interesting makes sense though
@@drewtalks Give it a try, see if you notice any diff
Do you have a video that shows how to overclock Drew
Doesn’t x11 desktop slow things down a bit versus running inside retropie?

retropie is a linux distro.. lol
the compositor is disabled during gameplay, so to answer your question, no.

@@cbrunhaver A window manager is separate from a display server, you need the display server for any type of video output.
Unplayable on Mupen and very laggy on Parallel, I stick with project 64
Fine on redream as long as you put it on 640x480 or lower
Update for pi 5?
What's the best image for MSDos games?
how do i overclock gpu on batocera
Please try minecraft 1.14.4 pls on its smoothest

It can run on the parrells core on low res okay now
@@drewtalks whats parrells core ?
gameplay seems worse than my pi3b+ which i run mupen64plus-gliden64-high res 16:9 for 007, mario 64, and mario kart 64
Timestamps pls
I think we can all sit down for 9 minutes without timestamps lol please

Project 64 will always be the best n64 emulator imo

Yeah it's in windowed mode not fullscreen
@@drewtalks I see that, but it shouldn't make a difference for performance. I'm sure he could of fullscreened it...
