In my opinion, Sibelius's greatest symphony and one of the greatest of all symphonies. A performance that does more than do it justice!

Thank you all, LSO's players and Sir Simon Rattle for coming to JAPAN !!
I listened the this piece last night in Tokyo, such a wonderful time. I will never forget that moment. Thank you again and again.

Fantastic… always loved this symphony! Peter Moore does some outstanding solos, hovering just above the orchestra and not exaggerating.
    Bravo!

Un curieux objet musical qui naît du silence et retourne au silence après avoir illustré ce qui se cache derrière le silence de la nature et des sphères...cette symphonie semble nous dire "j'aurais pu ne jamais exister". Mais elle existe et c'est merveilleux! Merci Jean Sibelius ❤

Love this symphony. Then again I consider Sibelius to be my favourite composer, no other has quite the same effect on me.

i still hear this as more of a tone poem than a symphony - even Sibelius hesitated to call it a symphony - it's a shame he did not write at least a few more symphonies - i can't help feeling he might have if not for the anti-romantic direction being taken in classical music by the 1920's - however, i respect Sibelius immensely for resisting the temptation to change who he was as a composer - he must have decided he was not going to change his style of expression in order to please music critics - so better to write nothing new at all - of course some composers do not mind being chameleons (Stravinsky, Copland, etc) but clearly Jean S. was always loyal and true to his own organic voice

The only thing, and it's the only thing, I would have liked more of is the final B in the violins before the resolution. It's the key to the entire work and could have been emphasised even more. Yes!!! It is, after all, Sibelius' final statement.

It's true what i heard...Rattle conducts it like an overture. The opening is brisk and serenity is not what he is aiming for.

This is one of the great Symphonies of Sibelius and I always feel that Sir Simon does it so well. The LSO are on superb form in this extremely moving performance. Are there any plans for a recorded cycle of Sibelius's Symphonies with Rattle and the LSO before he moves on? I hope so.

Fantastic conductor here. This is a hard piece to understand but, under Rattle, all becomes perfectly clear -even that extraordinary coda.I agree about the trombone soloist. Rattle has given him permission to go all out and Sibelius really understood what a trombone is capable of. Occasional problems with the faster passages though: coordinating woodwind and strings in the staccato semiquaver passages and and they are not helped one jot by an almost unbearably dry acoustic. The Barbican? It sounds like someone´s carpeted front room!

Wear a mask and demonstrate your brainlessness
Orchestra musicians are followers on a large scale - even if they are able to create great things at someone else's expense

Take away those filthy muzzels already… The sight is terrible and currently it makes no sense. Apart from that, LSO sounds amazing, like allways.

Perhaps you should leave that decision to the orchestra? It is a self-governing organisation, so no-one is imposing it on them. For an orchestra who rely on international touring as much as the LSO do, it is vital that their musicians remain healthy; having members bedridden with Covid for a few days would have both logistical and financial ramifications. I think the LSO have conducted themselves (no pun intended) in an exemplary fashion throughout the pandemic both with regards to looking after their members and serving their audience. Hats off to them!!!
