Why not just spend $2 and get rubber grips/pads that slip on top of the stock sticks?

+Kris Reynolds Same. I have a whole stock of grips and silicone partial covers for the DS4 as well. 2yrs in, still brand new :). Battery playtime isn't that much of an issue either because I just plug in my portable battery.
Not sure what the selection is like where you live but there seem to be very few options for grips from Amazon UK as the vast majority of the ones that come up are the same thing, just re-branded.
I've tried the ones that come with one set of knobbled convex grips and a set of concave grips (available under various different brand names) and they feel like crap. The knobbles reduce the contact area on the surface of your thumb and actually reduces grip because of this and the fact that they are made of a hardish rubber. The concave sticks just feel clumsy.
I've also tried the concace ones with a ring of raised dots that come in packs with 100s of different colours available and they feel clumsy and ill fitting.
I've tried a set of replacement concave sticks from Zedlabz that aren't too bad, but the concave portion isn't quite as large as I'd like. I'd like it if they did a convex version so I could try it and see how I like them.
As I've been using different grips etc, my problem with the stock sticks hasn't been them wearing out, it's that they are ill conceived. If going for a hybrid design, the convex portion needs to raise above the lip so you can roll your thumb on it and have the lip there to prevent your thumb slipping off the edge of the stick. Sony instead decided to make the lip as tall as the convex portion so you can't roll your thumb on the convex portion but it is also not deep enough to act like a concave stick where your thumb sits inside. It's the worst of both worlds.
The Kontrol Freek Signature is how a hybrid design should be done, but I don't like the avalable colour/style combinations and don't particularly want the added height. Also, they were already very expensive and I'm pretty sure they've jacked up their prices recently. I tried their Alphas as well, but it is just too wide and looks fugly. I tried the CQC X too, but they aren't as grippy as I'd like. The Signature is my favourite so far. Just which they came in different colours/designs
My favourite analogue stick so far is the PS1/2/3 with Grip-Its as they're a bit tacky and grip better than the naked stick.

adolf joseph trump I disagree. The DS4 sticks are alright, but of terrible quality. The tear really quite quickly. And personally, I feel more precise with the X1 controller. But I guess it just comes down to personal preference.
They made this video since you can find a lot of people on different forums/sites complaining about the rubber on the sticks tearing off, I can't confirm this myself since I have only used a DS4 once, but I can tell you that my Xbox One controller still have the sticks in a pretty good quality, neither of them has tear off.
+MikoloPulo I confirm that. My DS4 sticks got worn out disappointingly fast. I replaced them and while i still had it splitt i made it red&black (using parts from one red and one black DS4).
My xbone controller got good sticks, its been used more then twice as much then my DS4. (Use it exclusively on PC)
Only thing worn is the tiny "ripples" on the sides, but i just turned the sticks 180 and it all good. You can hardly tell by looking at it that they are used.

+JackmoveJohnny It's not taking apart a car it's a fucking controller. It's designed to be taken apart easily. While this controller is harder to take apart then the Xbox One controller. It is still possible to do if you're over the age of 12

The PS4 controller is so trash its not even funny. You can tell how bad Sony is struggling financially by simply observing the cut in quality in all of their products.
the ps4 controller is wonderful quality what drugs are you on? its leages better than the ps3 mote and it looks so much sexier and plays games great. my only gripe is the battery life and that the rubber wears of but thats it. everything else is perfect. its the best gamepad ever made in many peoples eyes and in my eyes too. and im a pc gamer so i use it all the time. hell i dont even own a ps4 anymore. plan on getting it again though.
+Hank Hill hell no. I have a ps4, not an Xbox, and I can admit that the Xbox one controller is the perfect controller. It's actually anatomically correct whereas if you are taller and have normal - large hands its just worlds better than the ds4 which has actually given me a bone bruise on my left hand!
I still use the controllers from my ps4 bought at launch. Other than the left trigger that sometimes squeaked a bit when being pressed in the beginning I have absolutely zero issues so far. It's really weird to me that so many people seem to have problems with their controllers...

