This video has been demonetized by youtube. The reason they gave me was I was promoting the sale of firearms. The M2 50 cal isn't really even available for civilians and this video is about the military use but OKAY? Please like and share because when a video gets demonetized it ALSO gets views suppressed by youtube. This obviously is frustrating because of all the hard work I put into the video but I appreciate everyones support and kind comments

Fun fact. After the invasion, the area that Sgt. Smith's unit was fighting over was later turned into Victory Base Complex (VBC). In 2010, I was a contractor at VBC (running the security and operations at an Entrance Control Point, ECP 14) and that ECP just happened to be were that battle with Smith occurred. At that time, the tower was still there and it was insane how many .50 cal bullet holes were in that thing. I heard that the Army actually dismantled that tower and shipped it to a base in Georgia and rebuild it there brick by brick as a memorial.

My Dad was a platoon Tank Commander in the 50's stationed in Germany and his eyes used to get all misty when he'd talk about shooting the 50 cal on to of his tank or when all 4-5 tanks fired it at once at the range. They'd put old refrigerators out at 500 - 1000 yards in Germany in the snow and they'd, "Walk their .50 cal rounds out" to the target until they started hitting the refrigerators and they would just do incredible instant damage. He said in the snow the impacts would throw snow guiser's up easily 6 feet high, it was actually beautiful. His tank unit had the best gunnery ranking in the entire Army. Not sure if I'm stating this correctly but he was in the 826th / 3rd Division Armor. (I have his shadow box right next to me.) What a wonderful weapons platform, will eventually buy a .50 cal rifle for myself. :) Thank you to all of you that have served and continue to do so. I did not (missed my window a bit) and it's my only regret in life so far.

The convoy crews started to arm the convoys by themselves for protection and they scavenged everything they could lay their hands on, armor plates, weaponry etc. In the end some of those trucks got a legendary status, but a lot of convoys sustained a lot of losses and lessons for good support were learned.

Another tried & true Browning design still in use, although, I cannot imagine a suppressor not overheating I remember pulling an M548 up to the firing line with a mounted MA Duce on it and it would actually start to inch the track back, if it was on level ground. The 548 was very light without a load of 8” ammo. I know some of the younger guys are scratching their heads over what an M548 (tracked ammo carrier for artillery rounds) is, but we are going back to the days of Gamma-Goats and M110s (Self propelled 8” artillery guns). The suppressor is for stealth missions. For instance you go to the enemy HQ at night and sneak to the commanders bedroom. One operator silently opens the door while another moves with the suppressed M2, puts it very quietly on the tripod and shoots the sleeping commander one time very quietly. Because of the high caliber you probably need only one shot, which increases its value as a stealth weapon.

I was a Mustang line officer in the US Navy, assigned to USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC-19) . Part of our defensive capability against enemy small craft was the ability to mount 4 x .50 caliber machine guns per side. During the Desert Shield phase of Operation Desert Storm we spent a lot of time inport Manama, Bhrain. While we were the we set up an exchange program with the British 7th Armored Regiment. Some of their people got to come on board the ship and see how we did things, and some of us got to spend a few days in the desert with the Brits. I was one of the people who got to go to the desert.
While there I had the chance to talk to the Regiment's Artificer, their senior warrant officer in charge of maintenance. He spent a good half hour or more extolling the virtues of the M2 .50 caliber machine gun and how nothing else could match it for being an excellent all around general purpose weapon.

We had 3 on each PBR. As the GMG they kept me busy. Everyone was cross-grained but I felt responsible to make sure all the weapons were in top shape. 5 boats, 15 50's. I spent every night sitting between two int the bow cupola. Very few nights we came back without needed ingredients change out barrels. Old man memories.

Being from across the pond I hadn't heard about Sgt. Smith's story. Sounds like her earned that MoH and then some. We don't use the 50 as much as you guys, but it is one of those weapons that is unmistakable and makes you smile if it's your side firing it.

Many years ago I was taught to set the head space & timing on a barrel and then screw it all the way in counting the number of clicks, screw it back out the same number of clicks, check it with the gauge if it was right we marked the barrel with that number. Made for a quick change.

We used to do barrel head spacing by ear. When properly set the action would ring when you let the bolt forward, if there was a dull thunk the spacing was wrong. Faster than using the go no go gauges.

Former 0331 Marines here, we definitely humped the M2. Of course you would split up the barrel and receiver but we humped it. That being said, that was a weapons company which at the time (1998-2002) was HUMVEE based, but they made sure if our vehicles broke down we could still ingress or egress on foot with heavy weapons, MK19 included.

What I always found ironic about the upgrade, was they kept finding older and older guns still in service. The oldest turns 100 in 2023, but it was in such good shape the Army decided to keep using it. The reason for this, was no one has been able to make a modern replacement that is significantly better. Which the arm's industry has been try to do for 50+ years. So if the guns still run and nothing is better, why change? The other thing to remember is that the 50. Cal is essentially a light cannon and so no one really uses cannons anymore the effect is unique.

The only bad thing about the M2 is that it fires from the closed bolt. When the gun gets hot, rounds will cook off if left in the chamber. When moving vehicles from a herringbone or line formation back to a column after a fight it is absolutely important to clear all weapons. Had one on the track behind me cook off and missed my head by a couple of inches. Relieved the track commander, a staff Sargent on the spot.
