What's your favorite mic to use on acoustic? Top 3?
Andrew Masters sm7b, rode NT2 (older version) and honestly an akg 214, it’s brighter, but also balanced!
I just put my AKG 220 somewhere near my guitar and mess with some EQ
I once borrowed two Neumann KM184's from my brother. Top notch, but yes, rather expensive. I myself have two Sennheiser e614's (I also use them for drum overheads) and put one on the bottom end (below soundhole) and one pointed at the 12th fret. Bit of eq'ing on both tracks and they form a nice strumming sound. For more detailed mid high (picking), I mostly use a Rode NT1-A pointed at 12th fret. To give it more warmth, I always add the line out track but lower that volume about 10db underneath the mic tracks.
Right now I'm doing some tracking with a couple of verge mics from antelope audio, they are small diaphragm emulation condensers, I use them in xy. Have to say that I'm pretty impressed, they are sonically very versatile, they don't handle high SPL too well though. On acoustics they do a really nice work!
MD421
Small diaphragm condenser aimed at the wood below the soundhole. Nice warm sound, and still has some clarity.
Totally!
I would add that for fingerpicking a small diafragm condencer/"pencil" microphone pointed towards the bridge about 10-20 cm away can be very nice for the right track.
Adjust angle towards the resonance hole for more/less lows.
It tends to result in a more defined attack and "shimmer" in the upper registers.
Can ofc be combined with other techniques.
Another nice one is similar to example #3, but using a M/S setup instead which gives options of a really huge yet natural sound.
I use a cardioid condenser at the 12th fret with a figure 8 directly on top, picking up the body of the guitar and the neck. I then take the figure 8 track, duplicate it and pan one to the left and one to the right. This technique is best for when the acoustic is the main instrument of the song or part of the song. It's the most full sounding technique I know of
This video is just great, definitely gonna try these out and combine them
Thanks you!
I use all three of these quite frequently. I do love the over the shoulder technique! I use this all the freaking time! All time favorite mic setup in that method that I've used at a lot at a particular studio is an SE Voodoo over the shoulder with a Neumann 184 at the 12th. Sounds sooo good! Wish I owned both haha! Someday! I honestly prob use method 3 prob the most though, especially in videos as it sounds freaking awesome and big and energetic, and there is also room for the camera to still see the fretboard! Also the end literally cracked me up sooo hard!
Haha awesome
Over the shoulder! Nice! Thats new to me... I'm doing it. Believe it or not, I'm using my Sure Beta 87A large stage Vocal Mic for your 1st tech, (only 2 more inches away) being that it's a condenser... while using a Rode NT1-A for your 2nd. I appreciate you, Andrew.✌🏼From Miami
I aim Shure SM57 at 12th fret (like you did) and Audio Technica AT-2035 condenser mic aimed in front but away from sound hole, near the saddle. But I'm gonna try your technique 2, with condenser mic over shoulder. You are fun to watch because of your engaging personality. Stay Safe.
Enjoying the vids man ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍
I liked the first example with the 2 inches off the 12th fret. Thanks!
I've never seen that over the shoulder method before, thanks for sharing!
Another technique for the arsenal
One of my favs
My first time on the over the shoulder method , interesting!
This is gonna be very helpful with my ep thx for the tips
Thanks! Cheers
Bruuughh you have no idea I needed this video great stuff
Thanks man! I’m glad and surprised anyone else cares haha
The UA-cam algorithm is awesome since it helped me to find your channel :)
Fantastic content, you will make it :)
All praise the algorithm!
Andrew Masters haha, yes 👍 😄
Love the 3rd technique, it reminds me of the tone on Angie by the Stones, maybe it's just me
Totally, it’s definitely great for classic rock.
very nice info...love to see your opion on nylon guitars..There are various tecniques that are used here in Spain with flamenco guitars, all three that you explained and mencion are used when recording here, (r they doing it right with compression ect ect and eq ??jejej) my personal opion. But if you watch paco de lucia you can see he uses the 3rd tecnique, because of his strenghth in his right hand. Buenisimo videos mi cafe y session de ensayo va bien viendo tus vidoes ..ejeje enga Masters gracias
The way I record is such an ad hoc way! It's just a bunch of stuff tossed together to get my thought out. Most of it doesn't see the light of day!
It’s the inner slacker! JK. Hopefully if you ever want to try something new one of these techniques can be of help.
@@AndrewMasters Word man I'll let ya know. Most of what I do is pretty casual. I just like doin it for funzies.
i put a Aston spirit around the 12 fret, audix i5 at 2ft from the body, and bluebird mic 2ft from the neck and Aston room mic and then blend them to my liking and last but not least zoom in pro pro tools waveform and check for phase issues. i know it is overkill but mics are not cheap might as well use them.
Nice!
I liked # 2 - and with the 2nd technique - are you setting the pan of both mics straight up center, or are they offset at all?.. I use an SM7B as well... and will play with the SM 81 behind the ear as the 2nd I think... Thanks!
I say plug directly in and let the pickup do all the work!
Kidding aside. There's another video out there that says the second mic should be 3x the distance from the first mic in perspective to the 12th fret.
I like the blend I get putting the second mic below the bridge, but will definitely give the shoulder method a try!
The rule is, do what sounds best! Maybe slap your headphones on the body of the acoustic plug that in and crank the pre! Whatever sounds best wins.. Am I right??
would you record all three and use all three in the track?
I got a question regarding the sm7 and the Apollo interface, does it really make a difference getting a cloudlifter? Was it used in this video? I actually ordered a sm7 recently and currently waiting for it to arrive, but skipped on the cloudlifter to see how it turns put for me without first. Share your thoughts and knowledge with me please.! Thanks in advance.!
Hello... what s are yours acoustic guitars?
My acoustic sounds bad, but as far as making it sound as good as possible I either use a large diaphragm condenser on the 12th fret or if the acoustic is the dominant instrument and I want it stereo I run pencils in xy on the 12th
Occasionally I'll use the R88 a few feet back from the acoustic in the room. That puppy adds such a beautiful depth. My R88 arrives this weekend (many vids featuring it coming soon)
Hello whitch technique works with live Vocals?.
9:45 lol
Feed it!
Ive been using mid side for the last 3 years ever since i found it... nothing like good stereo width thats still mono compatible
Good video 👍
Thanks 👍
I liked the 3rd technique better. It sounded warmer, natural and not as bright. I am not recording much yet. Just toontrack drums and my guitar with eleven rack. haha
What about phase problems that come with using two mics on the same source?
Adjust the mics or flip the polarity.
Bro.. don’t hate on my acoustics bro!!
Bro. I love you.
3
psst....your allways muting the light e string when in g position ;)
Your guitar sounds dead AF. Are those old strings?
Oh yeah. For sure. I’m definitely not a guitar guy.