I just use Grip-iT Stick Covers on my controllers, never had an issue.
If could put 360 triggers on the Ds4, yeah that would be great.
I've done this some time ago in 2 gamepads. top tip: before screwing everything back, check if your touchpad works. the ribbon cable is rather loosely connected and likes to disconnect and then you have to disassamble the touchpad (which is glued, but that's quite easy) and connect it again
I had to replace controller twice due to tear and stick not working properly. They should remake DS4 and get rid of the ugly disco lights so we can have near PS3 quality battery life. Battery life on DS4 at the moment is the worst ever in existence of any console pads ever.

I don't think the battery you guys bought was actually 2000mah, a lot of battery sellers are Chinese scammers (or local scammers who bought from Chinese scammers) try buying a regular Li ion battery with the same voltages and amperage and just snip the wires off of the old batteries and solder the new batteries in place.

Nobody should ever buy that stuff, there isn't even a name brand attached to the product most of the time, just "made in singapore"

I've done this a few times. The ps4 Controller parts are mostly crap. Luckily it's very easy to change an repair parts of it. Had a broken R2 trigger too and bought a bunch of R2/L2 triggers for just 1$.
They are equally as easy to change and do the same job as the originals.

My launch DualShock 4 sticks were really grippy and sticky. I think they changed it after the wear controversy because the new ones are way more slippery. They feel more durable, but way less grippy.

At 2:56, you actually have to lift out the battery cradle to get access to that ribbon cable safely. You can now then easily release the ribbon cable by flipping the connector lock that keeps it in place. It's the only step he got wrong in the video.
Damn, you were shaky in this video! I get it though, controllers aren't cheap. I actually replaced my Dualshock 3 analogs for Xbox One analogs and the difference is amazing.

The replacement battery was most likely a knockoff of the official battery with the label changed. Chinese companies are known to do this. There is also the risk of the other battery setting on fire.

I'm all around disappointed with the DS4, bad shoulder buttons, nubs aren't great, bad battery life, and the touch pad is annoying. Wish I could just use DS3s.

+GameHEADtime This has been fixed for a long time already. It was only an issue for the launch models. I got mine replaced under warranty over a year ago and there is no tearing at all.

The other week after around the 5th time taking controller apart the wires connecting rumble ripped out, because the solder is very weak. Lol
You can fix it by stripping a bit of the plastic off the wires and taping the ends back on to the circuit board with electrical tape. That's how I got mine working again.

The rubber was shit at first but they replaced it and the ones now are fine. Got one with the new rubber and it's showing no sign of wear after 2 years of use.

I've taken apart my DS4 and if you can sit in a small area with highly visible ground. Those springs do fly out and they are hard to find in large areas.
This happened twice to me with a multi-colour spotted carpet. Had turn my head side to side to get the light from the ceiling to reflect on the missing spring. Was a pain in the ass! Lol

Hello friend, in the "replacement" battery it says 3.65v - 2000mah - 3.7wh - This information is fake, as the maximum discharge wattage per hour is calculated by the maximum storage power in Mah multiplied by voltage, divided per 1000 -> 3.65 x 2000 = 7300, then 7300 / 1000 = 7.3wh - If it is really a 2000mah, it should be rated as a 7.3w battery and not as 3.7w.... Since it is 3.7w, the battery actually is 1000mah instead of 2000mah. in fact, 2000mah batteries are thicker, wider and larger than this PS4 default battery (a physical thing that can't be changed in the battery world when it comes to the lithium polimer or other current compund on the batteries). If the battery is rated as 2000mah, so it should be physically bigger than the original. If you want to take a look, these batteries are like the ones branded by PKCELL. Search for the 3.7v 2000mah batteries on aliexpress then you'll see the size of the 2000mah is so much bigger (in general, double the size of a 1000mah). I'm trying to check how much physical space is available in the battery spot inside the controller, to see which is the maximum size of a battery I can fit in. But I think a 2000mah is fine (10mm x 60mm x 40mm - model 104060).

As great as the material on the Xbox One sticks seems, I'm not really a fan of the material on them either. Sure the PS4's material rips but unfortunately, because the Xbox One's material is ribbed, the friction of it rubbing against my thumb is unpleasant and has the outer layer of skin on my thumb to start pealing after playing games with it after long periods. Now, if you can do this with Wii U pro controller sticks, I'm all game. I love the material on them. It doesn't rip, it doesn't cause irritation and damage to my thumb, and best of all, just like the other 2 controllers analog material, my thumbs don't slip off of them while gaming.
I modded my original Xbox controller with PS2 analog sticks, it turned out well even though I had to brute force the sticks through the holes of the chassis but it is very comfortable to play, I played SpongeBob SquarePants Movie Game and Mercenaries with my new mod and they both played beautifully

You should do a video about the little problem Sony don't want you to know about "pressing L2 goes up" issue with the V2 Dual Shock 4 controllers. This is a very common issue and Sony doesn't even admit it publically. People have to repair their controllers themselves if the warranty has ended and it most likely is when the controller develop this issue.

No, from what I've heard, the sticks will eventually encounter too much wear on L3 and R3. If you played Black Ops 2, it will put you to that kind of sprint mode that's in the multiplayer. I personally can't vouch for this, I don't own a PS4, I own a Xbox One with the elite controller.
the simple fact you have to do this says it all!
a few tips:
- don't disconect the touch pad ribbon cable from the touch pad, its almost imposible to re connect
- don't think "ah ill just leave the LED cable disconected to save power", NO because that cable also carries the USB charging

The battery was probably a lie: they can print whatever they want on the sticker, but if battery life was the same, chances are they just took a 1000mAh battery and said "lol this is 2000mAh buy one" to scam people.
Man I have fixed around 5 PS4 controllers for friends and family R2 button broken... You opened this with way to much force and that stick thing just isn't needed.

I wouldn't do that, you won't be able to replace it if it breaks, however you can turn the lightbar off in the options
Will say, I don't know why one would do THIS, when moving to ALUMINUM thumb sticks is a valid, and cheap, option. My secondhand steam controller had already been custom fitted with one, and after that epiphany, I quickly purchased a batch so I could do the same to all of my 360 pads.:D
The rubber on my sticks looks pretty much untouched after 2 years. Not sure what people are doing to wear it down. My complaint lies with the rickety-ness my triggers are developing. Can't really complain about the battery, since it's stock rechargeable. Overall, prefer the DS4 over my XB1 controller, but the XB1s build quality is better.

An even simpler method i went with was buying a CRONUSMAX PLUS i use my xbox one controller on my ps4. the best 60 bucks i paid. course i do have a pc, xboxone and ps4 and ps3. people who ony use a ps4 users might as well just do what the video here shows you and try to be happy.
Xbox one sticks are HORRIBLE! I switched the left one with a ps3 thumbstick on my xbox controller.
Switched my PS4 sticks to Xbox One sticks soon after I bought the console, never looked back.
I would advise testing the controller before you close it back up as it is very easy to disconnect the ribbon cable from the Touchpad internally. If this does happen carefully pry it apart with a small flat screwdriver and reconnect the ribbon cable. Glue should be strong enough to stick it back together.

as a pc gamer i can certainly agree to this the xbone may be the shittiest console but the controller is fucking awesome whereas the ps4's are horrible that fucking rubber wears out in like a month.
I did this 2 years ago. the ds4 is a good controller but the XB1 sticks are SO much better. don't buy the metal ones, they make your thumbs sore after while, the cheep ones are just fine, buy a few sets, cause even they will still wear out eventually, and your friends might like them
Why would you do this? Just buy rubber covers for like $2 lol.. My favorite ones are the gel tab ones.

Now that you guys have a video about opening the ds4, can you make a good step-by-step guide on how to clean the ps4 from dust? Or maybe even go a step further and do a video on how to change thermal paste or heatsinks. With an before and after comparison on normal and demanding games. This would be great!
